Method for controlling speed in a tape feeding, cutting and ejection apparatus for a mailing machine
Patent number: 5539852Abstract: A method for controlling the speed of a motor for a tape drive in a mailing machine includes providing an optical sensor for signaling the appearance of slots in a slotted wheel connected to the motor shaft. The time intervals between slots are used to make a prediction in respect of expected future time intervals and the motor speed is adjusted in accordance with the predicted value to obtain the desired value. For best results, the data is received at the microprocessor using the "capture" mode of operation in order to avoid excessive errors due to a "busy" processor. The invention enables the small motor of a tape drive to avoid over and undershoot even when operating under highly variable load conditions.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1994Date of Patent: July 23, 1996Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Dennis M. Patent number: 5538239Abstract: Apparatus for transporting documents through a right angle transfer includes a deck, first transporting structure for transporting documents over the deck in a first direction, and second transporting structure for seizing control of the documents from the first transporting structure and transporting the documents over the deck in a second direction that is at a 45.degree. angle to the first direction. As the documents are released from the control of the second transporting structure, third transporting structure transports the documents in a third direction that is orthogonal to the first direction,. A guide strap extending in the second direction between the second transporting structure and the third transporting structure prevents the transported documents from skewing or lifting away from the deck. The second transporting structure includes a plurality of idler transfer rollers biased against a corresponding plurality of driven transfer rollers.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1994Date of Patent: July 23, 1996Assignee: Pitney BowesInventors: David R. Patent number: 5539287Abstract: A tape cutting mechanism uses a bi-directional motor and a clutch arrangement. However, with the use of such a clutch in an inexpensive open loop control system, the dynamic energy stored in the motor armature at the initiation of the cutting sequence is greater than the maximum energy required and the maximum cutting energy requirements vary considerably. Leftover energy is removed from the system in order to prevent a large impact at the end of its stroke which may damage the clutch mechanism and to decrease the noise by controlling the bi-directional motor for oscillating a member for cutting a tape and for feeding the cut tape.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1994Date of Patent: July 23, 1996Assignee: Pitney BowesInventors: Dennis M. Patent number: 5529410Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling tension on a sheet material in a reel-to-reel transport system. The sheet material is feed along a defined path from a supply reel to a take-up reel. A motor is operatively connected to the take-up reel for applying a torque to the take-up reel while a sensor is positioned to detect rotation of the supply reel. A microcontroller enables the motor with an initial PWM pwm.sub.o to create torque on the take-up reel and then incrementally increases the PWM. When the sensor indicates that the supply reel has moved, the current PWM is stored in memory as pwm.sub.i. This pwm.sub.i is subsequently used by the apparatus to determine a desired tension on the thermal ribbon.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1994Date of Patent: June 25, 1996Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Kevin D.
