  • Patent number: 4559125
Abstract: Apparatus and method for evaporation arc stabilization including a target having a surface of material to be evaporated; circuitry for establishing an arc on the target surface for evaporating the target material, the arc being characterized by the presence of charged particles and a cathode spot which randomly migrates over the target surface; and a confinement ring contacting and surrounding the target surface, the ring being composed of a material such as boron nitride having (a) a secondary emission ratio less than one at the mean energies of the charged particles of the arc and (b) a surface energy less than that of the evaporated target material to thereby confine the cathode spot to the target surface. The confinement ring is employed as a cover for a permeable ring to prevent migration of the cathode spot onto the permeable ring during initial clean-up of the target.

  • Patent number: 4557812
Abstract: An electrolyte containing 65 g/l zinc and 150 g/l Cu is purified in zinc, that is, the copper is removed, by causing the electrolyte to fluidize a bed 8 of 1/2 mm copper particles. The bed is fluidized by 25% to make it 42 cm deep. An anode 11 is disposed above the top of the bed. A cathode 9 is disposed part-way up the bed. Copper is electroplated onto the bed particles. Any zinc which may be electroplated onto the bed particles tends to redissolve with concomitant cementation, on the particles, of copper, which can be recovered. The electrolyte is thus eventually completely stripped of copper and can be used for zinc electrowinning.

  • Patent number: 4556330
Abstract: The resistance thermometer comprises a temperature dependent measuring resistor (10) and a measuring circuit (11) for measuring the voltage drop at the measuring resistor which is produced by a current (I) flowing across the measuring resistor (10). The measuring resistor (10) lies in the feedback circuit of an operational amplifier (A.sub.1) whose inverting input is applied via a resistor (21) to a constant reference voltage (E). To linearize the characteristic of the measuring circuit a voltage (k.U.sub.T) is applied to the non-inverting input of the operational amplifier (A.sub.1), which voltage is in a predetermined ratio (k) to the output voltage (U.sub.T) of the measuring circuit (11).

  • Patent number: 4554945
Abstract: The fuel injection apparatus includes fuel a fuel metering chamber, an air supply chamber and a further chamber formed in a rigid body. A metering member is slidable within the fuel and gas chambers and passes through the further chamber. The amount of fuel fed to the metering chamber via valve means is controlled by the position of the metering member. An increase in pressure in the air supply chamber opens a valved passage in the metering member and the air expels the fuel from the metering chamber via check valve means. The further chamber collects any leakage of air or fuel past bearing means that receives the metering member.

  • Patent number: 4553326
Abstract: A chain saw safety braking assembly includes a sensing arm pivotally mounted to the housing and having a protrusion. A portion of the sensing arm is located in front of the gripping handle and is arranged to move from a first position to a second position in response to being struck by an appendage of the operator. A flexible brake band is disposed around the peripheral surface of a brake drum, and includes a first end anchored to the housing and a second end coupled to the sensing arm protrusion, such that when the sensing arm moves from the first position to the second position the flexible brake band is moved from a position free of the brake drum to a frictional braking relationship with the brake drum. A latch is rotatably mounted to the housing and is adapted to releasably engage the protrusion on the sensing arm. A spring anchored to the housing cooperates with the latch such that the latch yieldably holds the sensing arm in either the first or the second position.

  • Patent number: 4553662
Abstract: An apparatus for the centered feeding of pieces of laundry to a conveyor comprises a support for hangingly supporting a piece of laundry to be fed to the conveyor, the support is reciprocally movable parallel to the centerline of the conveyor between a first position where a front face of the support is in front of the conveyor and a second position where the front face is disposed above the conveyor. The support comprises a hollow body with a front face formed by a belt with apertures therethrough. The belt is movable transversely of the conveyor centerline and the hollow body. A vacuum source is connected to the hollow body through a valve. Application of vacuum pressure to the hollow body allows an edge of a piece of laundry to be held against the apertured belt. Transverse movement of the belt allows centering of the piece of laundry with respect to the conveyor centerline.
