  • Patent number: 5061854
Abstract: A short scan passive infrared remote sensor for detecting a target chemical pecies, located some distance from the center burst, includes a telescope for targeting a remote gas, a beam splitter means for splitting a beam from the target gas and sending one portion along a first path to an infrared detector and sending a second portion along a second path longer than the first path to the infrared detector. The second path is variable by providing a moving mirror a first distance away from the beam splitter which is 0.5 mm farther away from the beam splitter than the fixed mirror. By this arrangement, a mirror movement of only 0.5 mm is required to obtain an equivalent of 8 cm.sup.-1 spectral information for processing with time domain digital filters. The information from the infrared detector is converted from analog to digital and fed to a digital signal processor. The resulting interferogram is then filtered by a microprocessor using a FIR linear digital filter.

  • Patent number: 5052618
Abstract: The invention includes an apparatus for protecting plants from frost. A jet urbine engine has an input into which a first liquid and a second liquid are injected into the exhaust stream of the engine. The jet engine also has an exhaust nozzle supplying an aerosol of the first liquid microencapsulated in the second liquid. The aerosol is dispersed about the plants to be protected from frost thereby to form a mist which acts as a protective radiation barrier for the plants. The invention also includes a method for protecting plants from frost.

  • Patent number: 5038683
Abstract: A high explosive assembly and a method are disclosed for projecting a long od at high velocity with enhanced penetrating energy. The high explosive assembly has an elongated core of a first high explosive having a first Chapman-Jouguet detonation velocity, an elongated liner positioned substantially along the longitudinal axis of the core, and an elongated jacket of a second high explosive encasing the core and having a second Chapman-Jouguet detonation velocity greater than the core Chapman-Jouguet detonation velocity. The jacket high explosive, upon detonation, continuously initiates detonation of the core high explosive by an imposed oblique detonation front which converges toward the center of the detonating core with time, until a trailing mach stem emerges therefrom as detonation progresses.

  • Patent number: 5033827
Abstract: An optical oscillator uses a monochromatic light beam passing through a poelectric crystal subjected to acoustic vibrations which cause the emission of a diffracted light beam. The undiffracted beam is detected by photodetecting means and generates a first voltage signal. The diffracted beam is passed through a unit for delaying the passage of the beam, e.g. a fiber optics loop, and detected by photodetecting means to generate a second voltage signal. The signals are combined and fed to a control unit which allows a radio frequency signal to reach the piezoelectric crystal, causing acoustic vibrations. The time delay and voltage output relationships in the loop associated with the diffracted beam cause oscillation and control the frequency of such oscillations. The oscillations can be amplitude and frequency modulated by variation of appropriate circuit parameters.

  • Patent number: 5014592
Abstract: A breech mechanism embodies a multi-lug sliding breech block having a pluity of pairs of lugs. At the instant before firing, the bearing surfaces of at least one pair of lugs are spaced a predetermined distance apart from the bearing surfaces of the respective threads, or lugs, of the breech ring. When the cannon is fired, a reactive force acting on the breech block elastically deforms the material of the ring and block, forcing all the bearing surfaces into an abutting contact relationship whereby the stresses produced within the material of the mechanism are more uniformly distributed throughout the breech ring and the breech block thereby increasing the service life of the mechanism.

  • Patent number: H994
Abstract: Current state of the art air core homopolar generators employ large time ying magnetic fields (4 Tesla Range). These high fields are required for proper voltage, but also induce significant eddy currents. Use of novel transposed rotor conductors and a novel transposed coil winding reduces these currents to acceptable levels. Furthermore use of a segmented stator current collection system further reduces the flow of eddy currents.
