Abstract: A composition for making flexible articles includes a hydraulic component of at least 50 weight % fly ash, a water-soluble, film-forming polymer and water. Articles are made from this composition by making a slurry of the components, forming the article and allowing it to set.
Abstract: The disclosed invention consists of an improved gypsum based, cellulosic containing board and method for applying a resin to an untreated board at a spray station where pMDI resin is sprayed onto the front and back side of the board. A resin distribution system is used to supply the spray nozzles with pMDI. Optionally, a second spray station is included, if desired, to add additional pMDI resin over the surface of the board to achieve complete coverage. The improvement is an increased water resistance and flexural strength.
Abstract: A method for providing a smoothly mixed slurry to a web is provided which includes inserting calcined gypsum and water into a mixer (12), agitating the contents of the mixer (12) to form an aqueous dispersion of the calcined gysum, and passing the agitated contents from an outlet (20) of the mixer (12) into a slurry dispensing apparatus (22) including a flexible, resilient conduit (24). Additionally, the method includes the step of creating a back-pressure on the mixture in the slurry dispensing apparatus by constricting the conduit (24). The constricting of the conduit (24) is effected by a constrictor valve (28) located on the conduit (24).

Abstract: An improved process calcining a gypsum/cellulosic fiber slurry to produce a composite gypsum/cellulosic fiber product resides in adding a selected crystal modifier to the gypsum/cellulosic fiber slurry prior to the heating step to reduce the time necessary to carry out the calcination process, to reduce the temperature at which the calcination process is run or to increase the aspect ratio of the acicular calcium sulfate alpha hemihydrate crystals formed during the calcination process. Useful crystal modifiers include aluminum sulfate, aluminum chloride, chlorine, zinc sulfate, iron (III) sulfate, aluminum sulfate hexadecahydrate, iron (II) sulfate heptahydrate, iron (III) sulfate pentahydrate, zinc sulfate heptahydrate, copper sulfate pentahydrate, copper chloride dehydrate, manganese sulfate monohydrate and trisodium phosphate.
Abstract: A composition and method for treating a set gypsum-containing material are disclosed. The composition is formed from at least water at least one trimetaphosphate salt, at least one monobasic phosphate salt, and at least one acyclic polyphosphate salt having at least three phosphate units. The method comprises applying to a set gypsum material at least two of the following inorganic phosphates: at least one monobasic phosphate salt, at least one trimetaphosphate salt, and at least one acyclic polyphosphate salt having at least three phosphate units. The method can be for inhibiting re-calcination of a set gypsum containing material, and/or for enhancing the strength, surface hardness, paintability, abrasion resistance, and/or water erosion resistance of a set gypsum-containing material. Also disclosed is a method of making a set gypsum-containing material.

Abstract: There is provided a method for producing lignocellulosic composites. This method is useful in reducing the thickness swell of these composites on their exposure to water. This method also is useful in reducing the hot-press times required to make lignocellulosic composites. Furthermore, there is provided a method by which wax sizing may be used without the previously expected reduction in physical properties. Also, there is provided a method by which caul plate sticking may be reduced when hydrogen peroxide is used as a furnish add-on.
Abstract: There is provided a composition that is the product of mixing and reaction a resole, an alcoholate of an amino triazine, and aldehyde. This composition is useful as a thermosetting resin. This composition is useful as a curative for novolac resins. There is also provided a process for making this composition. In particular there is a process disclosed for making this composition in aqueous solution. Furthermore, curable novolac compositions, and processes for making these compositions, are disclosed and claimed.
