  • Patent number: 5635574
Abstract: A method for the production of a microsphere without use of a dispersion stabilizer is disclosed which permits the microsphere to be produced in the form of discrete particles readily treatable for purification. The method which produces this microsphere comprises the steps of dissolving in an organic solvent such as an alcohol a monomer mixture including an ethylenically unsaturated amide and 10 to 70% by weight, based on 100% by weight of said monomer mixture, of a cross-linking agent thereby preparing a mixed solution, keeping said mixed solution at a temperature in the range of from 30.degree. to 95.degree. C., and adding thereto at least one initiator selected from the group consisting of peroxide type initiators and azo type initiators in an amount such as to be contained therein at a final concentration in the range of from 1.times.10.sup.-5 to 8.times.10.sup.-2 mol/liter thereby inducing polymerization of said monomer mixture.

  • Patent number: 5608135
Abstract: The chlorine content in a chlorinated hydrocarbon in the presence or absence of air and moisture can be reduced by bringing the chlorinated hydrocarbon into contact with a dechlorination reagent which comprises (i) a complex of a substantially nontoxic metal having at least two oxidation states and (ii) a reducing agent which reductively returns the complex from its second oxidation step to its first oxidation stage. A representative embodiment involves bis-(.eta..sup.5 -cyclopentadienyl)titanium dichloride and sodium tetrahydridoborate.

  • Patent number: 5606971
Abstract: A method and devices for Shear Wave Elasticity Imaging (SWEI). The method employs a focused ultrasound transducer which remotely induces a shear wave in a tissue by sending modulated ultrasonic pulses. The shear wave of the frequency of the modulating signal is detected. The values of the shear modulus and dynamic shear viscosity of tissue are evaluated from the measured values of velocity and attenuation of shear waves. Several devices for carrying out the method are described. Devices based on the method can be used as a diagnostic tool in the detection of abnormalities in tissue, such as those caused by cancer or other lesions and characterizing processes in tissues accompanied by changes in their mechanical properties.

  • Patent number: 5602749
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for monitoring machinery in which data is collected and stored based on application specific retention rules. Based on an alarm value, data records are adjusted by reducing the spectral resolution, coefficient precision and time intervals between records. An alarm is activated when the data value is greater than a predetermined alarm threshold value. Memory management can compare the memory availability to projected requirements. If the projected memory requirements exceeds memory availability, the data records can be interactively decimated. When decimation cannot make available sufficient memory for projected requirements within the retention rules, an alarm is issued. Collected data can be transferred with a removable nonvolatile memory or infrared communications with a computer device.

  • Patent number: 5592845
Abstract: This invention relates to a novel method and apparatus for producing cold finished bar flats with improved bright surface condition. The bar flats are produced by a rolled method in a continuous economical process. A strip is fed to a shaving apparatus for removing burrs formed during slitting. Cold finishing rollers perform cold reduction of the strip to a predetermined thickness. Edge conditioning rollers smooth the edges of the strip and size the strip to a predetermined width. Preferably, the edge conditioning rollers alternate with the cold reduction rollers.

  • Patent number: 5590170
Abstract: This invention relates to a high resolution X-ray imaging device for congruently combining an optical image from a video system with a fluoroscopic X-ray image from a fluoroscopic imaging system. An X-ray beam is directed towards a predetermined position of an object to be inspected and an X-ray image is received at the fluoroscopic imaging system for generating the fluoroscopic X-ray image. A mirror is positioned between the fluoroscopic imaging system and the X-ray beam. The X-ray beam passes substantially unattenuated through the mirror. Preferably, the mirror is formed of a composition having elements with an atomic number of less than 14. An optical image of the predetermined location of the object is reflected off of the mirror. The optical image and the fluoroscopic X-ray image can be combined into a superimposed image.
