  • Patent number: 7706456
Abstract: A stream of modulation symbols from a zero symbol rate (ZSR) coding/modulation module and a stream of modulation symbols from another type of coding/modulation module are input into an interweaver module. The interweaver module mixes the two input streams when assigning modulation symbols to be communicated in a segment. If a ZSR modulation symbol is non-zero, the ZSR modulation symbol is allocated a transmission position. If the ZSR modulation symbol is a zero modulation symbol, the modulation symbol from the other coding/modulation module is allocated the transmission position. The non-zero modulation symbols from the ZSR module are higher in power than the non-zero modulation symbols from the other module, thus facilitating detection and recovery.

  • Patent number: 7668541
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for storing, manipulating, retrieving, and forwarding state, e.g., context and other information, used to support communications sessions with one or more end nodes, e.g., mobile devices, are described. Various features are directed to a mobile node controlling the transfer of state from a first access node to a second access node during a handoff operation thereby eliminating any need for state transfer messages to be transmitted between the second access node and the first access node during handoff. Other features of the invention are directed to the use of a core network node to store state information. State information stored in the core node can be accessed and used by access nodes in cases where a mobile node does not send a state transfer message during a handoff, e.g., because communication with the first access node is lost or because such messages are not supported.

  • Patent number: 7647408
Abstract: This application describes how Session Description Protocol (SDP) preconditions signaling can be enhanced to support lead role negotiation, precondition capability exchange, premature precondition attempts and concatenated preconditions processing. The application describes the use of send and receive tags in an SDP message for a given media line. In a given message, a success or failure tag may be associated with a send or receive tag in addition to an optional or mandatory condition indicator tag. A lead role indicator may also be associated with a send or receive tag to indicate a desired preference with regard to the sender or receiver taking the lead role. These additions lead to a greater chance of successful session set-up completion, reduce the number of signaling exchanges in general, and enable precondition attempts to be started earlier and to be executed in parallel.

  • Patent number: 7639728
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for generating and transmitting frequency division multiplexed signals are described. The methods are well suited for use where a device uses a small subset, M, of a larger set of N subcarrier frequencies at any given time. Each transmitted FDM signal is generated by combining a plurality of individual analog subcarrier signals whose frequency may change, e.g., be hopped as a function of time. Each generated analog subcarrier signal is amplified, e.g., power amplified, and filtered prior to being combined with other analog subcarrier signals. Filters are used to compensate for or correct signal distortions and/or reduce interference between subcarriers. Fixed frequency filters are used in an exemplary frequency hopping OFDM system. In another embodiment, the filters are programmable and change, e.g., in terms of center frequency, to match the selected subcarrier frequency as frequency hopping occurs. The bandwidth of the programmable filters may remain constant.

  • Patent number: 7617432
Abstract: High throughput parallel LDPC decoders are designed and implemented using hierarchical design and layout optimization. In a first level of hierarchy, the node processors are grouped on the LDPC decoder chip, physically co-locating the processing elements in a small area. In a second level of hierarchy, clusters, e.g., subsets, of the processing elements are grouped together and a pipeline stage including pipeline registers is introduced on the boundaries between clusters. Register to register path propagating signals are keep localized as much as possible. The switching fabric coupling the node processors with edge message memory is partitioned into separate switches. Each separate switch is split into combinational switching layers. Design hierarchies are created for each layer, localizing the area where the interconnect is dense and resulting in short interconnect paths thus limiting signal delays in routing.

  • Patent number: 7610225
Abstract: Utilization of resources used to provide a service, and/or costs associated with providing system resources for a service, are tracked in a system where the available resources vary depending on a variety of conditions including resource utilization by other users. The methods are well suited for systems such as mobile communications systems, where the amount of resources and/or costs to a system of providing a service are dynamic and can change on a relatively rapid time scale. Resource utilization is tracked on a per subscriber basis. Service charges can be determined as a function of both the amount of resources consumed and the amount of data delivered, with the amount of resources being used to deliver a fixed amount of data units varying as a function of environmental and/or other conditions. Service charges are sometimes determined as a function of the impact of providing the service to a first user on other system users.

