  • Patent number: 4581114
Abstract: A generic, simple, economical method for making and assembling either a monopolar or bipolar filter press type electrochemical cell unit. The first feature is making a novel central cell element. This cell element is an integrally formed, unitary, cast structural element for filter press electrolysis cell which incorporates into a single cell unit the central barrier between the peripheral boundaries for the adjacent anolyte compartment and adjacent catholyte compartment of two electrolysis cells located on opposite sides of the central barrier. Also incorporated into the single cast structural element are anode bosses and cathode bosses extending outwardly from opposite sides of the central barrier. These bosses not only serve as mechanical support for their respective flat plate anode and cathode elements, but also they serve as stand-off means and electrical current collectors and dispersers from the cathode of one electrolysis cell to the anode of the next cell.

  • Patent number: 4083873
    Abstract: The title compounds correspond to formulas O--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.3.sup..sym.).sub.2.2HSO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. and )--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.3.sup..sym.).sub.2 SO.sub.4.sup..crclbar.. They are prepared by (A) reacting by contacting HOCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.3.sup..sym. HSO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. with .sup..sym. NH.sub.3 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O--SO.sub.3.sup..crclbar. in the presence of a catalytic amount of sulfuric acid at a temperature greater than about 140.degree. C, thereby forming a reaction product comprising O--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.3.sup..sym.).sub.2. 2HSO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. ; and (B) reacting by contacting the reaction product of step (A) or O--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.3.sup..sym.).sub.2 . 2HSO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. with a methanol solution of HOCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.2, thereby forming O--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.3.sup..sym.).sub.2 SO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. as a solid precipitate. The latter compound is extremely useful as a chemical intermediate in forming bis(2-aminoethyl) ether.

  • Patent number: 4080279
Abstract: An electrolytic cell expandable anode assembly particularly useful as anodes in commercial chlor-alkali productions cells, said assembly having two parallel, foraminous working faces and a simple spreading means. This spreading means plays no role in the conduction of electricity from any external power source to the working faces. Rather, said electrical conduction role is performed by an intermediate, stationary conducting means connecting the working faces at one of these ends which also physically holds the anodes in place within the cell by rigidly connecting them to one end of each of the working faces and rigidly connected then to the anode base of said anode assembly.
