Abstract: Hydroxyaryldialkyl sulfonium halides having the structural formula ##STR1## wherein R is a normal alkyl group having 10 to 20 carbon atoms, R' is hydrogen or methyl, and X is bromine or chlorine, provided that when R' is hydrogen, the hydroxyl group is in the ortho, meta or para position with respect to the sulfur atom, and provided that when R' is methyl, the hydroxyl group is in the para position with respect to the sulfur atom. The compounds are useful as germicidal agents, especially against gram positive bacteria, in germicidal compositions and in detergent formulations.
Abstract: A fraction of mango kernel fat is obtained which is substantially free from glycerides containing more than one unsaturated fatty acid moiety and is suitable for use in confectionery compositions, particularly as a replacement fat for cocoabutter. The fat is preferably obtained by fractional crystallization from inert organic solvents, particularly acetone.

Abstract: Manganese ion-derived discolorations are removed from hard surfaces by the use of either dihydroxy maleic acid, dihydroxy tartaric acid, their alkali metal salts, or mixtures thereof. The non-toxicity and non-corrosivity of the disclosed compounds make them particularly suitable for household applications.
Abstract: The invention relates to fatty foodstuffs, particularly anhydrous frying fats containing phosphatides, proteinaceous material, preferably whey and/or skim milk powder and an ammonium salt, preferably ammonium adipate, for improving its browning characteristics upon frying. The fatty foodstuff preferably further comprises citric acid or a citrate and calcium salts of lactic and glutamic acid for improving the flavor of gravy prepared from such fatty foodstuffs.
Abstract: A device for the purification of water and methods for the use thereof are disclosed. The device comprises a closed container substantially porous to water, a purification agent contained therein and an ingredient dispersed in the purification agent for the purpose of inhibiting fine particles of the agent from escaping the container when the device is immersed in water. The disclosed inhibitory ingredients include certain modified starches, wood flour and aluminium lanolate soap. The device is especially useful in removing incipient impurities from drinking water that can elude customary water treatment and render drinking water organoleptically unsatisfactory.
Abstract: Detergent compositions are prepared containing a carboxymethyloxysuccinate salt detergency builder by spray drying a slurry containing dispersed carboxymethyloxysuccinate salt and detergent compound, to which slurry an alkali metal silicate is added after the addition of the carboxymethyloxysuccinate salt, with the slurry water content being maintained at not less than 40% of the final slurry formulation and a slurry temperature of not less than 76.degree. C. This decreases the formation of insoluble lumps in the slurry and gives improved slurry viscosity control.
