  • Patent number: 6420677
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of laser machining a cooling hole in a hollow gas turbine component, the cooling hole including a circular cross section metering hole and a diffuser with an opening which extends from a shape locus in the metering hole to a trapezoidal cross section opening by firing a series of laser pulses at an acute angle at the outer surface of the component toward the shape locus to create the diffuser opening, with the laser pulses penetrating the component outer surface up to but not substantially beyond the shape locus, then firing the laser through the shape locus and the inner surface of the component to create the metering hole having a circular cross section. Alternatively, the initial laser pulses are fired to create the central portion of the diffuser opening, then firing the laser to create the metering hole, followed by firing the laser along the peripheral portion of the diffuser opening.

  • Patent number: 6380512
Abstract: A process is provided for laser drilling to remove coating material obstructing cooling holes of a gas turbine component by utilizing a CNC component program which is preprogrammed with the general location of the cooling holes of a component to move a machine vision system and component relative to each other to each cooling hole location for a series of cooling holes, determining the actual location for each cooling hole and storing in the memory of the CNC or a data storage device the actual locations for the cooling holes for the series of cooling holes, followed by laser drilling based on the actual location of the cooling holes stored in the memory of the CNC or the data storage device to remove the coating material obstructing the cooling holes for the series of cooling holes. This process can be advantageously carried out to determine the actual location of the cooling holes either on a coated component or a component that has been prepared for coating.

  • Patent number: 6367380
Abstract: To minimize the presence of roll-to-roll nips in an inking system for a printing plate cylinder, an ink transfer belt transfers ink from an ink transfer roller, which receives ink from a supply, to the ink receiving elements on a printing plate cylinder. A plurality of guide rolls inside the loop of the ink transfer belt contact the drivable surface of that belt. A drive is connected with one of the guide rollers for driving it to rotate at a first velocity, which is the velocity of the ink transfer roll and of the printing plate cylinder. An ink distribution roller is disposed outside the loop of the belt in contact with the opposite, ink transfer surface of the belt and between the ink transfer roller and the printing plate cylinder. The ink distribution roller is driven to rotate at a different speed than the ink transfer belt and is also driven to vibrate or to oscillate axially for ink distribution on the ink transfer surface of the belt.

  • Patent number: 6261092
Abstract: Switching valve and a regenerative thermal oxidizer including the switching valve. The valve of the present invention exhibits excellent sealing characteristics and minimizes wear. The valve has a seal plate that defines two chambers, each chamber being a flow port that leads to one of two regenerative beds of the oxidizer. The valve also includes a switching flow distributor which provides alternate channeling of the inlet or outlet process gas to each half of the seal plate. The valve operates between two modes: a stationary mode and a valve movement mode. In the stationary mode, a tight gas seal is used to minimize or prevent process gas leakage. The gas seal also seals during valve movement.

  • Patent number: 6213758
Abstract: Control system and method for regulating the air/fuel mix of a burner for a web dryer or a regenerative or recuperative oxidizer, for example. Differential air pressure is monitored between the air chamber of the burner and the enclosure into which the burner fires (such as a flotation dryer or the combustion chamber of a regenerative thermal oxidizer). Fuel flow is monitored by a differential pressure measurement between the fuel chamber of the burner and the enclosure into which the burner fires. These measurements are compared to predetermined values, and the fuel flow and/or air flow to the burner is regulated accordingly.

  • Patent number: 6195909
Abstract: A combination infrared/air convection dryer or oven for travelling webs. A shutter assembly is provided between the infrared radiation source and the moving web in order to selectively expose the web to infrared radiation, and to create a sealed air chamber when in the closed position. Enhanced drying of the web and/or a coating on the web at high speed is achieved without a concomitant increase in dryer length. When the drying atmosphere has a high concentration of solvent, exposure of that atmosphere to the heating elements, which can cause explosions, is eliminated by actuation of the shutters. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, air bars are used to floatingly support the moving web to avoid contact of the web with dryer elements.

  • Patent number: 6178886
Abstract: In a can decorator, substituting one inking arrangement by another inking arrangement to facilitate reconfiguration of each inking arrangement with minimal down time while the other inking arrangement is inking cans being decorated. First and second inking arrangements are supported on and spaced 90° or 180° apart around a rotation axis of a plate, which is rotatable to bring each of the inking arrangements to a position radially inward of the can handling apparatus of the can decorator. Each inking arrangement is shiftable laterally inward on the plate away from the can handling apparatus when the plate is to be rotated and laterally shifted outwardly toward the can handling apparatus after the plate has been rotated and the new inking arrangement is positioned laterally inward of the can handling apparatus. In one alternate embodiment, the inking arrangements are on a plate that is reciprocated laterally to bring each inking arrangement in turn to the can handling apparatus.
