  • Patent number: 8288641
Abstract: The apparatus involves a hand-held housing with a memory for storing coded audio event data, a mechanism for downloading into the memory coded audio event data and digital-audio electronics for retrieving coded audio event data from memory, converting it to an audio signal and playing it out. In one disclosed embodiment of the invention, the data are stored in accordance with a musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) standard, and may be created on an appropriately equipped personal computer (PC). The capacity of such a hand-held device is far greater than if the data were conventionally digitized or coded. A wirelessly networked system of such music devices in physical proximity is disclosed that enables audio score synthesis and mixing by at least one such device of a synthesized score and an inputted score for outplay to others in a real-time musical jam or music-sharing session.

  • Patent number: 8282097
Abstract: A transport system for cut sheet media has a first and second cylinder to form a nip, a support subsystem to transport edges of cut sheets having at least one image into and out of the nip, and an array of contact points on each cylinder to make contact with the cut sheets without marking the image. A wheel for a print medium transport system has an outer rim having a series of contact points, an inner hub supporting a means to accommodate a drive shaft, and an internal spring connecting the outer rim to the inner hub. A method of transporting cut sheets in a printing system forms a nip between at least one pair of cylinders, each cylinder having an array of contact points, guides a first edge of a cut sheet into the nip, and uses the arrays of contact points to transport the cut sheets through one of either a fusing or drying process.

  • Patent number: 8282193
Abstract: A method of printing executes a software instruction using a print system controller to measure a vertical position of each row of an array of jets, having at least one offset subset of the array offset in a movement direction, adjusts timing of firing intervals for the offset subset such that the offset subset fire after a longer interval than other jets, and fires jets other than the offset subset at a predetermined firing interval. A print head has an array of transducers, an ink chamber to store ink arranged adjacent the array of transducers, and an array of jets arranged adjacent the ink chamber such that when selected ones of the array of transducers are activated, ink from the chamber exits a jet corresponding to the selected ones of the transducers, the array of jets having at least one subset of the array offset in a vertical direction relative to the other jets.

  • Patent number: 8283655
Abstract: In layered structures, channel regions and light-interactive regions can include the same semiconductive polymer material, such as with an organic polymer. A light-interactive region can be in charge-flow contact with a contacting electrode region, and a channel region can, when conductive, provide an electrical connection between the contacting electrode region and other circuitry. For example, free charge carriers can be generated in the light-interactive region, resulting in a capacitively stored signal level; the signal level can be read out to other circuitry by turning on a transistor that includes the channel region. In an array of photosensing cells with organic thin film transistors, an opaque insulating material can be patterned to cover a data line and channel regions of cells along the line, but not extend entirely over the cells' light-interactive regions.

  • Patent number: 8274164
Abstract: A high power surface mount package including a thick bond line of solder interposed between the die and a heatsink, and between the die and a lead frame, wherein the lead frame has the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the heatsink. In one preferred embodiment, the heatsink and the lead frame are comprised of the same material. The package can be assembled using standard automated equipment, and does not require a weight or clip to force the parts close together, which force typically reduces the solder bond line thickness. Advantageously, the thermal stresses on each side of the die are effectively balanced, allowing for a large surface area die to be packaged with conventional and less expensive materials. One type of die that benefits from the present invention can include a transient voltage suppressor, but could include other dies generating a significant amount of heat, such as those in excess of 0.200 inches square.

  • Patent number: 8272178
Abstract: Described are a new type of storm windows, along with an easy way (and less expensive) of installing the press-fit storm window, on existing frames or windows, without the hassle and expense of replacing the whole window (to save time, cost, and inconvenience), to increase R-value (insulation efficiency) for the windows (i.e. reduce energy waste). This relates to the construction and installation and use of easily installed low cost interior or exterior storm windows, which are attractive and effective in reducing heat and noise transmission. Different approaches and variations to implement this are shown here.

  • Patent number: 8271785
Abstract: Users provide their standard username and password and are authenticated to the system. The system then determines from an object set, such as a container hierarchy, whether the user should have special administrative privileges for any of the resources on the machine to which they are logging in. These administrative privileges can be determined from configurable sets of pre-existing relationships between the user and resources on the system, stored within the object set. If the user is an administrator, then the system sets the UID number for that user to the UID number for administrator users. The system can even be configured to set the administrative UID to be the UID for the super-user “root” (typically, zero). If the user has no administrative privileges, the system sets the UID number for that user to the user's standard UID number.

  • Patent number: 8268136
Abstract: Axially fed fluid is sheared during long residence time in a radial workspace between counter-rotating coaxial disk-shaped centrifugal impellers. Gases evolve in the fractal turbulence of a shear layer, which is forced between laminar boundary layers, and an axial suction pump axially extracts evolved noncondensables and volatiles through cores of radial vortices in the shear layer. Cavitation due to shear between the impellers kills pathogens by shock waves, microjets, OH radicals, and nearby UV light pulses. Oppositely charged electrodes bounding the workspace cause electroporesis and electrohydraulic cavitation. The electrodes are counter-rotating ridged armatures of disk dynamos, forming a dynamic capacitor having audio frequency pulsed electric fields. Electrode erosion by arcing is prevented by shear between the electrodes.

  • Patent number: 8266676
Abstract: A client platform can be verified prior to being granted access to a resource or service on a network by validating individual hardware and software components of the client platform. Digests are generated for the components of the client platform. The digests can be collected into an integrity report. An authenticator entity receives the integrity report and compares the digests with digests stored in either a local signature database, a global signature database in an integrity authority, or both. Alternatively, the digests can be collected and stored on a portable digest-collector dongle. Once digests are either validated or invalidated, an overall integrity/trust score can be generated. She overall integrity/trust score can be used to determine whether the client platform should be granted access to the resource on the network using a policy.
