Patent number: 7940623Abstract: Methods and devices are described for writing to an optical record carrier, in which a mark representing recorded data is written in a phase-change layer of a record carrier by a sequence of radiation pulses. A rear heating pulse is introduced after a last write pulse and a front heating pulse is introduced before the first write pulse. The power level of the front heating pulse and the power level of the rear heating pulse may be dependent on the length of the mark to be recorded and on properties of the record carrier. The method results in a reduced jitter of the marks written, especially when writing at high recording speeds.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2000Date of Patent: May 10, 2011Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventors: Martijn Jeroen Dekker, Hendrikus Bernardus Van Den Brink

Patent number: 7496017Abstract: A device for recording information writes marks in a track on a record carrier of a re-writable type. The device records the information according to a predefined recording format like DVD for constituting a recording area containing user data preceded by a lead-in zone. The device has a formatting unit (36) for formatting the record carrier. First it is detected if the record carrier has been recorded before. If so, a size is determined of a pre-existing contiguously written area that extends from the beginning of the recording area. The formatting includes writing data on the record carrier indicating that the recording area does not contain user data. Formatting status information is provided on the record carrier indicating the size of the pre-existing contiguously written area.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2004Date of Patent: February 24, 2009Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventor: Robert Albertus Brondijk

Patent number: 7492677Abstract: A method for reading data from a track (3) of a data carrier (2) comprises the following steps. During reading, a tracking quality parameter (Q) is determined, relating to a track portion (3Px) of the data carrier from which the data is being read. The tracking quality parameter is stored in a tracking performance memory (30) in relation to the corresponding track portion (3Px). If a jump back to a previously read track portion appears to be necessary, said tracking performance memory (30) is consulted to determine a target track portion (3P(x-n)) having a sufficient value of the tracking quality parameter (Q); then, a jump back (JB) to the target track portion (3P(x-n)) thus determined is performed.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 2004Date of Patent: February 17, 2009Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventors: Anthonius Petrus Gerardus Emanuel Janssen, Jacobus Maarten Den Hollander

Patent number: 7489448Abstract: An optical scanning device provides a radiation source (2,200), a collimator lens (4,40), an objective (7,90) for converting a beam (5,30?) to a scanning spot at the position of an information layer (101) of a record carrier (1,100). The device also includes an electrowetting cell (6). The electrowetting cell (6) acts such that a beam (5,30?) enters the objective (7,90) at a predetermined height of an entrance pupil of the objective (7,90) independent of the position of the objective (7,90) and that the beam (5,30?) forms a predetermined angle at the entrance pupil of the objective (7,90) with the optical axis (8). In this way the rim intensity may be kept constant over the entrance pupil of the objective (7,90).Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2005Date of Patent: February 10, 2009Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventors: Bernardus Hendrikus Wilhelmus Hendriks, Johannes Joseph Hubertina Barbara Schleipen, Stein Kuiper

Patent number: 7487306Abstract: A device for recording information records blocks, having continuous logical addresses on a record carrier at corresponding physical addresses, translates logical addresses into physical addresses in dependence of defect management information. The, defect management information includes assignment information indicative of assignment of physical addresses in first parts of the track to at least one user data area, assignment of physical addresses in second parts of the track to defect management areas, and assignment of the defect management information to the defect management areas. A data type of recorded information is detected, such as the type being streaming for real-time data like digitally encoded video, or non-streaming for random data like computer data files. The device reassigns defect management area for changing the assignment information in dependence of the data type. For example, a contiguous defect management layout is converted into a distributed layout.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2004Date of Patent: February 3, 2009Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventors: Johannis Friso Rendert Blacquiere, Pope Ijtsma, Dirk Hamelinck
