  • Patent number: 5731980
Abstract: A metering system includes means for printing postage value. First means are coupled to the printing means for accounting for value printed by the printing means. Second means are coupled to the printing means for accounting for value printed by said printing means. Means determine which of the first and the second accounting means accounts for value printed by said printing means. The system may be arranged where the first accounting means is a smart card chip mounted internal to the metering system and the second accounting means is an external smart card. When the system is operable only one accounting system is rendered operable with priority given to the external smart card.

  • Patent number: 5729716
Abstract: The memory security circuit detects when a memory unit has been accessed independently of an address instruction of a programmable microprocessor. The microprocessor is programmed to provide a unique address signal for write enabling a discrete memory unit. The memory unit has a write enable pin and chip select pin which when enabled in combination permits writing into the memory unit. The address decoder receives the unique address instruction and causes a write enable signal and a chip select signal to be generated for that memory unit. The write enable signal and chip select signal are to be received, respectively, by the write enable pin and the chip select pin of the memory unit. The memory security circuit monitors the write enable pin and the chip select pin of the memory unit and generates a first output signal when the memory unit has been properly addressed.

  • Patent number: 5724524
Abstract: The invention is a method and system for listing and brokering a commodity and its financial derivatives. The method identifies a plurality of characteristics of a particular commodity, and then enters those characteristics into the database of a data processing system utilizing a real-time clock. An exchange market for the commodity is established based upon a pre-selected set of its characteristics; and, after a market price for the commodity has been set, a class (or classes) of financial derivatives is established together with a financial exchange market for those derivatives. The characteristics of the derivatives comprise: a common descriptive link between varied commodity types; a contract length that runs from the purchase date of the contract to the performance date for the commodity; and, a contract price.

  • Patent number: 5724245
Abstract: A postal scale having a programmable capability to automatically select inscriptions to be included in a postage meter indicia. The postal scale includes a CPU and memory, a load cell for determining the weight of a mail piece, a keyboard for input of postal information and a display for output of information to an operator; and determines postage value data for a mail piece in a conventional manner. In an inscription selection mode the postal scale outputs inscription selection data to a postage meter to select an appropriate inscription to be included in the meter indicia. The scale determines the inscription selection data as a prioritized function of postal information input by an operator to determine postage value data. In a programming mode an operator may program the function as a table stored in the scale memory.

  • Patent number: 5717596
Abstract: The invention is a method for franking, accounting, and billing of mail pieces and services. The method is based upon the ability of a data processing system to communicate with a postage meter through the use of a meter linking device. Additionally, an application program within the data processing system, in which a customer account can be established and/or altered, is initialized. Customer account data is then entered into the application. Once the customer account has been established or verified, a transaction is initiated. First, the mail pieces to be placed into the mail stream are weighed on a weighing scale. The weight is converted using an appropriate rate table so as to determine the amount of postage to be franked by the postage meter. The postage meter performs a franking of the mail piece and the system records the amount of postage applied; further, the system calculates any discounts or surcharges that are applicable to this customer's account.

  • Patent number: 5717166
Abstract: The invention is a system for combining the outputs of two transducers to provide a continuous reading over the combined ranges of the two transducers. The system applies an A.C. signal to the appropriate transducer; the steering for the excitation is controlled by the system microprocessor. The transducers are connected in series mechanically such that the low-range transducer is mechanically stopped before it is overloaded. The outputs of the transducers are connected in parallel and applied to the pre-amp which amplifies the A.C. error signal. The signal from the pre-amp is then applied to the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for conversion. The ADC converts the pre-amp signal which is then sent to the system microprocessor over a serial link. The system microprocessor then applies the appropriate weighing algorithms to the data and then conveys that information to the parent system.
