  • Patent number: 6357431
Abstract: A method of determining a goal voltage for a fuel/air sensor of an engine electronic fuel injection system includes the steps of determining a goal fuel/air sensor voltage, superimposing a wave form forcing function to the fuel/air sensor voltage for providing a goal fuel/air sensor voltage having a wave form pattern and controlling the engine to operate according to the goal fuel/air sensor voltage. The wave form forcing function provides the required fuel/air perturbations that are required to retain proper oxygen storage of the catalyst to maintain high three-way conversion efficiency.

  • Patent number: 6357081
Abstract: A disjoinable hinge mechanism having a locking cam is provided. The hinge mechanism includes a hinge assembly having a hinge pin which pivotably couples a first hinge structure to a second hinge structure. The hinge mechanism also includes a cam pivotably coupled to the hinge pin and a third hinge structure which includes a cam follower. The cam is positionable between a released position and an engaged position. The cam does not engage the cam follower when positioned in the released position. The cam engages the cam follower when positioned in the engaged position. The cam is adapted to be moved into the engaged position when an associated closure member is moved into a closed position. Thereafter, the cam remains in the engaged position during normal operation of the closure member. The second hinge structure may also include a set of locator pins which engage mounting apertures in the third hinge structure.

  • Patent number: 6357228
Abstract: The present invention provides a torque converter support for an automatic transmission which uses a driving gear of a fluid pump to support the torque converter. The driving gear is supported by a journal area of the fluid pump. The torque converter impeller hub, attached to the torque converter, is engaging the driving gear and has at least one rib therearound. A hollow bore of the driven gear rides against the rib, offering structural support to the torque converter impeller hub and torque converter. The driven gear also has a hub. The hub has an outer surface which rides against the journal area and provides the base support for the system.

  • Patent number: 6345837
Abstract: An air bag module which includes a panel member having an integral reaction canister having a plurality of reaction walls and a manifold assembly having a manifold. The manifold includes at least one deployment door retaining channel and is operable for retaining an air bag cushion, an inflator, and a deployment door. The deployment door includes at least one retaining bead and a trim portion which are separated by a pliant spacing leg. As the reaction canister is incorporated into the panel member, the need for a separate reaction canister component is eliminated, thereby reducing cost, weight and overall size of the air bag module and allowing the manifold assembly to be used across a wider range of vehicles. The retaining bead and spacing leg flexibly couple the cover door to the manifold and allow the cover door to be repositioned during installation of the manifold assembly into the panel member so as to eliminate gaps, puckering and other defects in the appearance or the vehicle interior.

  • Patent number: 6328534
Abstract: An in-line combination steering pump with a shaft and water pump having a housing defining a pumping chamber into which the outer end of the shaft extends. The water pump housing supports an annular adapter member for supporting a seal which encompasses the shaft and is press mounted in the adapter. An impeller is removably secured to the outer end of the shaft adjacent the seal. A bushing encompasses the shaft between the seal and the impeller and is compressed by attachment of the impeller to the shaft so as press the seal firmly into the adapter. For replacement, the seal and bushing are removable over the outer end of the shaft after the impeller is removed.

  • Patent number: 6327901
Abstract: A method is provided for determining the rationality of a device for monitoring the pressure within an evaporative emission control system of an automotive vehicle. The method includes opening a valve of the evaporative emission control system and determining if a vacuum switch of the evaporative emission control system opened. If the vacuum switch opened, a code is set indicating that the vacuum switch passed an opening test. If the vacuum switch did not open, the method determines if a fail timer is greater than a first fail threshold value. The first fail threshold value corresponds to an amount of time within which a properly functioning vacuum switch should open after said valve is opened. If the fail timer is greater than the fail threshold value, the method sets a code indicating that the vacuum switch failed the opening test. If the fail timer is less than or equal to the first fail threshold value, the method increments the fail timer.

  • Patent number: 6324744
Abstract: A specialized mounting arrangement for an accessory such as an engine driven air conditioner compressor to an engine is utilized featuring a pair of press fitted bushings in a pair of arms of the mount and a single bolt extending therethrough. The arms of the mount assembly are constructed so that they straddle portions of an anchor member attached to the engine. A connector bolt is inserted through one bushing in one arm of the mount and then thorough a passage in the anchor member, and next into engagement with internal threads carried by the other bushing which his carried by the other arm of the mount. Rotation of the bolt moves the bushings toward one another and against the ends of the anchor member to clamp the anchor and thus the accessory therebetween.
