  • Patent number: 8250562
Abstract: A thin-client device having an application program obtains a copy of an application update having an update barrier level via a network. The thin-client device receives a set of configuration parameters from a configuration server via the network and sets the barrier level value to a value specified by the set of configuration parameters. Alternatively, the thin-client device retrieves a default barrier level value stored in the thin-client device. If the set of configuration parameters does not specify a barrier level value, the barrier level value is set to the default barrier level value. The thin-client device compares the update barrier level to a barrier level value corresponding to a minimum application version necessary to maintain support for a critical feature. If the update barrier level is greater than or equal to the barrier level value, the thin-client device updates its application program.

  • Patent number: 8242737
Abstract: In a motor-driven vehicle using power stored in a secondary battery as a source of motive power in which part of vehicle braking is achieved by regenerative braking by generating electrical energy absorbed by charging the secondary battery, the state of charge of the secondary battery is adjusted during charging so that, when charging is completed, the state of charge of the battery will be such that it is still capable of receiving energy generated during regenerative braking. During charging, after the battery has been charged to a target charge level, and battery temperature has subsequently changed, a state where the battery is still capable of receiving energy generated during regenerative braking can be achieved by slightly discharging the battery depending on the temperature of the battery. Such slight discharge of the battery can be obtained by powering an electric heater (22) in an engine cooling water circuit or operating a generator (7) as a motor for motoring the vehicle engine (8).

  • Patent number: 8238197
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for acquiring seismic data using a wireless network and a number of individual data acquisition modules that are configured to collect seismic data and forward data to a central recording and control system. In one implementation, a number of remote modules (301) are arranged in lines. Base station modules (302) receive information from the lines and relay the information to a central control and recording system (303). Radio links operating on multiple frequencies (F1-F12) are used by the modules (301). For improved data transfer rate, radio links from a remote module (301) leap past the nearest remote module to the next module closer to the base station.

  • Patent number: 8234096
Abstract: Various embodiments herein include one or more of systems, methods, software, and/or data structures to extract models of components (e.g., vias and traces) for PCB channels from measurements (or simulations) taken from physical PCB channels. By applying stochastic optimization to measurements of two PCB channels having different channel lengths, s-matrices (e.g., two-port, four-port, and the like) of the components of a PCB channel may be accurately determined by searching the multi-dimensional parameter space for parameters that comply with the measured values. Once the models for the components have been accurately determined, they may be utilized in constructing a model library that includes component models and is based on physical measurement data.

  • Patent number: 8228327
Abstract: A method for rendering stereoscopic images with non-linear depth variation. The method includes storing content in memory that is ready for rendering, e.g., computer animated images including animated objects or models. A processor is operated to position stereo or horizontally offset cameras and to render the images based on a non-linear relationship between disparity assigned to one or more of the animated objects and a distance between the cameras and the objects. The non-linear relationship is defined by a function or algorithm callable by the processor such as a function that defines a curved depth variation for the computer animated scene. In other cases, the non-linear relationship is defined by stored table, and the rendering includes using the distance between the cameras and an object to retrieve the disparity value to assign to that object. More than one non-linear relationship may be used to render objects with differing depth variations.

  • Patent number: 8227127
Abstract: A carbon dioxide negative method of manufacturing renewable hydrogen and trapping carbon dioxide from the air or gas streams is described. Direct current renewable electricity is provided to a water electrolysis apparatus with sufficient voltage to generate hydrogen and hydroxide ions at the cathode, and protons and oxygen at the anode. These products are separated and sequestered and the base is used to trap carbon dioxide from the air or gas streams as bicarbonate or carbonate salts. These carbonate salts, hydrogen, and trapped carbon dioxide in turn can be combined in a variety of chemical and electrochemical processes to create valuable carbon-based materials made from atmospheric carbon dioxide. The net effect of all processes is the generation of renewable hydrogen from water and a reduction of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere or in gas destined to enter the atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 8223196
Abstract: A method for digitally augmenting or enhancing a food product such as the surface or top of a cake or other edible object. The method includes generating an augmentation media file based on a projection surface of the food product such as a digital movie or image that is mapped to the 3D topography of projection surface and that is projected on the food product using a properly aligned projector. Interactivity is provided by having the method include determining a modification or change of the 3D topography of the projection surface and, based upon the modification, generating a modified augmentation media file and operating the projector to use the modified augmentation media file to project a modified projected image on the food product. The method further provides interactivity by detecting a user interaction with the projection surface and generating a modified augmentation media file based on this tracked interaction.

  • Patent number: 8216475
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for separating fractions of a mixture using a chromatography device. The method includes the following steps: controlling in one node of the device, the history of a specific variable of the fractions of the mixture to be separated; detecting one characteristic point of the history, the characteristic point being between two successive steps of fraction collecting; comparing the position of the characteristic point relative to a target position; adjusting the amount of mobile phase modifying the position of the characteristic point to cause the position of the characteristic point to coincide with the target position. The invention also concerns a device for implementing the method. The method enables the operation of the device to be automatically set.

  • Patent number: 8219646
Abstract: Systems and methods for dynamic intelligent mirror selection are presented. Dynamic intelligent mirror selection may include evaluating available mirrors at a client to determine an optimum mirror from which to download a portion of data. For each portion of data downloaded, reevaluation of the available mirrors may be provided such that dynamic selection of the mirrors may reflect changes in network conditions. The mirror selection may be based at least partially on observed characteristics of mirrors observed while downloading from a mirror, such that no synthetic work load is needed to benchmark mirror performance. The observed characteristics may include transfer speed, error counts, latency, and mirror load. Furthermore, a random bonus and usage bonus may be provided to help in facilitating the evaluation of available mirrors.
