  • Patent number: 8348137
Abstract: Connections can be made to microwires comprising a conductor of a lower melting point metal (e.g., indium 290) in a sheath of higher melting point polymer (e.g., PETG) by placing a small diameter spring, slightly larger in inside diameter than the outer diameter of the microwire, and of a readily solderable material over the distal end of the microwire. The conductor of the microwire is then soldered to the distal end of the spring in any of several ways that result in a solid member at the distal end of the microwire. The flexible spring provides a flexible support for the microwire, so that as the microwire flexes in use, the spring provides a strain relief; that is, the proximal portion of the spring flexes along with the microwire, so that the microwire bends over some distance rather than at a single point.

  • Patent number: 8236376
Abstract: A strand is coated with a powdered material by first applying a layer of hot polymer resin to the strand, and spraying the powdered material onto the resin-coated strand from at least three nozzles disposed along the processing path and spaced radially therearound. The spray apparatus is disposed within nested containers so as to limit the escape of overspray powder. The powder-coated strand may be heat-set to increase the adhesion of the powder.

  • Patent number: 8214097
Abstract: A hybrid vehicle comprises an internal combustion engine, a traction motor, a starter motor, and a battery bank, all controlled by a microprocessor in accordance with the vehicle's instantaneous torque demands so that the engine is run only under conditions of high efficiency, typically only when the load is at least equal to 30% of the engine's maximum torque output. In some embodiments, a turbocharger may be provided, activated only when the load exceeds the engine's maximum torque output for an extended period; a two-speed transmission may further be provided, to further broaden the vehicle's load range. A hybrid brake system provides regenerative braking, with mechanical braking available in the event the battery bank is fully charged, in emergencies, or at rest; a control mechanism is provided to control the brake system to provide linear brake feel under varying circumstances.

  • Patent number: 8102285
Abstract: A modular debouncing device is adapted to be connected between an input device, such as a switch or sensor element, and a controlled element and analyzes an input signal from the input device according to a stored debouncing algorithm in order to determine whether a change of state of the input signal should be responded to by controlling an output control signal to change its state.

  • Patent number: 8066704
Abstract: An improved electrode for electrosurgery comprises at least one orifice in the active surface of the electrode connected to a lumen in the probe of larger cross-sectional area than the area of the orifice(s), the lumen being connected to a vacuum, such that a venturi is formed extending from the one or more orifices in the active surface of the electrode to the lumen, whereby flow of fluid, ablated tissue, and other debris in the vicinity of the surgical site is accelerated through the orifice(s), reducing clogging, whereby any particle passing through the orifice(s) is unlikely to become clogged downstream, and whereby the edges of the orifice(s) are ablative, tending to reduce any particles caught at the orifice(s) to a size small enough to pass therethrough.

  • Patent number: 8011017
Abstract: A neck-protective member for preventing chafe encountered when wearing a wetsuit is provided that fits snugly around the wearer's neck, with its lower edge under the edge of the neck opening in the wetsuit. The edge of the neck opening in the wetsuit bears against the protective member rather than the skin of the wearer's neck, preventing painful chafing that can be experienced around a wearer's neck upon prolonged wetsuit use. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, the neck-protective member of the invention comprises a generally conical neck portion, which fits around the wearer's neck, and a skirt portion, which fits over the wearer's shoulders, under the wetsuit. The neck portion may be formed of a single band-like member cut from a sheet of flat material, preferably “smoothskin” neoprene rubber material, oriented such that the smooth surface of the “smoothskin” neoprene rubber material is to the inside and contacts the wearer's neck.

  • Patent number: 7980916
Abstract: A motorized toy vehicle or Wall Racer that is capable of operating on vertical and inverted horizontal surfaces such as walls and ceilings, while being manufacturable at reasonable cost and operable on batteries having sufficient lifetime as to be enjoyable. One or more battery-powered fans draw air from around all or defined portions of the periphery of the chassis of the Wall Racer through a carefully-shaped duct, so that the air in the portion of the duct immediately adjacent the surface flows at high velocity and low pressure; the relatively greater pressure of the surrounding air urges the vehicle against the surface, allowing it to operate on vertical surfaces, such as walls, or inverted on horizontal surfaces, such as ceilings.

  • Patent number: 7928735
Abstract: Improvements both in the methods whereby existing techniques for determining the condition of a battery are communicated to a user (for example, to the owner of a private vehicle, or to the service manager of a fleet of vehicles), or the vehicle's operating system, and in the methods for evaluating the condition of the battery are disclosed. It has been discovered by the inventors that the difference in internal resistance of a fully charged battery as measured during charging and as measured after charging is greater for a battery in poor condition than for a new battery. The invention relates in part to instruments and corresponding methods for evaluating the condition of a battery utilizing this discovery.

  • Patent number: 7902828
Abstract: A method for evaluating the condition of a battery comprises coupling a first power transistor as or as part of a first external load in series with the battery, coupling a second power transistor as or as part of a second external load in series with the battery, and conducting each power transistor to draw a transient large current from the battery while sampling the voltage across the battery and voltage across the load, from which the internal resistance of the battery can be determined. The internal resistance of the battery can then be compared with a predetermined nominal value to issue a warning if the battery is weak. The invention enables, for example, a driver to correctly know the actual condition of an automobile battery in substantially real time while consuming a minimum amount of power.

  • Patent number: 7836823
Abstract: A tool for breaking and opening an egg comprises first and second complementary concave egg-receiving container members pivoted to one another at a first axis, and first and second concave egg-confining members each pivoted to one of the complementary concave egg-receiving container members at a respective axis parallel to the first axis. Egg-piercing points are formed on mating edges of the egg-receiving container members. In order to break and open an egg, the egg-receiving container members are first operated such that their mating edges are juxtaposed to one another, such that an egg-receiving cavity is formed therebetween. An egg is then placed in this cavity, and the egg-confining members are pivoted so as to confine the egg in the cavity. The tool and egg therein are then rapped sharply against a hard surface, such that the shell of the egg is pierced by the egg-piercing points, defining a separation line extending substantially circumferentially around the shell of the egg.

  • Patent number: 7820053
Abstract: A process for removing fine particles and particulates from water. The process includes mixing a magnetic ballast, flocculant and water to form magnetic floc, and agitating the magnetic floc in a flocculation zone. A portion of the magnetic floc is collected on a magnetic collector in the flocculation zone. Another portion of the magnetic floc is directed downstream to a setting zone where the magnetic floc is settled. The settled magnetic floc is returned upstream of the settling zone where the returned magnetic floc is recombined with other magnetic floc in the flocculation zone. Ultimately, all, or substantially all, of the magnetic floc is removed by one or more magnetic collectors disposed upstream of the settling zone.
