Patent number: 6223254Abstract: The present invention utilizes a cache which stores various decoded instructions, or parcels, so that these parcels can be made available to the execution units without having to decode a microprocessor instruction, such as a CISC instruction, or the like. This increases performance by bypassing the fetch/decode pipeline stages on the front end of the microprocessor by using a parcel cache to store previously decoded instructions. The parcel cache is coupled to the microprocessor fetch/decode unit and can be searched during an instruction fetch cycle. This search of the parcel cache will occur in parallel with the search of the microprocessor instruction cache. When parcel(s) corresponding to the complex instruction being fetched are found in the parcel cache a hit occurs and the corresponding micro-ops are then sent to the execution units, bypassing the previous pipeline stages.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1998Date of Patent: April 24, 2001Assignee: STMicroelectronics, Inc.Inventor: Naresh Soni

Patent number: 6122291Abstract: A communication system (28), comprises a master device (44) and slave device (30). Consequential to negotiations within the system (28) and having regard to system capacity and a relative hierarchy that exists between on-going communications, a bandwidth used for an on-going communication between the master device (44) and the slave device (30) is modified in proportion to a substantially instantaneous data rate requirement of the communication. As such, the system allows fluctuations in the amount of information, transmitted in a fixed time through an optimization of an available and dynamically varying bandwidth, while biasing the communication resource in relation to the relative hierarchy.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1997Date of Patent: September 19, 2000Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: William Neil Robinson, Paul Crichton, Howard Peter Benn, David Chambers

Method and apparatus for increasing the linearity of the phase and gain of a power amplifier circuit
Patent number: 6107880Abstract: The present invention provides for a method and apparatus for increasing the linearity of the phase and gain of an amplifier circuit (10, 22). The amplifier circuit (10, 22) maintains linearity of the amplified output signal by monitoring the power levels of the input signal, and adjusting the supply voltage level(s) of the amplifier (18), based upon the measured input power levels. By appropriately adjusting the supply voltage level(s) of the amplifier (18) an output signal having a consistent gain and phase can be realized. Preferably a delay circuit (26) will be used to delay receipt of the input signal by the amplifier (18), so as to synchronize receipt of the input signal with the corresponding source voltage adjustments. The value of the delay preferably corresponds to the time for the envelope detector (14) to measure the instantaneous input power levels and the time for the processing unit (16) to determine and apply the appropriate supply voltage level(s) to the amplifier (18).Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1998Date of Patent: August 22, 2000Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventor: Michael Joseph Shaw -

Patent number: 6104927Abstract: A method and system are disclosed where both a mobile station (105) and the infrastructure logically treat all access probes of an access attempt as if they were transmitted to a first base station (101). This is accomplished by having the mobile station (105) store both the registration parameters received from the first base station (101) to which an access probe is transmitted and a characteristic, such as the PN offset, of the first base station (101). When the mobile station (105) determines that it should perform an access probe handoff, it transmits an access probe to a different base station, identifying in the probe the characteristic, such as the PN offset, of the first base station (101). This allows the infrastructure to identify the base station that the mobile station (105) intends to register with. When the mobile station (105) receives acknowledgment to the access attempt, it then updates its registration variables with respect to the parameters received from the first base station (101).Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1998Date of Patent: August 15, 2000Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventor: William Daniel Willey

Patent number: 6101175Abstract: In a communication system (100) where a remote unit is given a time offset for a base station (102) and hands off to the base station (102) if the remote unit (113) can acquire the base station within a time window surrounding the time offset, a remote unit (113) utilizes the time offset of each base station (supplied by a serving base station (101) via a downlink communication signal (116) and searches for neighboring base stations within the time window surrounding its PN offset. The time window surrounding an individual base station's PN offset is allowed to vary depending upon whether the communication system (100) is time synchronized. In particular, a base station (101) supplies the remote unit (113) with an indication that the communication system (100) is operating in a synchronized or an unsynchronized mode, and the remote unit (113) varies the time window (search window) accordingly.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1997Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Eric R. Schorman, Michael D. Kotzin

Patent number: 6097953Abstract: The present invention provides a method for determining whether to handoff in a wireless communication system (100). The system (100) collects first environmental variables related to a first mobile station (105) within the wireless communication system (100). The system (100) determines when a communication between a base station (101) and the first mobile station (105) is improperly terminated. The system (100) analyzes, when the communication is improperly terminated, the first environmental variables to generate environmental conditions rules. The system (100) then applies the environmental conditions rules to a second mobile station (106) which subsequently communicates with the base station (101) and which has second environment variables substantially similar to the first environmental variables.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1998Date of Patent: August 1, 2000Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey D.
