    Abstract: A method of using ultrasonic reflectance to characterize physical properties of fluids, particularly food solutions. In general, the method comprises the steps of: (a) generating longitudinal ultrasonic waves, (b) coupling the transducer to the fluid being investigated, (c) detecting the reflected longitudinal waves, and (d) determining the physical property of interest by correlating certain characteristics of the reflected ultrasonic waves with the physical property being measured. A particular aspect of the invention is a self-calibrating ultrasonic device useful as a solids concentration sensor and/or a dissolution/precipitation sensor. Self calibration is accomplished via a twin delay line. The invention is particularly useful as an on-line sensor in the processing of food solutions such as milk, ketchup, syrup, chocolate and other confectionary.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for separating the organic membrane portion of waste egg shells from the hard inorganic mineral portion thereof, so that each can be used or further processed as desired, thereby addressing the environmental and economic issues associated with disposing of waste egg shells. The membrane and shell are separated by first processing waste eggshells so as to yield small waste eggshell particles. During this processing, the waste eggshell particles are at least slightly abraded, whereby the linking structure between the membrane and shell is at least partially disrupted. Thereafter, the waste eggshell particles are conveyed to a device, which isolates the two components based on their size and weight differences. The methods listed above can provide products from the eggshell waste including precipitated calcium carbonate, membrane, protein, amino acids, collagen and other important components.

    Abstract: The invention is an improved surface aeration impeller for use in a liquid filled tank which particularly increases the surface turbulence and the entrainment of gas into the liquid surface. The impeller is an axial flow impeller and may be either a pitched blade turbine (PBT) or have airfoil shaped blades. In either case, the impeller has a portion which extends radially along an edge thereof which projects above the surface of the liquid being mixed in a vertical direction. The blades of the impeller are modified to include a top horizontal plate to lower the spray height of the liquid and an optional endcap, both of which can enhance and increase the standard aeration efficiency. Preferably, the impeller is rotated in an up-pumping direction and propels the liquid being aerated in a radially upward and outward direction. A sufficient upward surge of liquid is produced so that the liquid is observed to splash back onto the surface a plurality of times in the course of operation of the impeller.

    Abstract: An active vibration control system for controlling excessive or unwanted vibrations in floors or other structures. The system has three main components: (1) velocity sensor w/signal conditioner; (2) feedback controller; and (3) proof-mass actuator. This system works by creating a feedback loop that generates a control force proportional to the velocity, thus adding damping to the controlled modes of floor vibration. In other words, the feedback loop makes the moving mass of the actuator move to counteract the motion of the floor. The system is optimized such that the motor can be driven with a sinusoidal force where the peak force is at or near the full motor capacity at any frequency without exceeding the stroke while maintaining a simple and cost effective feedback controller. Additionally, a relationship between the fundamental natural frequency of the floor system and actuator is established to provide efficient and stable control.

    Abstract: A surface aeration impeller for use in a liquid filled tank. The impeller is rotatable about an axis perpendicular to the static liquid surface. The impeller has a plurality of blades mounted on the underside of a disc or disc-like surface. Each blade has a multi-faceted or curved geometry ranging from vertical at the point of attachment to the disc to partially inclined at the bottom. The blades are spaced circumferentially about the axis and are disposed at acute angles to radial lines from the axis of rotation of the impeller. The lower portions of the blades, which are inclined but non-vertical, are positioned at or below the static liquid surface. When the impeller is rotated, the lower portion pumps the liquid up onto the vertical portion of the blades where the liquid is discharged into a spray umbrella in a direction upwardly and outwardly away from the impeller.

    Abstract: A portable medication cartridge allows for both manual and automated dispensing of tablets or capsules of virtually all sizes through a radial dispensing apparatus. The cartridge may be sealed and encoded with medication and patient identification. A microprocessor controlled medication dispensing apparatus includes a cartridge magazine capable of holding a plurality of cartridges for the same or different patients. The portable medication dispensing apparatus and method detects patient identification data and activates a radial dispensing medication cartridge in response to verification of patient identification data. The radial dispensing medication cartridge may include, for example, a tablet carrier tape having a plurality of tablet packets with at least a partially open side. The tablet carrier tape accommodates different sizes and types of tablets or capsules and is sealed with a cover tape having an identification of the tablets.

    Abstract: A horizontal centrifuge rotor for use in existing and new centrifuges. The horizontal centrifuge rotor includes a rotor bottom with an outer rib encircling the rotor bottom. The outer rib extends upward from the rotor bottom to form an exterior wall about the rotor. There is at least one clearance slot for accepting a specimen holder with a collar. A support surface along each side of the clearance slot supports the specimen holder by the collar and allows rotation of the specimen holder about the collar from a vertical position to a horizontal position. There is a rotor hub in a center of the rotor bottom to allow mounting of the rotor to a motor drive shaft.

    Abstract: A compaction roller particularly useful for vibration compaction of the shoulder area of roadways. The compactor is designed as an attachment for side-mounting to self-propelled or motorized machinery (e.g. a skid steer front loader). The compaction roller contains: (a) a front section comprising a frame connected to a front cylindrical roller; (b) a rear section comprising a frame connected to a rear cylindrical roller; (c) a joining means pivotally connecting said front and rear sections; and (d) a means for attaching to a self-propelled machinery in a side-mounted fashion. The pivoting compactor allows for simultaneous pinching and compacting on two different planes and reduces the hazards of operating a road roller compactor directly on a sloped surface.

    Abstract: A system for providing improved bulk liquid mixing and effective gas-liquid contacting for mass transfer of the gas to the liquid, especially a non-Newtonian liquid, the viscosity of which decreases when under shearing conditions (shear thinning), in an upright tank. An upright draft tube is mounted within the tank and has a lower end spaced from the tank bottom and an upper end spaced below the surface of the liquid in the tank. A plurality of mixing impellers in the draft tube are sufficiently close to each other to establish a field or pattern of agitation to cause shear thinning and upflow throughout the draft tube and which produces significant turbulence at the liquid surface. A plurality of radially inwardly projecting, circumferentially spaced baffles extend from the draft tube and are proximate the mixing impellers to prevent swirling of the liquid within the draft tube.
