Patent number: 5986128Abstract: A method is described for making solution stable salts of iminodiacetic acid (IDA), useful as precursors in the manufacture of N-phosphonomethylglycine. Concentrated dialkali salts of IDA which are insoluble at temperatures below about 55.degree. C., such as the disodium salt (DSIDA) are acidified to monoalkali salts, such as monosodium IDA (MSIDA). The resulting salts are stable in solution, and may conveniently be stored or transported in solution without recourse to dilution, heating, or similar measures.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1996Date of Patent: November 16, 1999Assignee: Monsanto CompanyInventor: Lowell Richard Smith

Patent number: 5723049Abstract: A process is provided for selectively converting formaldehyde in an acidic organic waste aqueous stream in the most part to formose sugars rather than to alkali metal formate and methanol by reacting the stream with a strong alkali base to provide a pH of at least about 8.5 and heating the resulting basic solution to a temperature of at least about 80.degree. C. The formaldehyde is present in the waste stream in amounts between about 1000 ppm to 10,000 ppm.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1996Date of Patent: March 3, 1998Assignee: Monsanto CompanyInventor: Robert B. Weisenfeld

Patent number: 5716903Abstract: Solid N-phosphonomethylglycine or glyphosate acid is charged to a substantially closed system and then partially pre-dried as by continuously recirculating it through a hot air grinding/drying system. A cooled solution of ammonium hydroxide is then metered into and reacted with the partially dried glyphosate acid as it is being recirculated in a manner such that the moisture content of the reaction mass so formed is continuously decreased throughout the reaction. Following completion of the ammonium hydroxide addition, a powdered reaction mass/product having a moisture content of about 2 wt. % is formed. Significantly, at this stage, the ammonium glyphosate product is suitable for end use and it can be readily dissolved in water and immediately used as a herbicide or plant growth regulator. More importantly, however, this product is capable due to its highly sorptive character to be further formulated into a product exceptionally highly loaded with adjuvants and particularly surfactants.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 1997Date of Patent: February 10, 1998Assignee: Monsanto CompanyInventors: Richard M. Kramer, Thomas M. Day, Ralph E. Lindemann, Jr., Jane L. Gillespie

Patent number: 5703273Abstract: A process for preparing N-hydroxyalkylaminomethyl-phosphonic acid or salts thereof which comprises contacting an alkanolamine, formaldehyde and a trialkyl phosphite under suitable reaction conditions to produce a reaction mixture, and hydrolyzing the reaction mixture under neutral, acidic or basic conditions. In one embodiment, the N-hydroxyalkylaminomethylphosphonic acid or salts thereof is catalytically oxidized to produce an N-phosphonomethylaminocarboxylic acid or salts thereof.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 1996Date of Patent: December 30, 1997Assignee: Monsanto CompanyInventors: Michael K. Stern, Brian K. Cheng, Jerry R. Ebner, Dennis P. Riley
