  • Patent number: 5180838
Abstract: A method is provided herein for controlling insects which are harmful to agriculture and forestry and which are also harmful both to humans and to domestic animals. The method involves the steps of applying to a locus infested with such insects, a composition comprising a carrier and a biocidal-amount of a specifically-recited phototoxic, naturally-occurring thiophene, acetylene, or a synthetic, structurally-related derivative, analogue or acetylenic compound. Then, that composition, while at that locus, is subjected to UV radiation in the range about 300 nm to about 400 nm, for a sufficient time to impart, to such phototoxic naturally-occurring thiophene, acetylene, or synthetic, structurally-related derivative, analogue or acetylenic compound the desired insect control activity. Certain of these phototoxic naturally-occurring thiophenes, or acetylenes or synthetic, structurally-related compounds are also novel and provide novel insect control compositions.

  • Patent number: 5175199
Abstract: High transparency silica-titania glass beads are characterized by a linear transmittance of at least 70% as measured at a wavelength of 900 nm to 600 nm by a specific measurement method. Such beads are prepared by hydrolyzing and polycondensing a silicon alkoxide and a titanium alkoxide to form a silica-titania sol, converting the sol into a dry gel, and then grinding the gel followed by heating or heating the gel followed by grinding. A light transmisson epoxy resin composition comprising a curable epoxy resin, a curing agent, and the high tranparency silica-titania glass beads has crack resistance and high transparency in cured state. • Patent number: 5160707
Abstract: After aerating sewage sludge in a composting process, a stream of process air is treated to remove odors therefrom by injecting into the airstream an atomized mixture of dilute sulfuric acid and dilute surfactant to remove ammonia and odorous organic compounds therefrom. The airstream is then oxidized with bleach to remove sulfides and treated with a hydrogen peroxide solution to remove chlorine introduced by the bleach while maintaining the oxidation reaction. A dilution fan is used to further dilute the scrubbed airstream as the airstream is exhausted to the atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 5158652
Abstract: For the separation of tert. butyl ethyl ether from mixtures with ethanol, there are provided two distillation stages, the first being carried out at a pressure p.sub.1 equal to or higher than 1 bar, the second at a pressure p.sub.2 below p.sub.1 by a value .DELTA.p or 0.5 to 12 bars, p.sub.2 then being 0.5 to 10 bars. The second column distillate is partly supplied as reflux to the head of the second column and is in part recycled to the head of the first column. The purified TBEE is collected at the bottom of the first column and the purified ethanol at the bottom of the second column. This separation process can be integrated into a TBEE production unit comprising etherification by ethanol of the isobutylene contained in a C.sub.4 fraction from a catalytic cracking or steam cracking stage. The ethanol separated from the TBEE is then recycled to the etherification zone.
