  • Patent number: 8111612
Abstract: A protected communication network utilizes a link-based recovery strategy that supports independent recovery paths for individual demands, where each link includes one or more lines and each line can support one or more demands. Failure of one or more—or even all—of the lines/ports of a link will typically result in the independent rerouting of the affected demands along one or more link-detour paths. The flexibility afforded by recovery at the granularity of a demand supports the computation of more-optimal link-detour paths and a corresponding increase in sharing of network resources between disjoint failures. The network also addresses the restricted case where all demands on a line/port are recovered along the same link-detour path.

  • Patent number: 8102930
Abstract: In one embodiment, a demapper uses two hybrid-QPSK constellations to demap pairs of equalized data symbols recovered from 16-QAM, DCM OFDM symbols, wherein the equalized data symbols in a pair correspond to the same four-bit group. A first hybrid-QPSK constellation is generated by combining the real components of both 16-QAM mapping constellations onto one coordinate plane. The demapper generates a first set of two decision variables by combining the real components of each equalized data symbol in a pair to correspond to the first hybrid-QPSK coordinate plane. A log-likelihood ratio is then calculated for both decision variables in the set to determine likelihood estimates for the first and second bits of the four-bit group. This process is repeated for the imaginary components of each corresponding pair of equalized data symbols to generate likelihood estimates for the third and fourth bits of the four-bit group.

  • Patent number: 8098844
Abstract: Spatial noise suppression for audio signals involves generating a ratio of powers of difference and sum signals of audio signals from two microphones and then performing noise suppression processing, e.g., on the sum signal where the suppression is limited based on the power ratio. In certain embodiments, at least one of the signal powers is filtered (e.g., the sum signal power is equalized) prior to generating the power ratio. In a subband implementation, sum and difference signal powers and corresponding the power ratio are generated for different audio signal subbands, and the noise suppression processing is performed independently for each different subband based on the corresponding subband power ratio, where the amount of suppression is derived independently for each subband from the corresponding subband power ratio. In an adaptive filtering implementation, at least one of the audio signals can be adaptively filtered to allow for array self-calibration and modal-angle variability.

  • Patent number: 8090401
Abstract: The invention is a virtual gateway that mediates between a dual-mode subscriber device and an IP-based PBX. In particular, the virtual gateway includes a WLAN interface for communicating with the dual-mode subscriber device and a network interface (wired or wireless) for communicating with the IP-based PBX over the Internet. As such, the virtual gateway may relay voice and call control instructions between the dual-mode subscriber device and the IP-based PBX, and may provide the same call control functions to the dual-mode subscriber device provided by the call control processor in existing dual-mode phones. The invention further provides a dual-mode subscriber device suitable for operation with the virtual gateway. Because the dual-mode subscriber device does not require a call control processor, the battery life and cost of the device are significantly improved.

  • Patent number: 8089713
Abstract: In a hard-disc drive, a defect region on the hard disc is detected by generating two statistical measures (e.g., ?1(k) and ?2(k)) based on signal values (e.g., x[n] or y[n]) and soft-decision values (e.g., L[n]) corresponding to the signal values. The measures are compared to detect the location of the defect region of the hard drive. Using the soft-decision values reduces fluctuations in a ratio of the statistical measures compared to a ratio formed from statistical measures that are not based on soft-decision values, resulting in a more-reliable test for detecting defect regions.

  • Patent number: 8090122
Abstract: According to one embodiment, during mixing of an N-channel input signal to generate an M-channel output signal, in at least one frequency sub-band, magnitude equalization is applied to the mixed channel signals such that an amplitude sum magnitude for the N input channels (e.g., the magnitude of a sum of estimated amplitudes of the N input channels) is approximately equal to an amplitude sum magnitude for the M output channels (e.g., the magnitude of a sum of estimated amplitudes of the M output channels). In one implementation, magnitude equalization is applied to one or more sub-bands (e.g., those below 1 kHz), and power equalization is applied to one or more other sub-bands (e.g., those above 1 kHz) to reduce coloration effects in the output signal.

