  • Patent number: 6115750
Abstract: A requesting terminal includes an interface that allows a user to select whether data downloaded from a network (such as the Internet) is transmitted to the requesting terminal via a high-speed link, such as a satellite link, or a lower speed link, such as a terrestrial link. Preferably, the terrestrial link (which may comprise a conventional dial-up Internet connection) is a two-way link, wherein the requesting terminal transmits data requests to the network via the terrestrial link. The data requests generated by the requesting terminal are modified to designate whether the requested data should be downloaded from the network via the terrestrial link or the satellite link. The terrestrial link may also be automatically selected for certain applications.

  • Patent number: 6111358
Abstract: A traveling wave tube incorporates a collector having a plurality of collector electrodes, one or more of which is operated at a potential below that of the cathode so as to collect electrons having associated energies greater than the cathode potential (E.sub.K), and thereby act as a high impedance current source. The current from the collector electrode operated below the cathode potential (E.sub.K) is converted by a power converter to an alternating current signal that can be either magnetically coupled to the high voltage transformer (T.sub.1) of the traveling wave tube power supply, or coupled to an external load with a transformer (T.sub.2), thereby improving the operating efficiency of the traveling wave tube system.

  • Patent number: 6109105
Abstract: Various structures for cantilever beam tunneling rate gyro devices formed on a single substrate are disclosed. A cantilever electrode having a plurality of portions extending from the substrate with one end of the cantilever is suspended above the substrate at a distance from a tunneling electrode so that a tunneling current flows through the cantilever and tunneling electrode in response to an applied bias voltage. The cantilever and tunneling electrodes form a circuit that produces an output signal. A force applied to the sensor urges the cantilever electrode to deflect relative to the tunneling electrode to modulate the output signal. The output signal is a control voltage that is applied between the cantilever electrode and a control electrode to maintain a constant tunneling current. In the preferred embodiment, two cantilever portions extend from the wafer surface forming a Y-shape. In a further embodiment, a strap is fabricated on the cantilever electrode.

  • Patent number: 6101104
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for controlling the operation of a synchronous rectifier used in power conversion circuitry. The disclosed method and apparatus senses the voltage across the synchronous rectifier, and turns the synchronous rectifier OFF when the voltage across the rectifier is about to change direction. Preferably, the synchronous rectifier is commanded OFF at the approximate instant when the voltage across the rectifier reaches approximately zero, which also corresponds to a current of approximately zero. Accordingly, currents are prevented from flowing in the reverse direction in the synchronous rectifier. This results in approximately zero voltage and zero current switching when the rectifier is turned OFF, thereby minimizing switching losses.

  • Patent number: 6101545
Abstract: An message handling system for handling the delivery of critical and time critical messages for a near-real-time or real-time simulation environment. A message delivery type (38) accompanies each message (34) to designate whether the message (34) is delivery critical (46) or time critical (42). A message receiver (50) receives the message (34). A message delivery selector (58) selects a protocol based on the message delivery type (38) as determined by a message type determinator (54). The selected protocol conforms to a message format which has a common header and a message component. The message (34) is then sent to the intended recipient computer via the selected protocol.

  • Patent number: 6079101
Abstract: A rocket engine is prepared by fabricating a combustion chamber having an annular wall as a single piece of material. The wall has a first axial region with a first inner diameter, a second axial region with a second inner diameter greater than the first inner diameter, and an inner wall step transition between the first axial region and the second axial region. • Patent number: 6080836
Abstract: A method is provided for preparing the surface of a cyanate ester resin composite for metal plating. More particularly, a layer consisting essentially of cyanate ester resin is applied to the surface of the composite. Thereafter, the surface of the resin layer is etched, preferably by treatment with an etching solution containing either a quaternary ammonium hydroxide or a primary amine. Upon completion of the etching process, the cyanate ester resin layer may be successfully plated with metal. The method of the invention operates to improve adhesion between the cyanate ester resin composite and a subsequently-plated metal by providing the composite with a homogenous distribution of mechanical anchoring sites for a subsequently-plated metal, such that uniformity of adhesion is achieved.

  • Patent number: 6078958
Abstract: In a predictive manner, bandwidth requirements for each pre-compressed information frame are sent to a concentrator so that the pre-compressed information and other information is efficiently concentrated without cropping any information. Specifically, the bandwidth requirement for each one of multiple data frames is obtained and stored with the information data frames. The multiple data frames are concentrated with additional data into one data stream, and concentration is controlled with the aggregate bandwidth requirement of the bandwidth requirements for each one of the multiple data frames. A processor with an information data input, a processed data output and a rate data output for each frame of the processed data output is coupled to a storage device. A concentrator operatively connects to the storage device. The concentrator is capable of receiving at least a first and second frame of information data and has a concentrated output.
