The spring assistance pivot device includes a winding device that can be adjusted in use for varying forward torque for varying situations.

    Abstract: A highly sensitive silicon micro-machined sensor package is provided for use in a micro-g environment that can also resist high shock in excess of 5000 g. The sensor is provided to measure acceleration in cooperation with associated electronics which are required to have electrical contact with sensor elements. The sensor is sealed in a high vacuum environment, and is arranged and designed to be free of temperature induced stress to the sensor. The sensor die package assembly comprises a silicon micro-machined sensor die, a ceramic package, two contact springs, a shorting clip, solder preform, a metal lid and a getter foil for ensuring a good vacuum for an extended period. The sensor die comprises a moving mass with eight supporting flexures on both sides of the proof mass. The proof mass's movement is protected on both sides by a top and a bottom cap. Acceleration applied to the package and the die causes the proof mass to move vertically in relation with the adjacent caps.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring and compensating for stray capacitance of a micro-machined sensor of an accelerometer system is disclosed. Stray capacitance differences between a top plate and a sensing element and between a bottom plate and the sensing element degrade accelerometer performance if not compensated for. Measurement of stray capacitance difference is achieved by operating the accelerometer in two calibration phases and measuring the steady-state output voltage in each of the two phases. In calibration phase 1, no force is applied to the sensor during clock intervals 1-4. In calibration phase 2, a dummy force up is applied and then a dummy force down is applied during those intervals 1-4. The difference in the output voltage of the two calibration phases is representative of the difference in stray capacitance of the sensor. Capacitance is added to the top or bottom plates in an amount proportional to the measured stray capacitance.

Compared to prior art, this invention provides a dramatic reduction of seal and shaft wear in abrasive environments and provides a significant increase in seal life.

The paper has a plurality of perforations for permitting detachment of paper sections from the loose paper end of the roll. A linear density of six perforations or less per inch are formed along the detachment line to facilitate detachment of each paper section without permitting premature detachment of the paper section within the center feed roll dispenser. Alternatively, control over the separation strength is provided by one or more perforations comprising less than seventy percent of the base line. Separation control is provided by the number or perforations per linear inch, by the total ratio of perforations versus paper along the detachment base line, or by the perforation shape 1.

    Abstract: A double shouldered high torque resistance threaded connection for drill stem components having enhanced resistance to torque forces, tensile loads and material stress and fatigue is disclosed. The tool joint is provided with threads having a 75.degree. included angle between the thread flanks thereof and with generally elliptical root surfaces to minimize material stress and fatigue during operation under high torque and high tensile loads. When made up, the double intrerengaging shoulders of the threaded tool joint are in firm face to face engagement permitting torque forces and tensile loads to propagate through the tool joint in a manner that minimizes bending forces and minimizes high stress concentration so that the resulting service life of the tool joint is significantly enhanced.

    Abstract: A high performance method and apparatus for testing a closed loop transducer is disclosed. A test bitstream signal is combined with a .SIGMA..DELTA. feedback bitstream of the transducer to produce a combined bitstream which is converted to a physical feedback to the sensor of the transducer. The .SIGMA..DELTA. bitstream output of the transducer is recorded for later analysis so as to test characteristics of the transducer. The test bitstream signal is preferably an oversampled, pulse density modulated signal. A testing arrangement is provided which is based upon the storage of short-length test patterns which are repetitively accessed to form a continuous test pattern. The test bitstream provided by the method of the invention produces very low noise and low distortion test signals where a repetitive test pattern is equivalent in length to one period of the test signal.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for replacing an existing looped non-metallic mooring line (20) from a floating anchor handling vessel (10) anchored to the sea floor. The existing looped line (20) extends about a sheave (34) adjacent a subsea anchor means (24) and opposed ends (26) of the looped line (20) are connected to a mounting member (30) on the vessel (10) for securing the ends (26) of the existing mooring line (20). The new replacement line (20A) is attached to an end of the looped existing line (20) and the old existing line (20) is hauled in while the looped replacement line (20A) is payed out from the vessel (10) about the sheave (34) for return to the vessel. The looped replacement line (20A) is disconnected from the old line (20) and the ends of the new replacement line (20A) are secured to a mounting member (30) on the vessel.

