  • Patent number: 4020296
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved electroacoustic transducer of the type in which electrical conductors are mounted over a substantial portion of the radiating area of a movable diaphragm, characterized in that the electromagnetic forces exerted on the diaphragm are linear throughout the entire excursion of the diaphragm. The apparatus includes an acoustically transparent solenoid member having spaced-apart turns, the diaphragm being disposed within the area bounded by the solenoid turns, and having a conductor mounted on or comprising the diaphragm. A D.C. current is passed through the coil while the output of an audio amplifier is impressed on the conductor. The above arrangement is unique in that the flux density within the area bounded by the solenoid being essentially equal at all points, the conductor is subjected to essentially constant magnetic forces, notwithstanding its position within the solenoid.

  • Patent number: 4013397
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a combustion apparatus particularly intended for use with fuels which are solid at normal ambient temperatures but are readily meltable at temperatures somewhat exceeding ambient, the fuels being combustible in their molten state. An example of a preferred form of fuel is paraffin. The apparatus preferably includes a two part plate assembly adapted to float upon molten fuel, the plate assembly being centrally apertured and provided with a wick extending through the aperture, the heat developed by combustion by the wick being transmitted through the conductive plate assembly to heat and thereby melt a supply of fuel directly below the assembly.

  • Patent number: 4009658
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a novel metering roll for inks or the like and to the method of making the same. In accordance with the invention, a cylindrical metallic roller core is provided with a multiplicity of shaped indentations or receiver cells in its periphery, in concentration of from about 35 to 90 cells per lineal inch in each direction, the cells being preferably generally in the form of inverted pyramids of a selected volumetric capacity, the receiver cells being preferably closely spaced and separated by land areas of minimal size of the order of 30 microns or less.

  • Patent number: 3995704
Abstract: The present invention relates to a game apparatus, and more particularly to a game apparatus of the board type, incorporating twenty five landing areas, arranged five by five. The landing areas are divided into two territories of ten landing areas each and a central neutral zone, the landing areas in the territories being assigned numerical values. Two sets of markers are provided having numerical values corresponding to the values of the landing areas in the territories. In accordance with an embodiment, the game board defines a compact, foldable container or carrier which protects the playing surface and within which the markers may be stowed.

  • Patent number: 3995927
Abstract: The present invention is directed to improvements in the art of drawer suspensions, and particularly to an improved front release drawer suspension of the type used for supporting a drawer within a cabinet and providing an initial stop limiting outward movement of the drawer, yet permitting the drawer to be removed from the cabinet in a forward direction by decoupling the drawer mounted and cabinet mounted suspension components. More particularly, the invention relates to a drawer slide of the type described, characterized by the inclusion of release pawls extending forwardly of the front face of the cabinet in the fully extended position of the drawer, permitting facile visual and manual access thereto, the slide mechanism being further characterized by a shallow vertical profile, permitting the use thereof on relatively shallow drawers.

  • Patent number: 3988026
Abstract: The present invention relates to a self-compensating rotary seal member such as is used in low pressure applications, i.e. where a drive shaft extends through a container wall. The seal member is characterized by an elastomeric collar member mounted on the drive shaft within a housing, the ends of the collar being in frictional driving connection with a spaced pair of thrust washers, the washers in turn being yieldingly pressed against wear plates formed of material having a low coefficient of friction. Sealing is effected in a direction axially of the shaft by the interfit of the collar about the shaft, and in the direction normal to the axis by the frictional and rotary engagement of the thrust washers against portions of the wear plate or plates surrounding the shaft and disposed at the ends of the housing.

  • Patent number: 3938980
Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for forming tempered glass articles, the particularly shaped glass articles. The method includes the step of subjecting the glass article to be tempered to a homogeneous heating source while simultaneously quenching surfaces of said article being heated, whereby there is achieved within said article a differential temperature condition sufficient to effect full tempering thereof. Since the surfaces of said article are quenched as the article is being heated, at least the surface portions of the article are retained at a temperature sufficiently low to provide mechanical support for the article, whereby sagging or deformation of the article under gravitational or other influences is prevented, without the necessity for providing form-fitting molds or like appurtenances physically to prevent distortion of the glass article during tempering. The invention further relates to an apparatus for practicing the noted method.

  • Patent number: 3934995
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for cutting discrete sheets from a band or ribbon of glass such as emerges from the final stages of a float line or other glass production system. In accordance with the invention, a selected portion of an advancing band of glass in which a cut is to be made, which band is at a temperature of about 1000.degree. F or upward, and particularly in the range of about 1100.degree. to 1250.degree. F or more, is subjected to a moderate, controlled quench influence, scribed, and rapidly broken along the scribe line.

  • Patent number: 3934803
Abstract: The present invention relates to a portable bag distending and supporting apparatus for holding a bag, such as a plastic leaf collector or trash collector, with the receiving end thereof in open position essentially perpendicular to a horizontal surface, thus to permit leaves and trash to be raked or swept into the interior of the bag. The device is characterized by a support mechanism which holds the receiving end of the bag against tilting without requiring the use of stakes or spikes embedded in the ground, the support apparatus in addition functioning at least partially to extend the bag in a lengthwise direction to facilitate filling. The device is further characterized by being constructed of inexpensive components which may be readily assembled by the user, thus reducing the bulk of the apparatus in shipping.
