  • Patent number: 7359167
Abstract: A leakage-current detection and interruption apparatus includes a plug adapted to receive an alternating current voltage, pairs of separable contacts adapted to receive the AC voltage from the plug, and an operating mechanism adapted to open and close the contacts. A power cord includes line and neutral power conductors adapted to conduct the AC voltage from the contacts to the load, a ground conductor, and two non-load carrying, non-ground conductors. One or both of the conductors do not shield one or both of the power conductors. A detection circuit is adapted to detect cord faults. The detection circuit includes a ground fault detection circuit having a current transformer with an opening through which the power conductors pass. The ground fault detection circuit cooperates with the non-load carrying, non-ground conductors to detect one or more of the cord faults and with the operating mechanism to interrupt the detected faults.

  • Patent number: 7349188
Abstract: An arc fault detector analyzes patterns in a sequence of counts of interval to interval increases or decreases in integrated current for patterns characteristic of arc faults. In AC systems, the interval can be a full cycle or in an alternative embodiment, the changes in integrated current for positive and negative half cycles are separately determined and then interleaved before the change counts are calculated. The count sequence is reset when patterns characteristic of phenomena other than an arc fault are detected to avoid nuisance trips.

  • Patent number: 7339803
Abstract: A fault handling system for short circuit recovery in three-phase multiple-level inverter bridges, used to drive inductive loads, to assure a proper sequence for turning-off switches in the inverter bridge. Switches are selected for use in the inverter bridge so that outer switches toward the most positive and most negative bus voltage levels of the inverter bridge have lower transconductances than inner switches closest to an output phase of the inverter bridge. Additionally, driver cards driving outer switches utilize lower magnitude excitation control signals than driver cards driving inner switches. Driver cards driving outer switches, when detecting desaturation of an on-state switch, are set to automatically command the outer switch to an off-state, whereas driver cards driving inner switches wait for instructions from a controller before taking action.
