Abstract: A method for selectively controlling allocation of one or more computing resources for a process. The method includes providing a user option to execute a process using local or remote computing resources and then executing the process using a selected option. A more specific method includes predetermining two or more allocation options; displaying a plurality of the predetermined allocation options, wherein each option indicates a different allocation of resources between at least one resource on a local computing system and at least one resource on a remote computing system, wherein the resources; determining, by using the local computing system, a function to be performed; accepting a signal from a user-input device to select one of the plurality of options in association with performing the function; allocating the resources in accordance with the selected option; and then using the selected resource allocation to accomplish a task.

Abstract: Methods and systems for dynamic spectrum access (DSA) in a wireless network are provided. A DSA-enabled device may sense spectrum use in a region and, based on the detected spectrum use, select one or more communication channels for use. The devices also may detect one or more other DSA-enabled devices with which they can form DSA networks. A DSA network may monitor spectrum use by cooperative and non-cooperative devices, to dynamically select one or more channels to use for communication while avoiding or reducing interference with other devices.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a video signal is displayed on a display screen in two or more resolutions. The video signal may be of a first resolution and the display screen may be set to a second resolution. In one embodiment, the video signal resolution is of a size that is greater than the size of the display screen resolution. The method includes displaying a first portion of the video signal in a first resolution in a first region of the display. A second portion of the video signal is then displayed in a second resolution in a second region of the display. The second resolution is a resolution that displays at least a portion of the video signal that would be off screen if the video signal is displayed in the first resolution. Accordingly, more of the signal can be displayed on the screen.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method of offering shipment options for selection is disclosed. The method includes receiving shipment-related criteria from a user and defining at one or more one shipment options that meet the shipment-related criteria. Environmental data corresponding to the shipment options are received and an corresponding environmental impacts, based on the environmental data, are determined. The method further includes displaying the shipment option with the corresponding environmental impact to the user and storing a selection by the user of one shipment option of the one or more shipment options.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating a tradable security includes confirming a vendor's compliance with predefined terms of a commercial transaction, such that a buyer is obligated to make a due payment. The method and apparatus further includes electronically rating a financial commitment relating to a receivable account for the commercial transaction. This receivable account is rated based on conditions and factors known to a system facilitating the commercial transaction. Based on the ability for the financial commitment to be rated, a financial exchange is operative to transfer entitlement rights to monies due under the receivable account where the terms for the transfer of the entitlement rights are based at least in part on the electronic rating. Thereby, receivable accounts to commercial transactions may be tradable by one or more investors as properly rated investment.

Abstract: A circuit and method are provided for detecting a power of a signal amplified in a power amplifier. A diode and a voltage bias source are used to shift a voltage of the signal taken at a base of an amplifying transistor of the power amplifier, to generate a positive signal. The positive signal is provided to a base input of an emitter follower exhibiting high input impedance to generate a power detector output which follows the positive signal.

Abstract: A single line docking station characteristic identifier is disclosed. In one embodiment, a portable computing device can include a dock detector circuit having an interface pin configured to be coupled to a docking station via a single line dock connection, where the dock detector circuit is configured to determine a characteristic of the docking station using a passive component in the docking station when the portable computing device is connected to the docking station via the single line dock connection. The dock detector circuit can include a resistor and a Schmitt trigger, while the passive component in the docking station can include a capacitor, for example.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for reducing dynamic EVM of an integrated circuit power amplifier (PA) used for RF communication. In a multistage PA, the largest amplification stage is biased with a high amplitude current pulse upon receipt of a Tx enable, before receipt of the RF signal data burst. The high amplitude current pulse causes a large portion of the total ICQ budget of the multistage PA to pass through the largest amplification stage causing the entire integrated circuit to rapidly approach steady-state operating conditions. A smoothing bias current is applied to the largest amplification stage after the pulse decays to compensate for transient bias current levels while standard bias circuitry is still approaching steady-state temperature.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided in which remote installed devices may be assigned various call-in times to contact a host controller. The host may schedule remote devices sequentially across multiple modems. Additional modems may be added to the system as more bandwidth is desired or required. The system may include additional, unscheduled bandwidth to account for calls made by devices outside of the assigned call times.

Abstract: A method enables power savings in an OLED display by reducing the size of the screen in an OLED display when the screen is not in use. For example, if the OLED display receives no input from the user for a predefined time period, the size of the screen is reduced in order to decrease the power consumption of the OLED display.

Abstract: A subprocessor is used to interface between subsystems and to reduce the amount of dedicated hardware used to implement the subsystems in a hand-held computer. The subprocessor includes basic processing system resources such as random-access memory (RAM), read-only memory (ROM), a processor, input/output (I/O) facilities, etc. Selected functions in subsystems are achieved by firmware instructions executed by the subprocessor as opposed to a main processor that is also used in the computer. This approach can provide efficiencies such as low power consumption, less required space, less routing overhead, easier transfer of inter-subsystem information, and other advantages.

Abstract: A system for resource sharing for document production. Available resources are determined for performing at least one document production task. The capacity of an available resource is determined. A task is selecting to send to the resource based at least partly on its availability. An identifier is associating with a set of task data, which can include document data and insertion data. The identifier can be used to track the progress and completion of the task. The task can be sent to the resource for processing. The completed task is received from the resource.

Abstract: A battery type detection approach is disclosed. In one embodiment, a method of detecting a battery type can include: receiving a signal from a battery module in a portable computing device; determining if the signal is in a first state for at least a first predetermined time before transitioning to a second state; determining if the signal transitions from the second state to the first state after a second predetermined time, and identifying the battery type in response thereto; and asserting an indication of the battery type when a third predetermined time period after the transition from the second state to the first state has occurred.

Abstract: A mail system including a tracking and reporting system that is adapted to integrate address information together with a unique code on at least one mailpiece, wherein the address information and code are linked, an in-process tracking and archiving system that is adapted to track the mailpiece as the address information and code are printed on the mailpiece and during a mailpiece insertion process to verify that the at least one mailpiece is inserted into a mailer and store an electronic copy of the mailpiece with the address information and code in an archive, an in-bound data capture of return mail system that scans the unique code and automatically links the mailpiece to account information stored in an account database and an postal address update and management system that is linked to a postal service database for verifying address information and correcting address errors.

For transaction i of the first set and transaction j of the second set, the method includes (a) determining an intersection set, (b) determining a union set; (c) computing a common linkage between transaction i and transaction j equal to the intersection set divided by the union set, and (d) incrementing index j and repeating steps (a)-(c). The method also includes (e) summing the common linkages between transaction i and the transactions of the second set, (f) normalizing the sum of the common linkages by a number of the second set, and (g) incrementing index i and repeating steps (a)-(f). The method further includes (h) summing the normalized common linkages and (i) normalizing the sum of the normalized common linkages by a number of the first set.

Abstract: Systems and methods for configuring a network of radios for dynamic spectrum access are described. A network radio can include hardware and/or software modules for detecting a radio environment and negotiating common communications channels with a plurality of other radios in the network. Network radio behavior can be defined by a plurality of predefined policies which are used in combination with the information about the radio environment to select common operating parameters.
