  • Patent number: 5748106
Abstract: A battery powered transponder in a vehicle for communicating with a toll station or weigh station lights one of a few LEDs to indicate whether a bypass of the station is authorized or denied. A transmit/receive circuit sends data to an IC which signals the instruction to a microprocessor which is programmed to activate the proper LED when so instructed for a short period and then maintains a recall state for a long period. A pushbutton switch connected to the microprocessor, if operated within the long period, triggers a replay of the proper LED to verify the instruction while minimizing power consumption.

  • Patent number: 5742142
Abstract: An FET switch and an inductor in series with a DC motor supply voltage pulses at a high frequency, a power diode permits current recirculation, and a capacitor connected to the motor maintains a mean DC voltage level on the motor which is proportional to the switching duty cycle. The motor speed is proportional to the mean voltage. Smoothing due to the capacitor and the inductor converts the voltage pulses due to switching to a small sinusoidal ripple to attain low radiated emissions.

  • Patent number: 5732375
Abstract: An array of pressure sensors on a vehicle passenger seat senses the presence of an occupant including an infant seat and determines whether the infant seat faces forward or rearward. A microprocessor coupled to the sensors determines whether to allow or inhibit deployment based on the sensor load forces and the pattern of loading. The pattern can identify an infant seat and pattern and loading determine its orientation. Local areas are checked to detect child occupants. Fuzzy logic is used to determine loading and to recognize patterns.

  • Patent number: 5721374
Abstract: Relative speeds of wheels are measured in different speed ranges when tires are properly inflated to learn offsets due to parameters not related to pressure. The offsets are used during leak monitoring to detect a wheel speed pattern which is abnormal due to pressure drops. During learning periods, monitoring for large pressure drops only is permitted using preliminary offset values. When learning is complete in a given speed range high sensitivity monitoring is invoked. Special sensitivity of large pressure drops shortly after vehicle start up allows a brief period of flat detection. A plurality of leak events for a given wheel are accumulated to signal a warning, with large pressure drops accumulating faster than small drops for progressive sensitivity and greater robustness.

  • Patent number: 5719483
Abstract: Inductive charging systems comprising improved charging wands that are coupled between a source of power and a charging port that is coupled to a battery of an electric vehicle. The improvement provided by the present invention is that the charging wand has its magnetic core molded into its body. In one embodiment, a magnetic core is directly molded into the body of the charging wand. In another embodiment, the magnetic core is molded into a plastic ring that surrounds the core which in turn is secured into the body of the charging wand. The present invention improves the assembly process for charging wands by eliminating the wide tolerance range associated with core fabrication. Molding magnetic cores into the inductive charge wand eliminates the requirement for machining the side walls of the cores.

  • Patent number: 5714856
Abstract: A system and methods that provide for battery regeneration in electric vehicles without employing brake blending. Wheel speed sensors provide speed inputs to a controller, for example, that are processed to control the torque commands issued to a motor of the vehicle, which allows a higher level of battery regeneration without causing drive wheels to lock up. In the present invention, speed inputs derived from the wheel speed sensors are sampled. The absolute value of the difference between the input signals derived from the wheel speed sensors is compared to a predetermined difference threshold. If the absolute value of the difference between the input signals is less than the predetermined difference threshold, a regeneration torque command is generated to control the torque output of the motor that is equal to a current value of the regeneration torque command.

  • Patent number: 5711558
Abstract: A locking mechanism for locking a first member that is inserted into a second member into a first member, such as to secure an inductive coupler in a charge port while it is used to charge an electric vehicle. The locking mechanism prevents premature or malicious removal of the coupler before charging has been completed. The locking mechanism has logic that allows a user to set the lock in the charge port prior to insertion of the coupler. The locking mechanism has an actuator coupled to a rotatable link that is rotated thereby. A first pin is coupled to the rotatable link and a hole disposed in the first member that mates with the first pin to lock the inductive coupler in the charge port. A spring loaded release mechanism coupled to the first pin that permits the first pin to slide into the hole. Motion of the cable and the release mechanism releases and locks the first pin in the hole, or retracts the first pin from the hole, thus locking and unlocking the locking mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5705948
Abstract: A boost circuit effects increasing current flow through an inductor and a switch when the switch is closed, and then, when the switch is open, directs the inductor current through a diode to charge a storage capacitor at the output. A logic circuit operates the switch. The switch is controlled on by sensing low current flow in the capacitor and off by sensing high current flow in the switch, so that inductor current is continuous.

  • Patent number: 5703583
Abstract: Each signal channel has a 12 bit A/D converter which begins conversion after each read cycle. A 24 bit digital signal processor is connected by a 24 bit data bus to the converters such that one converter supplies data to the upper data lines and the other supplies data to the lower data lines of the bus. Both converters are simultaneously read into the processor, the data being combined into one word. The processor then splits the word into separate data for each channel by multiply and move operations.

  • Patent number: 5703754
Abstract: A die cast housing having an open side receives a circuit which seats on a housing ledge near the open side. An accelerometer and other components carried by the board are enclosed by the housing and board. The outer side of the circuit board is covered with an adhesive sealant compound which secures and seals the circuit board to the housing without fasteners for efficient structural transmissibility, and also structurally dampens the circuit board. A sheet metal cover over the open side inhibits electromagnetic interference. Lateral ports on the housing are aligned with connectors on the circuit board and permit coupling to the circuit board by mating connectors which seal the ports. The connectors have an interference fit with webs on the housing to permit thrust testing before the adhesive sealant is cured.

  • Patent number: 5701038
Abstract: The firing loop of a SIR system has a firing element, a capacitor for passing AC pulses to the element and an inductance which varies according to application. A current sensor monitors each pulse and detects a threshold crossing on the trailing side of the pulse, and a toggle circuit operates a switch arrangement to terminate the pulse and initiate the next pulse of opposite polarity. This current feedback circuit varies the pulse frequency according to the loop inductance but the RMS loop current is independent of inductance.