    Abstract: A swivel seal assembly is defined for providing sealed high pressure fluid communication between relatively rotatable generally coaxial conduits where dynamic runout and static misalignment may occur to one conduit relative to the other. A generally tubular washpipe is mounted in pivotally articulating relation to one conduit, and a generally tubular seal housing is telescoped over the washpipe and mounted in pivotally articulating relation to the other conduit. High pressure, staged rotary seals are supported by the seal housing and maintain bearing and sealing engagement with the washpipe so that the seal housing and washpipe articulate in unison in response to said static misalignment and dynamic runout, thereby virtually eliminating relative lateral motion between the seal housing and washpipe and minimizing rotary seal extrusion damage.

    Abstract: A subsea flowline (10) deployed onto the sea floor (S) has tie-in points for interfacing other subsea facilities. Mudmats (14A, 14B, 14C) support hubs (16A, 16B, 16C) at the tie-in points. One embodiment shown in FIG. 2 has a cradle (22) supporting flowline (10) for relative rotative movement. Hydraulic jacks (26) are connected to arms (24) to position and maintain hub (16) in a vertical orientation. Another embodiment, shown in FIG. 3, has an outer swivel sleeve (21A) which is mounted on mudmat (14A) and receiving flowline (10A) for relative rotation. An annular fluid chamber or toroid (25A) provides fluid communication between flowline (10) and hub (16A) connected to outer swivel sleeve (21A). Another embodiment, shown in FIG. 4, combines the features and characteristics illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3.

For removal or retrieval of tree cap (28) from the installed position on subsea tree hub (10), fluid pressure is applied through fluid lines (108, 110) for the upward movement of seal plate (68) and tubular seal members (70, 72) from sealing relation with production bore (13) and annulus bore (15).

The fuel discharged from the fuel nozzle (58) strikes the blades (50) to rotate the impeller (47) of pump (46) for dispensing the additive. The additive container (51) has an additive line (56) extending to a pump (46) for the supply of additive thereto for discharge from additive nozzle (54) into the flowing fuel stream. The additive is blended with the flowing fuel stream when discharged. The additive injector (22) may be utilized as a retrofit unit on an existing fuel tank by the removal of fuel tank cap (18) and the insertion of additive dispenser (22) within the tubular inlet (14).

    Abstract: A device and method is disclosed to correct intonation errors and generate vibrato in solo instruments and vocal performances in real time. The device determines the pitch of a musical note produced by voice or instrument and shifts the pitch of that note to produce a very high quality, high fidelity output. The device includes a pitch detector that automatically recognizes the pitch of musical notes quickly. The detected pitch is then used as an input to a pitch corrector that converts the pitch of the input to an output with a desired pitch. The corrected musical note is then in tune with the pitch standard. The device and method employ a microprocessor that samples the signal from a musical instrument or voice at regular intervals using an analog-to-digital converter and then utilizes data derived from an auto-correlation function of the waveform to continuously determine the period of the waveform. The period of the waveform is then compared to a desired period or periods (such as found in a scale).

    Abstract: A portable perfusion/oxygenation module includes respiratory gas driven dual positive displacement pumps coupled to a stacked membrane oxygenator unit for perfusion fluid oxygenation, a valving manifold to control perfusate flow-direction coupled to an organ chamber designed to enable easy installation of organ and maintenance of intra and extra organ fluid pressure. All of the components and oxygen cylinders are fitted into an insulated chest capable of sustaining perfusion and oxygenation for 24 hours. The perfusion/oxygenation apparatus requires no electrical power, is compact with the total weight including the perfusion fluids and organ weighing less than 50 pounds. With low cumulative weight and the extremely low flow rate of gas required to pump the perfusate, the oxygen supply is capable of sustaining pumping operation for 24 hours without gas cylinder change.
