    Abstract: The present invention is directed to methods of inserting a variety of interbody spinal fusion implants across a disc space between adjacent vertebral bodies. One of the methods of the present invention contemplates distracting the adjacent vertebral bodies, forming a bore from the anterior or posterior aspect of the spinal column across a distracted disc space between the adjacent vertebral bodies and into the adjacent vertebral bodies, and inserting into the bore the spinal implant having opposed arcuate portions in an angular relationship to one another along the length of the implant and oriented toward the adjacent vertebral bodies.

    Abstract: A spinal fixation device for stabilizing one or more segments of the human spine and for preventing the dislodgement of intervertebral spinal fusion implants, which remains permanently fixated once applied. The spinal fixation device of the present invention comprises of a staple member made of material appropriate for human surgical implantation which is of sufficient length to span the disc space between two adjacent vertebrae and to engage, via essentially perpendicular extending projections, the vertebrae adjacent to that disc space. A portion of the staple of the spinal fixation device interdigitates with an already implanted intervertebral spinal fusion implant which itself spans the disc space to engage the adjacent vertebrae, and the spinal fixation deice is bound to the spinal fusion implant by a locking means.

    Abstract: The present invention is a specialized orthopedic implant having an exterior surface for engaging bone. The surface comprises arrayed projections having at least one forward facing facet directed at least in part toward the leading end of the implant and at least one rearward portion directed at least in part toward the opposite trailing end of the implant. Each of the forward facet and rearward portion has a length and a slope. The length of the forward facet is longer than the length of the rearward facet. The slope of the rearward facet is steeper than the slope of the forward facet. The surface projections also have opposed side facets directed generally toward the sides of the implant. The side facets are located between the forward facet and rearward facet and converge toward each other in a direction away from the base of the surface projections. The surface may also include projections having left and right forward side facets and a rearward facet.

A method for forming a core within a metal casting includes the steps of providing a precipitation-hardenable alloy core rod having a length and opposite ends; packing sand around at least one end of the core rod to form a sand core with core rod; placing the sand core with core rod into a mold; pouring molten metal into the mold and around the sand core with core rod; and producing a metal casting having a core and a uniform sidewall thickness in a range of +/?0.060 inches.

First and second articulated jaws are attached to the magazine and have first and second channel extensions therein aligned with the first and second channels of the magazine, so that a clip can be received from the magazine in the jaws with the first and second enlarged portions of the support member and the clamping arm being received in the first and second channel extensions of the jaws. The channel extensions include first and second releasing openings.

    Abstract: Doppler Velocimetry is a widely used method for estimating stroke volume (SV). The accuracy and reliability of its measurement however, is dependant on a) the correct assessment of the aortic valve cross-sectional area (CSA), and b) the maximal systolic velocity integral (SVI). The invention avoids the conventional assessment of aortic valve CSA by using a calibration method: a reference stroke volume SVREF is determined by a method different from Doppler velocimetry, e.g. by thoracic electrical bioimpedance (TEB), or thoracic electrical bioadmittance, measured via surface thorax electrodes (transthoracic approach) or via electrodes located directly on an esophageal catheter/probe (esophageal approach). In the latter case, if esophageal Doppler velocimetry is used, the same catheter can be used for the placement of the electrodes and for an ultrasound transducer.
