  • Patent number: 7249169
Abstract: A multi-stratum multi-timescale control for self-governing networks provides automatic adaptation to temporal and spatial traffic changes and to network state changes. Microsecond timescale reacting through the routing function, a facet of the lowest stratum, allows a source node to choose the best available route from a sorted list of routes, and to collect information on the state of these routes. Millisecond timescale correcting through the resource allocation function, a facet of the intermediate stratum, allows the network to correct resource allocations based on requirements calculated by the routing function. Long-term provisioning through the provisioning function at the higher stratum allows the network to recommend resource augmentations, based on requirements reported by the resource allocation function. The control is implemented in the network through coordination across edge node controllers, core node controllers, and network controllers.

  • Patent number: 7248882
Abstract: The performance and ease of management of wireless communications environments is improved by a mechanism that enables access points (APs) to perform automatic channel selection. A wireless network can therefore include multiple APs, each of which will automatically choose a channel such that channel usage is optimized. Furthermore, APs can perform automatic power adjustment so that multiple APs can operate on the same channel while minimizing interference with each other. Wireless stations are load balanced across APs so that user bandwidth is optimized. A movement detection scheme provides seamless roaming of stations between APs.

  • Patent number: 7246376
Abstract: In a networked environment, where multiple Internet Service Providers and multi-vendor equipment are involved in e-Business services and applications offering, the risk of overloading the Internet devices are real and security management is a challenge. Internet device traffic overloads could result from spoof attacks, (Denial-of-Service (DoS) or Distributed DoS (DDoS) attacks), device failures, special events, or widespread loads above engineered levels. To solve the problem of Internet security management for integrated optical and wireless devices, a new apparatus and functions running on IP devices are defined in this invention. Each Internet device includes counters and thresholding feature to manage the security attacks and prevent failure of the device being attacked.

  • Patent number: 7237012
Abstract: A data communication network for DiffServ communications includes a customized Java socket factory added to clients connected to a data communication network having a DiffServ-enabled edge router. When an application running on a client system wishes to make a remote procedure call to a remote server system on another network, it makes a call to an RMI stub which invokes an RMI transport layer having the custom socket factory to generate a socket used in the RMI call. The custom socket factory detects when a high priority RMI call is being made and can determine the identity of the calling procedure as well. The socket factory makes a side channel communication to the edge router to provide this information to the edge router, which then makes use of this data when performing DiffServ classification for packets transmitted during the course of the call.

  • Patent number: 7233590
Abstract: Rather than restricting a stream of data to a single channel within a multi-channel link between a source node and a core node, each channel is divided into time slots and the stream of data is distributed among these time slots in several channels. However, to ease the management of switching the stream of data at the core node, simultaneous time slots in each channel may be arranged into “stripes,” such that a particular stripe may only include data segments having a common destination. Switching these stripes of data at the core node requires that the source of such a stripe arrange the frame according to a frame structure provided by the core node. Advantageously, where the frame is striped across an entire link, the present invention provides for a variation on link switching that approaches the topological reach of TDM switching while maintaining relatively straightforward operation at the core node.

  • Patent number: 7212551
Abstract: In a wide-coverage network comprising electronic edge nodes interconnected by bufferless core nodes, where each edge node comprises a source node and a sink node, both sharing an edge-node controller and having means for data storage and managing data buffers, the transfer of bursts from source nodes to sink nodes via the core nodes requires precise time coordination to prevent contention at the bufferless core nodes. A core node preferably comprises a plurality of optical switches each of which may switch entire channels or individual bursts. Each source node has a time counter and each core node has at least one time counter. All time counters have the same period and time-coordination can be realized through an exchange of time-counter readings between each source node and its adjacent core nodes. The time-counter readings are carried in-band, alongside payload data bursts destined to sink nodes, and each must be timed to arrive at a corresponding core node during a designated time interval.

  • Patent number: 7209454
Abstract: An optical channel switch comprising independent optical space switches interconnects electronic data-switch modules to form a high-capacity wide-coverage network. The optical channel switch connects incoming wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) links each originating from a data-switch module to outgoing WDM links each terminating in a data-switch module. The optical space switches are of equal dimension, each having the same number of dual ports (input-output ports). The channels of incoming WDM links are assigned to the input ports of the space switches and the output ports of the space switches are assigned to channels of the outgoing WDM links in a manner which permits a switched path from any data-switch module to any other data-switch module even when the number of data-switch modules substantially exceeds the number of dual ports per space switch. A method of reconfiguring the channel switch in response to varying traffic demand is also disclosed.