  • Patent number: 7610024
Abstract: Transmit and/or receive diversity is achieved using multiple antennas. In some embodiments, a single transmitter chain within a wireless terminal is coupled over time to a plurality of transmit antennas. At any given time, a controllable switching module couples the single transmitter chain to one the plurality of transmit antennas. Over time, the switching module couples the output signals from the single transmitter chain to different transmit antennas. Switching decisions are based upon predetermined information, dwell information, and/or channel condition feedback information. Switching is performed on some dwell and/or channel estimation boundaries. In some OFDM embodiments, each of multiple transmitter chains is coupled respectively to a different transmit antenna. Information to be transmitted is mapped to a plurality of tones. Different subsets of tones are formed for and transmitted through different transmit chain/antenna sets simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 7574224
Abstract: A wireless terminal using OFDM signaling supporting both terrestrial and satellite base station connectivity operates using conventional access probe signaling in a first mode of operation to establish a timing synchronized wireless link with a terrestrial base station. In a second mode of operation, used to establish a timing synchronized wireless link with a satellite base station, a slightly modified access protocol is employed. The round trip signaling time and timing ambiguity between a wireless terminal and a satellite base station is substantially greater than with a terrestrial base station. The modified access protocol uses coding of access probe signals to uniquely identify a superslot index within a beaconslot. The modified protocol uses multiple access probes with different timing offsets to further resolve timing ambiguity and allows the satellite base station access monitoring interval to remain small in duration.

  • Patent number: 7567502
Abstract: More efficient utilization of available bandwidth is implemented in an OFDM wireless communication system. The partitions of bandwidth may be of different sizes and may be different from the original system design parameters. Basic system structure such as the number of tones used and the number of OFDM symbol times in a slot is maintained throughout the system. Bandwidth is varied by adjusting the inter-tone spacing or bandwidth associated with a single tone. As the inter-tone spacing is increased, the OFDM symbol transmission time is decreased following an inverse proportional relationship. A first base station transmitter transmits signals on a first number of tones distributed uniformly in a first frequency band, and a second base station transmitter transmits signals on a second number of tones distributed uniformly in a second frequency band which is wider than the first frequency band, the second number of tones being the same as the first number of tones.

  • Patent number: 7567791
Abstract: Wireless terminal for use with a multi-mode base station that supports a transmit standby mode and an active mode is described. Transmit standby mode of base station operation is a low power/low interference level of operation as compared to active mode. In transmit standby mode at least some of the synchronization signaling such as pilot tone signaling is reduced in power level and/or rate with respect to the active mode. In transmit standby mode, the base station has no active state registered wireless terminals being serviced but may have some sleep state registered wireless terminals being serviced. Mode transitions from active to transmit standby may be in response to: a detected period of inactivity, scheduling information, base station mode change signals, and/or detected wireless terminal state transition. Mode transitions from transmit standby to active may be in response to: scheduling information, access signals, wake-up signals from the wireless terminal, hand-off signals, etc.

  • Patent number: 7558572
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for indicating parameter change points with respect to multiple connections (wireless links) by transmitting a single message, e.g., over one of the connections, is described. A base station corresponding to at least one connection, considers the approximate timing relationship between the connections, selects one of the connections, selects an intended parameter switching point for that connection, determines a symbol time offset from the selected switching point such that the other intended switching points of other wireless links can be unambiguously interpreted by the wireless terminal from information indicating the offset with respect to the selected link, and communicates information indicating the offset and the wireless link to which said offset applies. A wireless terminal receives the information, identifies a time referenced with respect the timing structure of the identified wireless link and then determines individual parameter switching points for the other wireless links.

