Patent number: 4063631Abstract: An adjustable paper guide for a typewriter having a paper chute defined by a paper table and an erasure table spaced therefrom. The paper guide includes a sleeve member and a yieldable guide member. The sleeve member includes a guiding surface that extends upward from the top surface of the erasure table and the yieldable guide member includes a guiding surface that extends from the erasure table to engage the paper table. The guiding surfaces guide an edge of a sheet of paper during paper insertion and during paper realignment. The paper table includes a plurality of gripping rollers for feeding paper whereby releasing the contact of the gripping rollers on the paper also releases the paper table. The erasure table is pivotally supported for movement from a closed position to an open position. The yieldable guide member remains engaged with the paper table irrespective of the positions of the paper table and/or erasure table.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1976Date of Patent: December 20, 1977Assignee: SCM CorporationInventors: Robert M. Patent number: 3991874Abstract: A method and mechanism for automatically performing a typewriter function such as backspacing a carriage where the backspace mechanism is actuated upon removal of an insertable and removable ribbon cartridge. Particularly adaptable to correcting typing errors, the present invention will automate the final backspacing operation that is necessary before the correct character is typed and normal typing can be continued. A modified ribbon cartridge containing error correction ribbon carries at least one abutment that engages a backspace coupled actuating mechanism upon removal of the ribbon cartridge. Therefore, automatic backspacing of the typewriter carriage occurs after a modified ribbon cartridge is inserted into the typewriter to perform an error correction operation simply by removing the error correction ribbon cartridge.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1975Date of Patent: November 16, 1976Assignee: SCM CorporationInventor: Stanley J. Patent number: 3987885Abstract: A method and mechanism for automatic actuation of single and repeat typewriter functions such as backspacing upon the insertion and removal of a ribbon cartridge. The ribbon cartridge, carrying a bidirectional camming abutment having a pair of converging cam surfaces is inserted into the typewriter, whereupon a first cam surface engages a backspace coupled cam lever within the typewriter, thereby actuating a typewriter backspace function. The cam lever includes a pair of convergingly directed cam surfaces joined by a dwell surface. As the cartridge camming abutment contacts the dwell surface, it actuates a repeat backspace function until the camming abutment passes beyond the dwell surface of the cam lever. The camming abutment includes a second cam surface that engages a second cam surface disposed on the cam lever to actuate a backspace function upon removal of the ribbon cartridge.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1975Date of Patent: October 26, 1976Assignee: SCM CorporationInventor: Herrick R. Diamond

Patent number: 3981385Abstract: An interposer in a typing machine key action is supported by an arcuate spring and a shelf. When a key lever bears against the arcuate spring to release the interposer from the shelf, the arcuate spring snaps the interposer against a pawl that engages a power roll to initiate a typing operation. Potential energy is restored to the arcuate spring as the key lever lifts the interposer back to rest position. The arcuate spring serves as a support and frictionless pivot for the interposer and biases the interposer against the shelf while providing energy to impel the interposer against the pawl.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1974Date of Patent: September 21, 1976Assignee: SCM CorporationInventors: Hans W. Mueller, Richard E. Shattuck

Patent number: 3977510Abstract: A method and mechanism for automatically performing typewriter functions such as backspacing and disabling the escapement mechanism of a typewriter. A ribbon cartridge carrying actuating abutments is inserted into the typewriter whereupon the abutments engage a mechanism to actuate a selected function as for example the backspace mechanism and also engage another mechanism to disable the escapement mechanism. Particularly adaptable to correcting typing errors, the present invention will minimize the manipulations now necessary to perform an error correcting operation. Having typed an erroneous character, the operator simply inserts a ribbon cartridge containing the actuating abutments. One of the abutments contacts an actuating mechanism within the typewriter to backspace the carriage. The second abutment contacts a second actuating mechanism within the typewriter to disable the escapement mechanism to prevent carriage movement during error correction or until the ribbon cartridge is removed.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1975Date of Patent: August 31, 1976Assignee: SCM CorporationInventor: Edwin J. Patent number: 3976181Abstract: A gap is provided between two teeth on a power roll in a typing machine repeat key action, and a cam follower surface is provided on a repeat interposer. A repeat typing operation can be initiated only when the cam follower surface engages the gap. When the key action is not in a repeat position, a latch and a forked lever cooperate to hold the repeat interposer away from the power roll; when the key action is in the repeat position, the forked lever holds a single-action interposer out of the way. The gap prevents skipped and uneven repeat typing operations during high-speed operation by giving the actuator and the typebar enough time to settle into rest position.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1974Date of Patent: August 24, 1976Assignee: SCM CorporationInventors: Mueller Hans W., Howard F. Sherman, Richard E. Shattuck

Patent number: 3976182Abstract: A method and mechanism for automatically performing typewriter functions such as backspacing a carriage. The backspace mechanism is actuated by the insertion and removal of a ribbon cartridge that is placed on and guided by a ribbon cartridge platform and is especially suited for use in conjunction with the correction of erroneously typed characters. The ribbon cartridge carries a pair of cam surfaces that engage a pair of typewriter backspace coupled cam surfaces to actuate a backspace function upon insertion and again upon removal of the ribbon cartridge. Therefore, automatic multiple backspacing of the typewriter carriage occurs when performing an error correcting operation simply by inserting and removing a correction ribbon cartridge.Although a backspace function has been selected for purposes of demonstration, the hereafter disclosed embodiment may be utilized to actuate other typewriter functions upon the insertion and removal of the ribbon cartridge.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1975Date of Patent: August 24, 1976Assignee: SCM CorporationInventor: Samuel D.