  • Patent number: 8085837
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention processes a signal of interest through an optional reference channel, combines the resulting signal with white noise, and then processes the noisy signal through a reference receiver. Two metrics are calculated from the results of that processing: Non-Compensable Data-Dependent Jitter (NC-DDJ) and Enhanced Transmitter and Waveform Dispersion Penalty (Enhanced TWDP). Within the reference receiver, a variable delay module sweeps the eye opening defined by the noise-free samples of the signal of interest and determines the transition points (i.e., edges) of the eye opening. Those transition points are compared to the Unit Interval to yield NC-DDJ. Further, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the noisy samples of the signal of interest is compared to the SNR of an ideal receiver (i.e., matched filter) driven by an ideal transmitter via an ideal channel with additive white Gaussian noise n(t) to yield Enhanced TWDP.

  • Patent number: 8081114
Abstract: A representative embodiment of the invention provides an antenna having an electrically conducting ground plane and an array of electrically conducting strips located at an offset distance from the ground plane. Electrically conducting pathways, each attached to the middle portion of the corresponding strip, connect the strips to the ground plane. Electrically conducting lips, each attached to an edge of the corresponding conducting strip, extend about halfway toward the ground plane. The size of the array is smaller than the wavelength of the fundamental radiation mode supported by the antenna. Advantageously, the antenna has a bandwidth about three times larger than that of a comparably sized prior-art patch antenna.

  • Patent number: 8077820
Abstract: In one embodiment, a frequency correction (FC) burst is detected in a complex signal received by a mobile station of a GSM/EDGE wireless communications network by applying the complex signal to one or more correlation paths of a burst detector within the mobile station. Each correlation path generates a correlation signal by multiplying a copy of the complex signal by the complex conjugate of a delayed version of the complex signal and then applies a correlation filter to the correlation signal. A combined correlation signal is formed by combining the filtered correlation signals from the one or more correlation paths. Peak detection is applied to the combined correlation signal, where a detected peak corresponds to the occurrence of the burst in the complex input signal. The correlation filters are designed such that the peak in the combined correlation signal occurs prior to the end of the burst.

  • Patent number: 8077427
Abstract: In one embodiment, a hard-disk drive system performs fly-height control using a read-back mode and a loop-back mode. The read-back mode measures first and second harmonics pre-recorded on the medium and divides the first measurement by the second to obtain a read-back mode harmonic ratio. The loop-back mode measures the same first and second harmonics; however, the harmonics are provided by a write precompensation circuit rather than the medium. Further, the loop-back mode measurements are performed using asynchronous sampling to address aliasing and quantization errors. The first measurement is divided by the second to generate a loop-back harmonic ratio. In logarithm domain, the loop-back ratio is subtracted from the read-back mode ratio to remove environment-induced variations in the read path electronic circuits. The resulting harmonic ratio is subtracted from an initial harmonic ratio determined, for example, during manufacturing, to determine how much the harmonic ratio has changed.

  • Patent number: 8077812
Abstract: A wireless receiver detects signals generated with a multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter. The receiver applies maximum-likelihood detection (MLD) for soft-output signal detection, where an MLD exhaustive search across all candidate vectors is performed recursively by computing and accumulating the differences between, for example, the Euclidean metrics of consecutive candidate tests. Difference terms used for the accumulation are also calculated recursively. An ordering of candidates, such as by a triangular-waveform shaped ordering, is employed such that only one candidate variable is changed between any two consecutive candidate evaluations, leading to a reduced set of computations.

  • Patent number: 8078065
Abstract: According to one embodiment, an optical receiver adapted to recover OOK or PAM data carried by a modulated optical carrier has an optical detector adapted to produce a sequence of vector pairs having first and second digital vectors indicative of complex values of first and second polarization components, respectively, of the modulated optical carrier at a corresponding sampling time. The optical receiver also has a digital processor that is connected to receive the sequence and is adapted to perform a rotation on each pair in a manner that tends to compensate for polarization rotation produced by transmitting the modulated optical carrier from an optical transmitter thereof to the optical receiver. The digital processor is further adapted to estimate values of the OOK or PAM data encoded onto each of the first and second polarization components based on the vectors produced by the rotation in a manner responsive to values of energy errors in the estimated values.
