  • Patent number: 5137045
Abstract: A descending stream of molten metal is electromagnetically metered by a primary coil surrounding an upstream portion of the stream. Alternating electric current flows through the coil, and the frequency of that current is controlled to optimize the electromagnetic efficiency (magnetic pressure/power loss) of the electromagnetic metering system. • Patent number: 5136088
Abstract: A process is provided for sulfonating an organic reactant which, upon sulfonation, produces a viscous sulfonation reaction product having a viscosity substantially greater than 1,500 centipoises at a reaction temperature wherein the sulfonation reaction product is more than 85% by weight completely reacted. The process utilizes an elongated, enclosed reactor surface greater than about 15 feet in length having upstream and downstream ends and equipped with a heat exchanging surface. The process comprises cocurrently flowing a film of organic reactant and a gaseous sulfonating agent downwardly in the reactor while pressurizing the sulfonating agent cocurrently along said reactor surface while providing a pressure drop between upstream and downstream ends of the reactor to impart sufficient velocity to the gaseous sulfonating agent to thin the film of the viscous sulfonation product.

  • Patent number: 5133957
Abstract: Hypersensitive dentin or cementum is treated by applying thereto two copolymerizable monomers which are polymerized in place and function to desensitize the hypersensitive areas. The first copolymerizable monomer used in the invention is the reaction product of N-phenylglycine or N- (p-tolyl)glycine and glycidyl methacrylate (NPG-GMA or NTG-GMA). The second copolymerizable monomer is selected from certain compounds produced by the reaction of an acid anhydride with excess hydroxyethyl methacrylate, e.g., biphenyl dimethacrylate. In a preferred embodiment, the mixture of monomers also contains a photosensitizer, such as camphoroquinone, which makes the mixture photocurable in addition to self-curable.

  • Patent number: 5131225
Abstract: A system and method of separating the gaseous components of air to provide a compressed oxygen-enriched gas stream and a nitrogen-enriched gas stream are disclosed. The separation system and method generate an oxygen-enriched stream including substantially pure oxygen, such as about 99% or greater oxygen, and having a pressure of up to about 10,000 pounds per square inch, thereby eliminating the need for a separate compressor to compress the oxygen-enriched gas stream. The oxygen separation system and method are used in aircraft to supply substantially pure oxygen that facilitates in-flight operation of an aircraft emergency power unit, especially at high altitudes.

  • Patent number: 5132021
Abstract: An article of manufacture and method for holding and treating water contaminated with one or more water-soluble contaminants to substantially prevent the contaminants from seeping into ground water supplies disposed below a water hold area. The article of manufacture and method include the use of a water-holding material, e.g., a water-swellable clay, such as bentonite, for reducing the permeation of the contaminated water into the soil, and a treatment layer, disposed beneath the water-holding material, containing a material capable of adsorbing, absorbing, ion-exchanging, neutralizing or reacting with one or more water-soluble contaminants within the water for removing a substantial portion of the contaminants from the water so that the portion of the held water that permeates the water-holding layer, will be rendered substantially less contaminated.

  • Patent number: 5131666
Abstract: A packing containment assembly for sealing an operating member such as a shaft or stem in a fluid control valve, particularly where PTFE packing is used. A pair of zero clearance anti-extrusion rings of PEEK material are mounted in the shaft with the PTFE packing therebetween. Each ring has an inner diameter slightly less than the shaft outer diameter to form an interference fit. The rings are split with a scarf cut to provide an overlapping joint and enable mounting of the rings on the operating member. A male adapter PEEK ring matches a V-type female packing ring which significantly reduces the amount of PTFE packing needed for a reliable seal. A step cut PEEK zero clearance anti-extrusion ring could be used as well as a fractured carbon ring.

  • Patent number: 5131271
Abstract: An ultrasonic level detector includes a transducer for generating and receiving bursts of sonic energy at a surface to locate the position of the surface. In response to receiving a burst of energy reflected from the surface, the transducer generates an electrical signal, which is then supplied to a variable gain amplifier. After amplification, the electrical signal is supplied to a comparator and a peak detector. The comparator generates a timing signal upon the electrical signal exceeding a threshold. A window generator circuit generates a receive window that controls whether the electrical signal is supplied to the comparator and the magnitude of the threshold on the comparator. The peak detector determines the maximum amplitude of the electrical signal, which may be used to vary the amplifier gain and the number of pulses included in an excitation signal which drives the transducer. Upon receipt of the timing signal, a microprocessor determines the distance between the transducer and the detected surface.

  • Patent number: 5129625
Abstract: An improved live load packing system for sealing an operating valve member in a fluid valve. A packing follower includes a base and a guide sleeve with a non-metallic inner liner adapted for slidable engagement on the operating valve member. A series of Belleville disk springs slidably engage the guide sleeve outer diameter and maintain concentric mounting during loading of V-type TFE packing members to ensure uniform concentric spring loading and to prevent undesired side loading. A window permits viewing the position of the guide sleeve and inner liner during packing loading adjustment so that optimum loading can be attained and maintained when the viewer notes the top edge of the guide sleeve and inner liner is flush with the top surface of the packing flange.
