  • Patent number: 6862920
Abstract: At least one parameter of at least one fluid in a pipe is measured using a spatial array of acoustic pressure sensors placed at predetermined axial locations along the pipe 12. The pressure sensors provide acoustic pressure signals, which are provided to a signal processing system that determines the speed of sound amix of the fluid (or mixture) in the pipe 12 using acoustic spatial array signal processing techniques. Numerous spatial array processing techniques may be employed to determine the speed of sound amix. The speed of sound amix is provided to another logic system that calculates the percent composition of the mixture, e.g., water fraction, or any other parameter of the mixture or fluid which is related to the sound speed amix. The signal processing system may also determine the Mach number Mx of the fluid. The acoustic pressure signals measured are lower frequency (and longer wavelength) signals than those used for ultrasonic flow meters, and thus are more tolerant to inhomogeneities in the flow.

  • Patent number: 6860330
Abstract: A choke valve assembly is disclosed for controlling the flow of fluid through a production tubing. The valve assembly includes a housing having a plurality of axially aligned apertures and a ported sleeve disposed in the housing. The ported sleeve has a plurality of rows of fluid ports. Each row of ports has at least one port in selective fluid communication with a respective aperture. In the full open position, each aperture is in fluid communication with a port from each row. To choke the flow, the ported sleeve is rotated relative to the housing to reduce the number of ports in fluid communication with the housing. To close the valve, axial force is applied to move the ported sleeve axially relative to the housing.

  • Patent number: 6851475
Abstract: The present invention provides methods and apparatus for cutting tubulars in a wellbore. In one aspect of the invention, a cutting tool having radially disposed rolling element cutters is provided for insertion into a wellbore to a predetermined depth where a tubular therearound will be cut into an upper and lower portion. The cutting tool is constructed and arranged to be rotated while the actuated cutters exert a force on the inside wall of the tubular, thereby severing the tubular therearound. In one aspect, the apparatus is run into the well on wireline which is capable of bearing the weight of the apparatus while supplying a source of electrical power to at least one downhole motor which operates at least one hydraulic pump. The hydraulic pump operates a slip assembly to fix the downhole apparatus within the wellbore prior to operation of the cutting tool. Thereafter, the pump operates a downhole motor to rotate the cutting tool while the cutters are actuated.

  • Patent number: 6852626
Abstract: In the film deposition method of the present invention, an organometallic fluid, which has an organic metal such as a copper diketonate as its main component, and which precipitates film deposition material through a pyrolytic decomposed reaction, is first prepared; and the organometallic fluid is then applied onto a semiconductor wafer at a certain temperature within the non-reactive range of the organic metal. Afterwards, the wafer is heated to a predetermined temperature, the organic metal within the organometallic fluid that is applied onto the wafer is pyrolytically decomposed, and film is formed on the wafer. With this method, since application is performed at a temperature within the non-reactive range of the organic metal, deposition of the film does not occur, allowing uniform and homogenous application to be performed. Also, since pyrolytic decomposition is performed separately in a later process, a stable reaction may be assured, so that a film of uniform thickness and quality may be deposited.

  • Patent number: 6853488
Abstract: The present invention provides a reflection-type improved optical circulator. The reflection-type optical circulator includes at least one birefringent plate for receiving at least one signal light ray from a first port; and a mirror optically coupled to the at least one birefringent plate, where the mirror and the at least one birefringent plate causes the at least one signal light ray to be folded back upon itself, where the at least one signal light ray is directed to a second port. The optical circulator in accordance with the present invention is a reflection-type optical circulator, in which the paths of throughgoing light rays are folded back upon themselves. This minimizes the number of required optical elements and the resultant device size by using each optical element two times for each light ray.

  • Patent number: 6850934
Abstract: Embodiments provide a method, article of manufacture, and apparatus for searching for information on a network of computers using a modified search query. The search query is modified using translation data. The translation data is any information having a predefined association with the search query content. In one aspect, the translation data comprises a location value and a demographic profile value. The location value, demographic profile value, and search content may include any number and types of characters, keywords, symbols, numerals, etc. Upon receiving a search query, a translation program takes step to locate any keywords within the search content, wherein the keywords indicate that translation data is available for modifying the search query. If the search content contains keywords, then steps are taken to modify the query. The modified query may then be executed by a search tool. In some embodiments, the search tool and the translating program are integrated.

  • Patent number: 6848511
Abstract: Aspects of the present invention provide apparatus and methods of releasing a plug. In one aspect, a plug and ball seat assembly for releasing a plug is disclosed. The assembly is selectively maintained in a housing using a mounting system. The plug and ball seat assembly includes a ball seat selectively connected to the plug. The mounting system is designed such that disengaging the ball seat from the plug also disengages the plug from the housing, thereby releasing the plug. In another aspect, a method of releasing a plug includes selectively connecting a ball seat to the plug and disposing the plug and ball seat assembly within a tubular. When the plug is ready for release, the ball seat is disconnected from the plug and allowed to move axially relative to the plug. In turn, the plug and ball seat assembly disconnects from the tubular and releases downhole.