  • Patent number: 7558245
Abstract: A method and apparatus for joint time and frequency synchronization for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. A multitone pilot signal is sent in a designated OFDM symbol period. The receiver synchronizes to the pilot signal in a two-stage procedure. The first stage estimates the frequency offset coarsely with a frequency-domain correlation method and estimates the time offset with smoothed time-domain correlation. In a multipath channel, the smoothed time offset estimate is used to locate a cyclic prefix interval which captures the maximum total signal energy. The second stage improves the frequency estimate with a computationally efficient numerical optimization method.

  • Patent number: 7554977
Abstract: Frames including a packet boundary information field indicator and, optionally, packet boundary information field in addition to packet data are described. Methods and apparatus for generating and using such frames are also described. The packet boundary indicator indicates the presence or absence of at least one packet boundary information field in the frame. Frames with a payload that is fully occupied with data corresponding to a single packet do not include a packet boundary information field. The packet boundary information field indicates the location of a corresponding packet boundary and the type of boundary. One packet boundary information field is included in a frame for each boundary separating the data corresponding to different packets. By using packet boundary information fields to specify the location of packet boundaries, the need to parse an entire packet to identify the location of a packet boundary is avoided.

  • Patent number: 7552097
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for decoding codewords using message passing decoding techniques which are particularly well suited for use with low density parity check (LDPC) codes and long codewords are described. The described methods allow decoding graph structures which are largely comprised of multiple identical copies of a much smaller graph. Copies of the smaller graph are subject to a controlled permutation operation to create the larger graph structure. The same controlled permutations are directly implemented to support message passing between the replicated copies of the small graph. Messages corresponding to individual copies of the graph are stored in a memory and accessed in sets, one from each copy of the graph, using a SIMD read or write instruction. The graph permutation operation may be implemented by simply reordering messages, e.g.

  • Patent number: 7539475
Abstract: Special DC tone treatment in a wireless communications system, e.g., an OFDM system, is discussed. In the downlink, a wireless terminal receiver introduces self-interference at the DC tone from the RF/baseband conversion. A base station every so often does not transmit on the downlink DC tone while continuing to transmit on other downlink tones. Wireless terminals measure received signal on the downlink DC tone during the time of suspended DC tone transmission, estimate self-interference and apply a correction to other received downlink DC tones. In the uplink DC tone interference is a composite of the assigned wireless terminal transmitter's baseband/RF conversion self-interference and air link noise. During one symbol interval of an N symbol interval dwell, the uplink DC tone is reserved for a special modulation symbol, which is a predetermined function of the other N?1 modulation symbols.

  • Patent number: 7536192
Abstract: This invention describes how combined session and resource tracking in a mobile node (MN) and/or basestation in a dynamic network resource environment can be used to control reactions to resource shortages. The session that is to experience a resource shortage is detected either by the MN, or communicated to the MN where session signaling is used to modify the session according to MN and basestation policy/configuration. The basestation can alternatively modify the session itself with all the session peers, on behalf of the MN. The specific new reaction to resource shortages that is then enabled is to place the session on hold such that the resources are freed, but so that the session state is maintained in the peers. This is preferable to dropping the session, as is generally the case in dynamic environments, if the likely period of resource loss is short and the session modifications require less overhead than restarting the session when the resources return after dropping the session.

  • Patent number: 7477629
Abstract: Session signaling register message transmission methods and apparatus well suited for use in a communication system which supports mobile nodes capable of moving between domains and access nodes in a domain are described. Broadcasting of session signaling register messages is supported to reduce the number of registration messages which need to be transmitted between a mobile node and an access node. A paging and location server is used to reduce the number of session signaling register messages transmitted between domains. A visiting node registers with a paging and location server. The session signaling address of the paging and location server being used by a visiting mobile node is registered with the visiting node's home session signaling server. As the visiting node moves between access nodes in the visited domain the paging and location server it uses remains the same eliminating the need to update the home session signaling servers.
