  • Patent number: 4275632
Abstract: A portable sawmill is provided in which a rigid straight channel support is placed on a floor or on the ground with one end slightly elevated. A pair of longitudinally spaced log supports are mounted in the channel piece at a distance corresponding to the length of a log to be placed thereon. A carriage with rollers is mounted to ride along the upturned edges of the channel piece and is adapted to roll by gravity from the elevated end of the channel piece to the lower end. The carriage includes a bandsaw driven by a low horse power motor and is equipped with a release mechanism for automatically disengaging the drive between the motor and the saw at the end of a cutting stroke. A jacking mechanism and adjustable shelves on the log supports are included for raising the log to a new height after each cut.

  • Patent number: 4275526
Abstract: A thermal-break window of extruded frame members interconnected to form a substantially rectangular frame for encasing a glass panel in which each of the frame members is formed with a channel along its axial length. This channel contains a material of low thermal conductivity hardened in situ and with a strip of the extruded material along the channel being removed, effectively separating thereby each of the extruded frame members into two sections along their entire lengths, representing exterior and interior sections, that remain joined only by the material of low thermal conductivity. Consequently, the exterior frame sections are and remain thermally insulated from the interior frame sections. Furthermore, certain of the extruded frame members are designed to snap-fit to one another, providing for ease and simplicity in assembly.

  • Patent number: 4266633
Abstract: A system is provided for indicating excessive wear of brake linings. The system is usable on vehicles such as automobiles, cars, trucks and busses as well as aircraft or other applications where it is desirable to detect excessive wear of brake linings during operation thereof. The system includes an acoustical signal generating device having an air inlet normally closed by the brake lining. When the lining wears away to a minimum safe thickness, the inlet is opened and ambient air flows into the generator to produce an acoustical signal. An acoustical receiver is positioned in spaced operative relation to the brake system and responds to the acoustical signal to provide a warning indication on the dashboard, for example, of the vehicle so that the operator of the vehicle will be alerted to the worn brake condition.

  • Patent number: 4267452
Abstract: A crystal detector array, particularly for a high resolution radioactivity distribution detection system, with a plurality of crystal assemblies that are disposed in rows and columns and define a sensing array. Each crystal assembly is provided with four sensing heads. Each head is a quadrant of the crystal assembly and is identified by a unique address location in the array. A plurality of detectors are superimposed on the sensing array. Certain ones of the detectors are in registration with one sensing head of four crystal assemblies in adjacent rows and columns. Radioactive events emitted from a subject under diagnosis activate selected ones of the sensing heads. Light signals generated by the activated heads are detected by the detectors and processed to provide a presentation of radioactivity distribution within the subject under diagnosis.

  • Patent number: 4265859
Abstract: A method and related apparatus are provided for producing on a semi-continuous basis polycrystalline silicon and melt replenishment for a crystal growth crucible. The silicon is deposited in low density form on the inner walls of a multi-walled reaction chamber by delivering gaseous HSiCL.sub.3, SiH.sub.4, or the like, and reducing gas if needed, through the chamber which is heated to the reaction temperature of the feed gas. After a certain amount of silicon has been produced, the chamber temperature is raised sufficiently to melt down the silicon which is then used to replenish a crystal growth crucible. The operations are then cyclically repeated. The apparatus includes a reaction chamber having a multi-walled configuration to maximize the interior surface area on which the silicon is deposited. A drain trap such as a U-shaped tube, or the like, is connected to the bottom of the reaction chamber and provided with heating elements.

  • Patent number: 4266220
Abstract: A self-calibrating obscuration smoke detector is provided along with a method for the operation thereof. A light source and a photodetector are mounted in spaced relation to one another with the output of the photodetector being a function of the amount of light sensed by the detector from the light source. The photodetector analog output is converted into digital signals by an A/D converter and digital signals are then delivered to a digital processor adapted to periodically calibrate the detector and to perform sampling operations between calibrations. Other sensing devices may be connected to the system with automatic self-calibrating capabilities with respect thereto.By using a pair of photodetecting cells directly visible to separate light sources or indirectly visible to a single source, a thermally stable system is provided where one cell provides a reference output for the other cell.

Abstract: A sighting device for enhancing a golfer's putting accuracy comprises an elongated vertical sight and a liquid level, which are provided by a compact hand-held, semitransparent or translucent casing with particular indicia and contained liquid. After the golfer moves to a position at which he views the ball and the cup along their shortest interjacent path, he views the position of the cup with respect to the ball in reference to the sight and plumbs the sight in reference to the level. A correct indication of how the ball will break thereby is provided.

  • Patent number: 4258928
Abstract: A precision positioning device with a pair of relatively movable plates defining a carriage for four relatively movable guides. A centering port having a rectangular profile is formed by the guides which are constrained for mutually coating movement on the plates. The relative positions of the movable plates define the geometric shape of the centering port and the relative locations of the guides determine the size of the centering port. A pedestal configured to carry the article to be centered is positioned at the center of the centering port. A driver momentarily moves the guides and opens the centering port for reception of the article. Bias elements urge the guides against the item for centering the article on the collet.

  • Patent number: 4249169
Abstract: A reflected light optical smoke detector includes a thermistor in series with a light emitting diode connected in parallel to a photo-resistive cell. Alarm circuitry is connected to the photocell having a voltage output which is a function of the presence or absence of smoke in an examination zone illuminated by the light source and visible to the cell. The circuit is temperature-compensated automatically by the thermistor since the thermistor will increase the current to the LED in the event of an increase of ambient temperature. The increase in the LED light output will compensate for the loss of photocell sensitivity in the event of an increase in temperature.

  • Patent number: 4237725
Abstract: Testing of rheological properties of a fluid is performed between a pair of members having cooperating faces, each characterized by minute, randomly interspersed land portions and cavity portions. The land portions of each face are planar and are disposed geometrically in a common plane. The cavity portions are irregular and are disposed in a network subordinate to the common plane. Testing involves the steps of placing a sample of the fluid between the cooperating faces, pressing the cooperating faces into flush contact with each other, and pulling the cooperating faces from each other. The force required for rupture of the fluid within itself, without first breaking its contact with the cooperating faces, is a function of the shear stress, yield point and other rheological properties of the fluid.
