  • Patent number: 4982352
Abstract: In a floating point ALU, a carry-lookahead adder circuit includes integral XOR logic means for complementing the sum bits responsive to an invert signal for generating the absolute value of the difference between two binary operands without added gate delay.

  • Patent number: 4981476
Abstract: A compact, autoclavable needle safety device includes an adjustable cavity having an open position sized to receive a needle protective cap and a closed position to grip the cap within the cavity. The cavity is biased toward one of the positions and adjustable to the other position by single-handed actuation of a handle. In the closed position, the cap is gripped in place while allowing withdrawal of a syringe including a needle for use. The device maintains the cap open-end-up on an underlying surface for reinserting the needle to avoid exposing the user's hand to needle stick injury.

  • Patent number: 4971027
Abstract: A portable camp stove has an upper chamber for holding a liquid to be heated and an integral lower chamber disposed below the upper chamber. An elongated chimney with corrugated sidewall extends from the lower chamber up through the upper chamber so that, in use, the liquid in the upper chamber surrounds the chimney. A solid fuel material is combusted within the lower chamber to warm surrounding air which flows upwardly through the chimney. Heat transfer through the corrugated chimney sidewall warms the liquid. The camp stove is compact and portable, obviating the need to carry bulky stoves, fuel bottles and pot or tea kettle.

  • Patent number: 4972362
Abstract: In a high-speed binary multiplier circuit, the multiplicand is segmented into a series of 8-bit slices and the multiplier is modified-Booth recoded into 3-bit groups. The corresponding partial product terms are reduced in a regular array of small carry-save adder cells. Iterative use of the CSA array provides the Wallace tree function in one-seventh the chip area or number of adders of a conventional implementation. The multiplier is pipelined internally, driven by a fast, two-phase internal clock that is transparent to the user. The internal clock stops and restarts upon loading new operand and instruction data to synchronize the internal clock to the system clock. Other aspects of the invention include high-speed absolute value subtract circuitry for exponent calculations and normalizing floating point results.

  • Patent number: 4969474
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling urinary incontinence in a patient includes positioning a reservoir containing fluid subcutaneously over the patient's anterior pubis; an inflatable compression balloon between the patient's posterior pubic symphysis and urethra; and a conduit extending over the pubis for fluid communication between a reservoir and a compression balloon. The compression balloon is inflated in response to fluid flow from the reservoir, when manually compressed by the patient. A manually releasable, one-way valve positioned in the conduit between the reservoir and a compression balloon retains fluid in the compression balloon under pressure and is externally actuable by the patient for equilibrating pressure in the reservoir and compression balloons to permit voiding. The bladder of the patient is elevated and connected anteriorly to the patient's abdominal wall by a felt matrix or mesh patch affixed to the bladder to effectively lengthen and stabilize the urethra.

  • Patent number: 4961159
Abstract: A cellular automaton which generates pseudorandom data comprises a series of cells arranged such that each cell receives signals from electrically adjacent first and second cells. Each cell comprises a D-type flip-flop for storing a data bit, and logic circuitry which couples the flip-flop of the cell to those of associated first and second adjacent cells. The logic circuitry responds to the current state of the data bits stored by a particular cell and its associated first and second electrically adjacent cells by changing the value of the data bit stored by the particular cell according to a predetermined one of the following relationships:a(t+1)=a .sub.first (t) XOR a.sub.second (t), ora(t+1)=a .sub.first (t) XOR a(t) XOR a.sub.second (t)where, a(t) represents the current state of the data bit stored by the particular cell, a(t+1) represents the next state of the data bit stored by the particular cell, a.sub.

  • Patent number: 4955781
Abstract: A variable rate boat loading method includes using a frame having transverse front, rear-powered and rear-pivot rollers. Two pulleys are mounted on the boat gunwales between the boat's bow and center of gravity. Two winch lines are connected at one end to the powered roller in laterally spaced position. Each line extends forward atop the vehicle, upward around the front roller, and back over the frame and lengthwise of the boat to the pulleys. The lines extend through the pulleys, forward to the frame, over the pivot roller to be supported thereby, and down to the stern of the boat. The lines are supportingly connected to the stern of the boat. This arrangement provides a doubled mechanical advantage in lifting the boat from the ground up to the level of the frame. From this level, as the effective load being lifted decreases, the mechanical advantage decreases while the lifting speed increases. The winch lines automatically bind the boat to the front roller and pivot roller when the boat is fully loaded.
