    Abstract: A paperboard tray and unitary blank for forming it. Two of the tray blanks may be joined in tandem to form, after erection, a clamshell type carton. The tray is provided with cooperating latching tongues and latching slits to maintain it erected. The specific form of the latching tongues and slits enables the tray sides to tilt outwardly after initial tongue and slit engagement and thus permit stacking. The use of the tongue and slit of this invention also permits tray formation without the need of adhesives, thus permitting safe use of the tray or clamshell carton in serving food, as at the retail level.

    Abstract: A paperboard partition having particular utility as a partition for spacing and supporting items in a paper bag or any suitable holder is formed from a unitary blank of paperboard. The blank is die cut and provided with a plurality of fold lines. The die cuts define a plurality of locking tabs and also define apertures for receiving the locking tabs when the partition is erected. Two of the panels defined by the fold lines and die cuts are each provided with a spot of glue or other adhesive. Upon initial folding of the blank those panels, termed adhesive panels, which have been provided with glue spots, are attached to corresponding panels. The partition is formed in such a manner that it is collapsed to flat configuration for shipment and/or storage. For use, the user erects the folded partition by unfolding, i.e., spreading several of the panels apart from each other, with the partition then being placed into a paper bag or other holder.

    Abstract: A tube type carton formed from a unitary blank of paperboard and having at each end closure panels defined by a pair of opposed dust flaps and opposed major and minor closure flaps. The major flaps and two opposite side wall panels of the four side panels are trapezoidal. The remaining two opposite side wall panels are square but of different size. A pair of rectangular interior tucking panels joins one edge of the smaller square side wall panel to the shortest edge of one of the two opposite trapezoidal side wall panels, these interior panels being tucked into the interior of the carton. By virtue of the tucking, the cross-section of the tube is changed from rectangular to trapezoidal. The fully erected configuration of the carton is that of a truncated, right, four-sided, rectangular pyramid.

    Abstract: A paperboard carton and plastic pour spout fitment construction for cartons adapted to carry powdered or granular material, particularly foodstuffs. A side wall of the carton is provided with a precut opening to receive the separate fitment. The periphery of the sides of the pour spout bottom wall must be broken from the surrounding fitment by the consumer upon initial use, to permit the spout to pivot for dispensing. The spout is thus held against accidental opening during shipping and handling prior to use, and further, such breaking is automatically tamper evident. The fitment is attached to a side wall of the carton by use of an adhesive or by a plurality of rivet stakes integral with the spout. The rivet stakes are received in complementary punctures bordering the precut opening. The use of plastic for the pour spout fitment insures against metal particles contaminating the contents of the carton.

    Abstract: A corrugated paperboard carton for carrying a plurality of cans such as soft drink cans. The carton is formed from a unitary blank which is folded and glued, the upper panel of the erected carton provided with precut lines to form a handle opening for the insertion of the fingers of a purchaser, one of the precut lines being in the form of a (longitudinal) half ellipse. The handle region of the carton is provided with flex lines to assist in uniform distribution of stress and thereby minimize high stress concentrations. The handle arrangement is also such that one or more of the cans in the carton assist in distributing stresses within the paperboard when the carton is carried. In a second embodiment of the invention, the handle opening is a complete, open ellipse, the narrow ends of the ellipse extending into the carton side walls. According to a third embodiment, a pair of partially elliptical flaps partially cover an elliptical handle opening and are foldable about respective elliptical fold lines.

    Abstract: A paperboard carton in the form of a rectangular parallelpiped and formed by gluing and folding a scored, one-piece paperboard blank. The top panel or wall of the carton carries a series of perforated/cut lines which define a finger insertable carrying handle upon pushing inwardly by the user. A pair of thumb holes is provided on the top carton panel with each hole equidistantly spaced from the handle recess in the top panel. The carton may be carried by inserting a thumb in one of the thumb holes and the remaining fingers in the handle, thereby defining two lifting and carrying areas for the convenience of the user. The carton is particularly useful as a container for cans. In a modification, strain-relieving cuts are provided in the side walls, these cuts intersecting curved portions of finger perforated lines in the top panel.

The bottom of the carton is square, with each of two opposite sidewalls having spaced apart, coplanar ears, each of the latter being semicircular. The ends of these latter walls carry hooks and also handle forming panels, the hooks being each engaged with a respective latching flap positioned between respective pairs of ears.

    Abstract: A recloseable lid construction for a paperboard container. The lid is a separate sheet and carries two radially spaced microcuts near its outer periphery. The radially outermost peripheral portion of the lid is bent upwardly and is sandwiched by an inwardly folded strip, the latter integral with the upper vertical side wall of the container. The inwardly folded strip carries a cutout which is aligned with an upwardly extending opening tab integral with the lid. Upon opening, the tab is pulled and separated from the radially outermost lid portion, and the two microcuts act to rip the paperboard and form a ledge around the dispensing opening. The lower portion of the inwardly folded strip is radially inwardly flared to define a snap reclosure. At least one of the microcuts in is filled and caulked with a barrier layer material, the barrier layer material also, preferably, covering the entire lid surface having the caulked microcut.

    Abstract: A pour spout seal construction for a gable top, thermoplastic coated type paperboard carton for packaging liquids. To permit easy unfolding of the folded pour spout within the top of the sealed carton by the consumer, the prior art has used adhesives to reduce the strength of the seal between the spout interior surfaces which are in surface contact with portions of the roof panels. In this invention, the opening action is different. Upon initial opening of the carton and subsequent unfolding of the pour spout, adhesive coating layers on the pour spout (located in positions homologous to the prior art adhesive coating layers) separate from the thermoplastic coating on the pour spout, instead of adhesive layers separating from themselves. Alternatively, the adhesive coating layers on the gable roof panels separate from the thermoplastic coating on the gable roof panels. In either case, the action is such that the adhesive coating layers stick to themselves upon pour spout unfolding.

    Abstract: An ovenable food tray for cooking foodstuffs, such as frozen foodstuffs, in an oven of either the microwave or conventional type. The tray is formed from a flat, unitary laminate blank by deforming the blank in any conventional male and female die apparatus under pressure and heat. The laminate includes a food contacting PET bi-axially oriented film coating adhered to a paperboard base stock by means of a crosslinkable adhesive. The use of such a coating and such an adhesive formulation permits use of the tray in oven temperatures to about 400 degrees F. without delamination of the coating from the paperboard or cracking of the coating.
