  • Patent number: 7078905
Abstract: A system and method for locating a horizontal bore below a ground surface includes a transmitting source configured to radiate from the bore a dipole magnetic field aligned with the bore. A receiver is located remote from the transmitting source and has a first coil and a second coil. Each coil defines an axis, wherein the axes of the first coil and the second coil are orthogonal to each other. A measurement device is in communication with the coils and configured to measure the phase of signals induced on the coils by the magnetic field when the axis of the first coil is horizontally perpendicular to the axis of the magnetic field and the axis of the second coil is vertically perpendicular to the axis of the magnetic field. The measurement device is also configured to determine the lateral position of the transmitting source relative to the coils responsively to the phase of the signals on the first coil and the second coil.

  • Patent number: 7045746
Abstract: As part of a system for processing a workpiece by applying a controlled heat to the workpiece, a heating arrangement includes an array of spaced apart heating elements for use in a confronting relationship with the workpiece to subject the workpiece to a direct radiation that is produced. A radiation shield includes a plurality of members supported for movement between (i) retracted positions, which allow the direct radiation to reach the workpiece, and (ii) extended positions, in which the plurality of members cooperate in way which serves to at least partially block the direct radiation from reaching the workpiece and to absorb radiation emitted and reflected by the workpiece and thereby achieve greater control of the time-temperature profile than previously obtainable. At least certain ones of the members move between adjacent ones of the heating elements in moving those certain members between the retracted and extended positions. Tubular, curved and plate-like member configurations can be used.

  • Patent number: 7019704
Abstract: An antenna arrangement is described in which a pair of at least generally planar opposing antenna arms each support a first high frequency antenna current responsive to an input. Each arm includes a peripheral outline for confining the first high frequency current to a pair of first and second dominant paths, that are defined by the peripheral outline, in a spaced apart relationship across each of the opposing antenna arms so as to define an isolated area between the first and second paths. A configuration is located in this area of at least one of the antenna arms for producing an additional high frequency current responsive to the input. The additional high frequency current cooperates with the first high frequency antenna current to produce an overall antenna response. In one feature, the opposing antenna arms are bow arms which cooperate to define an overall bow-tie configuration as the peripheral outline.

  • Patent number: 6993981
Abstract: Tension monitoring is described using a sensor which may exhibit an offset for which compensation may be provided to produce a zero voltage amplified output or to increase dynamic range. An arrangement determines whether a power reset is responsive to a battery bounce such that an initially-measured system start-up parameter can be retained. The start-up parameter is automatically saved at start-up if the power reset is responsive to a start-up from a shut-down condition. The start-up parameter may be a zero tension amplified output responsive to the sensor offset at zero tension. Protection of a tension data set is provided such that no opportunity for altering the data set is presented prior to transfer of the data set. A housing configuration forms part of an electrical power circuit for providing electrical power to an electronics package from a battery.

  • Patent number: 6975119
Abstract: Tracking a boring tool is performed within an underground region using a locating signal. The boring tool is moved through the ground during a series of distance movements such that potential movement of the boring tool during any one of the distance movements is less than a maximum movement value. A current positional relationship is determined for a current one of the distance movements based on: a last-determined positional relationship established for an immediately preceding one of the distance movements, certain orientation parameters, the maximum movement value and the determined signal strength of the locating signal in the current positional relationship. Target coordinates are accepted and a target position, based on the target coordinates, is included as part of the current positional relationship. The position of the target is unconstrained with respect to system geometry. Steering command features are provided along with steering warnings.

  • Patent number: 6973535
Abstract: An electromechanical data storage arrangement is interfaced with a host. The interface may include a conductor that carries read and write gate signals. Another conductor carries both a servo sync mark and an error signal. The storage arrangement includes an external serial interface connected to a host serial interface applying a device identification to a portion of serial control-related data that travels over the interface. • Patent number: 6954073
Abstract: An inground device and a portable locator are provided as well as an information generating arrangement for generating a set of positional information characterizing an inground position of the inground device relative to the portable locator. A transmitter transmits a dipole field from the inground device and a receiver senses the dipole field at a series of spaced-apart reference points along a reference path which reference points are associated one-for-one with a series of spaced-apart measuring locations of the inground device, so that each reference point on the reference path is specifically determined by an associated one of the measuring locations of the portable device. The set of positional information corresponds to each of the reference points and is used to establish an actual path taken by the inground device and containing the measurement locations. • Patent number: 6927741
Abstract: Location determination is performed using a transmitter including an elongated generally planar loop antenna defining an elongation axis. The elongation axis is positioned along at least a portion of a path. A magnetic field is then generated which approximates a dipole field. Certain characteristics of the magnetic field are then determined at a receiving position radially displaced from the antenna elongation axis. Using the determined certain characteristics, at least one orientation parameter is established which characterizes a positional relationship between the receiving position and the antenna on the path. The magnetic field may be transmitted as a monotone single phase signal. The orientation parameter may be a radial offset and/or an angular orientation between the receiving position and the antenna on the path. The antenna of the transmitter may be inserted into a first borehole to transmit the magnetic field to a receiver inserted into a second borehole.
