  • Patent number: 8323178
Abstract: The present invention includes methods and apparatus for depositing materials in the reproductive tract of an animal, such as antibiotics or semen for artificial insemination, using an improved device that covers the end of a sheath inserted into the reproductive tract. A thin protective membrane is provided at the tip of the sheath having a tiny pre-ruptured prick opening therein that is designed to rupture under increased pressure from the fluid inside the sheath. The protective cover can be an integrated portion of the sheath itself, or a material applied to the tip of the sheath. The protective cover is minimal in size as to not increase the diameter of the sheath so that there is no loss in tactile sensitivity to a physician or breeder who must maneuver the invention through the reproductive tract of the animal.

  • Patent number: 8235105
Abstract: Methods for connecting drill pipe sections together using a support unit comprising an opening, a wall extending around the opening, a plurality of movable slips deployed in the opening, and a plurality of lever assemblies, each lever assembly pivotally attached to the wall and having a proximal end operably associated with at least one of the slips. A first pipe section is rotated against a second pipe section. Upward and downward movement of distal ends of said levers cause the slips to move between extended and refracted positions. In some embodiments, the second pipe section is held stationary while the extended slips, and thus the first pipe section, rotates.

  • Patent number: 8162174
Abstract: This is an improved retrieval mechanism for vending machines that includes a sophisticated positioning system, gripper and trays for improved efficiency in product retrieval and delivery. Following product selection, the positioning system quickly transports the gripper through the X-Y plane to the front of a tray queue containing the selected product. The gripper is extended in the Z-direction, and its fingers grasp the foremost product container in the queue. The gripper is raised in order to clear a retaining lip in the queue and then retracts, and the positioning system transports the gripper carrying the product container to a delivery port. The gripper then releases the product which slides down a chute into a delivery port for customer pick up. Unique product storage trays are provided which work in conjunction with the gripper to allow only the foremost product to be removed from a tray queue. Related methods are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8131008
Abstract: Methods, apparatuses, and systems for image-based measurement and inspection of pre-engineered structural components, such as building trusses and wall panels. A system can include: a light source; a camera; a first memory storage; a second memory storage; and a processing unit configured to (i) detect a characteristic of the structural component, (ii) compare the characteristic to a corresponding characteristic of at least one reference data, and (iii) indicate a result of the comparison. A method can include: causing a light source to illuminate a portion of the structural component, receiving a reflection of the light source from the illuminated portion of the structural component, and storing data corresponding to the intensity of the reflection; comparing the stored data to at least one reference data; and indicating a result of the comparison.

  • Patent number: 8127866
Abstract: The present invention is an air injection collar for use in the drilling industry that is used to reduce the weight of the column of returning drilling mud and debris without causing unnecessary frictional wear on the drill pipe. The invention is a unique sleeve that is coupled to a drill casing that includes an input port for receiving the pressurized air or other fluid from the surface, an annular plenum extending around the drill casing, and a series of openings in the plenum leading to the inside of the drill casing. These openings disperse the pressurized air or other fluid into the upflowing mud around the central drill pipe so that it is not concentrated in one place, especially the center of the casing, where it could cause frictional damage to the drill pipe.

  • Patent number: 8070171
Abstract: The present invention includes methods and apparatus for easily adjusting a shock and strut assembly to modify the ride height of a vehicle by providing one or more spacers to be placed between the lower spring seat mount and the spring seat plate that rests upon it in order to raise the ride height of a vehicle. Embodiments include a unique location for a lower spring seat mount. The position of the lower spring seat mount may be lowered to reduce the ride height of the vehicle, and one or more spacers may be inserted above the lower spring seat mount to raise the ride height of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 8036891
Abstract: Methods of using individually distinctive patterns of voice characteristics to identify a speaker include computing the reassigned spectrogram of each of at least two voice samples, pruning each reassigned spectrogram to remove noise and other computational artifacts, and comparing (either visually or with the aid of a processor) the strongest points to determine whether the voice samples belong to the same speaker.

  • Patent number: 7962244
Abstract: A number of water related issues concern most communities. Among these are the availability of water, and the ability of the existing infrastructure to efficiently pump and deliver that water without wasting energy. The present invention addresses these issues with respect to landscape water use. A preferred embodiment of the present invention is an add-on module that may be programmed with local watering restrictions including time of use (TOU), and that is connected to the output of any existing landscape irrigation controller. The module is programmed to not allow watering during certain times of day or certain days of the week as established by a local water authority or municipality. Embodiments of the invention also provide methods and apparatus for updating the local watering restrictions, and integrating the present invention into existing controllers.
