  • Patent number: 5294470
Abstract: A seal comprising a substrate which is at least translucent to light having a transparent masking material disposed in an indicia-defining pattern on the inner surface of the substrate. A colorant layer is disposed over the masking material and extends beyond the pattern. There is an adhesive disposed at least over the area of the colorant. The present invention also includes a tamper indicating opaque container such as an envelope or carton has a window defined within the closure flap. A translucent or transparent panel overlaying the window has a transparent masking material of low adhesion properties disposed in an indicia-defining pattern. A colorant layer is disposed over the transparent masking material and an adhesive in turn is disposed over the colorant layer and transparent masking material.

  • Patent number: 5284353
Abstract: An independent suspension for use in a front wheel or a rear wheel of an automobile is provided. It produces a varied characteristic of camber variation for a fixed roll center height and a fixed scuff variation and, consequently, improves freedom of suspension design and offers enhanced operational stability. An upper arm is divided into a knucle side upper arm and a vehicle side upper arm, the two upper arms are interconnected so as to be shakeable in the direction of vertical movement of the wheel, and the vehicle side upper arm and a lower arm are interconnected through the medium of a rigid member having the opposite ends thereof adapted for free vibration. This independent suspension is particularly suitable for use in the Wishbone type independent suspension.

  • Patent number: 5282424
Abstract: A method and apparatus is capable of high-speed transportation of passengers and/or freight. Vehicles (22) are operated along a guideway (14) as a result of the interaction between vehicle lift, steering and propulsion apparatus, each of which includes coil assemblies that are mounted on the vehicle (22), and magnet assemblies mounted on the guideway (14). Vehicle propulsion is provided by the interaction of currents on the vehicle (22) with time-varying magnetic fields that are generated along the guideway (14). The coils and magnets interact in accordance with the magnitude of electric current passing through the coils and the strength of the magnets' fields, to give lift and directional control to the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5282692
Abstract: A plurality of rigid bars, made of wood, plastic or other material, are joined together to form an articulated assembly. A rope is threaded through bores formed in the bars. Spacers are placed over the rope between the bars. Ends of the spacers can be angled for inclining, declining or flat arrangements of adjacent bars. In the alternative, ends of spacers can be rounded and received in a rounded depression of the bore. In an alternate embodiment, flexible interlocking elements are connected to adjacent bars. Interlocking elements can have engaging male and female portions or can be screwed together. Each male and female portion can pass through a plurality of bars. When laid flat over a surface, the articulated assembly may be used as a support that forms a deck, walkway, or similar structure. Other uses of the assembly include a latticework, a barrier and a vertical support.

  • Patent number: 5281290
Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for forming a textured pattern on a heated substrate. An extruder forms the heated substrate. A textured pattern is applied to a transfer sheet by rotary screening. Thereafter, contact is made between the textured pattern and the substrate for adhering the textured pattern to the substrate. Since the textured pattern has a greater affinity for the substrate than for the transfer sheet, the transfer sheet can be removed from the textured pattern adhered to the substrate. In a preferred application, the textured pattern formed on the substrate can be used as a vertical, horizontal or venetian blind.

  • Patent number: 5275684
Abstract: A printing system transfer unit includes features which permit it to be coupled to the output sections of a variety of commercially available printing and copying machine. The system transfers thin foils onto printed indicia. The transfer unit has its own self-contained drive mechanism that may be operator adjusted to perform at the proper speed to permit the throughput of the transfer unit to match that of the printer and to minimize paper and foil jams and creases. A sensitive paper sensor is provided for initiating the transfer cycle. The transfer cycle includes the interposition of a transfer sheet and a printer output sheet between a heated roller and a pressure roller to effect transfer. The pressure roller, the transfer sheet and the heater roller are automatically separated from each other and remain in their inactive position, prepared to move into the transfer-cycle position in response to an output signal from the paper sensor.

  • Patent number: 5273467
Abstract: A marine pump jet apparatus is described which is attached to the lower unit of a conventional outboard motor. The pump jet, which replaces the usual propeller element, consists of an axial flow pump containing a bladed impeller and stator vanes enclosed in a housing. In conventional outboards, exhaust gas flows downward from the power head through a duct in the motor and rearward through ducts in the motor gear case and the propeller hub to be discharged under water. In the present apparatus, before the exhaust reaches the gearcase, it is directed into a diversion passage which causes it to exit (still under water) above the upper surface of the pump jet. A trough is provided in the upper surface of the pump jet housing. The diversion passage directs a portion of the exhaust stream into the trough, thereby reducing drag on the motor.
