    Abstract: A apparatus are disclosed for molding plastic articles, wherein the method includes the steps of filling a mold cavity at a first station with heated flowable plastic material and then displacing the mold to a second station where the plastic material is cooled under pressure. The apparatus includes a rotatable support for displacing the mold between the first and second stations, a plastic supply means at the first station to fill the molds, and a displaceable rod at the second station for insertion into the mold to apply pressure to the plastic material during solidification cooling.

    Abstract: The disclosure relates to a modular form of solar energy collector apparatus in which several double-wall glass tube collectors, each with vacuum jacket, depend from opposite sides of an elongated manifold. The manifold includes split halves of foamed polymer insulation and rigid fiberglass reinforced skin thereon, assembled about closed-looped, serpentine liquid carrying tubes preferably of metal or glass in U-tube configurations depending from the manifold halves and extending into the larger double-walled glass tubes, the serpentine tube being connected, respectively, into inlet and outlet header pipes. The interior chamber of the collector tubes is closed by the manifold, thereby enclosing a part of each U-tube branch of the serpentine in a non-turbulent air space.The manifold and tubes are fastened to a support structure of novel construction enabling fabrication as a module and mounting on a solar exposure of a structure such as a roof, wall or frame.

    Abstract: A lid adapted to fit over the opening of a container with an opening therein which permits the contents of the container to be poured therethrough. A tab fitted into the opening in the lid and attached toward the center of the lid. A force applying area positioned in the central portion of the lid and attached to the tab so that the tab moves in an inward direction when a force is applied to the top of the lid. When the force is released from the top of the lid, the tab then assumes its original position within the opening, thus preventing the spilling of the contents within the container to which the lid is applied.

    Abstract: An improved safety closure for containers of harmful products includes an inverted cup-shaped body member formed of resilient plastic material and an integrally molded locking flap connected by an integral hinge to the top periphery of the body member. The locking flap folds into a conforming recess in the top surface of the body portion and, in its folded position, all edges of the locking flap are flush with the adjacent top surface of the body portion. Dispensing openings are provided in the top wall of the body portion and sealing means are provided on the bottom wall of the flap to close the dispensing openings in the folded position of the locking flap. Cooperating latching surfaces are provided on the flap and the body portion to retain the flap in its folded position. A portion of the annular wall of the body portion is recessed so as to permit manual inward depression of a segment of the outer wall of the body portion.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for detecting bulged and sunken sidewalls and incorrect widths on paneled containers.Containers to be inspected are moved along a conveyor. Two groups of three LVDT's (generally opposite from one another) are utilized to measure the distance between each of three points on the container sidewall and a reference line. The measurements are fed to a circuit which determines the deviation of one of the three points from a line passing through the remaining two points. The amount of deviation is utilized to determine whether or not the sidewall is bulged or sunken. Measurements from each pair of opposing LVDT's are fed to a circuit which determines the width of the container at three different heights. The width values are compared to predetermined limits in order to determine if the container width is acceptable.The timing of measurements is controlled by the use of photocell sensors, which detect the passage of a container past particular reference points.

    Abstract: A fluid collection apparatus is disclosed which is useful in separating blood serum or plasma from blood cellular and particulate matter. The apparatus comprises an elongated hollow body closeable at both ends with a self sealing septum near one end. The septum includes a central cavity extending axially from one end of the septum and terminates in a web portion. The septal web portion is pierced by a composite piston member which includes a passageway equipped with a filter. Fluid, therefore, flows through the filter, the piercing means and into the hollow body. A flange on the composite piston extends laterally of the hollow body and sealingly engages the inner wall of a tube filled with a sample of mixed materials.Upon withdrawal of the apparatus, the composite piston remains sealed in the sample containing tube. The web portion of the hollow body reseals on withdrawal of the piercing means to prevent leakage.

    Abstract: This invention provides an apparatus for mounting, driving and steering the wheels of a high mobility wheeled vehicle, such as those used over roadless terrain in tree harvesting operations. Each vehicle wheel is mounted on a rotatable hub which is in turn journaled on the end of a wheel drive housing. The housing is medially pivoted to the wheel suspension structure of the vehicle for steering movements and has a driving motor mounted on the inner end of the housing and connected to the wheel hub through an appropriate gearing system. The pivotal mounting of the drive housing is preferably located at the end of a walking beam arm which is disposed at a substantial horizontal angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle to provide clearance for steering movements of the vehicle wheel. The steering motion is imparted to the drive housing by an actuator which is connected between the inner end of the drive housing and the inner end of the walking beam arm.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for forming and applying a plastic sleeve to a rigid base article, such as a glass bottle. A blank of plastic is wrapped and seamed around the fingers of a stripper sleeve enclosing a mandrel. The stripper sleeve holding the plastic sleeve is extended along its longitudinal axis telescopically over a preheated bottle positioned above and longitudinally aligned with the mandrel and the stripper sleeve. Clamping means, such as a plurality of vacuum fingers, extend downwardly and hold the plastic sleeve in position while the stripper sleeve with its fingers is retracted to its original position. The heat of the bottle causes the plastic sleeve to shrink slightly such that it is held in position relative to the bottle when the clamping means is removed. The bottle and plastic sleeve are then subjected to a thermoconstrictive operation.

    Abstract: Apparatus and method for measuring the volume and shape of a falling gob of glass. Two cameras are used to make section by section measurements of the horizontal extent of the moving gob. Timing of the measurements is controlled so as to cause measurements to be made at equal increments of the motion of the gob. The measurements are made 90.degree. apart with respect to the gob and are utilized to determine the volume of each section of the gob. The volumes of the individual sections of the gob are then summed to determine the total volume of the gob. An image of the gob is generated on a television screen to aid in the determination of the shape of the gob.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a mounting and driving mechanism for the steerable wheels of a multi-wheel, off-road vehicle of the type utilized for transporting long loads, such as trimmed tree trunks or whole trees, over roadless terrain. Such vehicles generally have front and rear quad-wheel assemblies pivotally connected to a centrally disposed elongated bed frame so as to permit lateral rotation of the quad-wheel assemblies about a roll axis disposed below and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bed frame. Each quad-wheel assembly additionally includes a pair of walking beams which are respectively disposed in laterally spaced relationship with respect to the longitudinal bed frame and are pivotally mounted for rotation about a horizontal transverse axis. At each end of each walking beam, a wheel is mounted in a unique fashion together with individually controlled motors for respectively supplying traction power and steering movements to such wheel.

    Abstract: This invention relates to the art of coating glassware while the ware is moving through an annealing lehr which is provided with a cooling section near the exit end of the lehr. The cooling section is of the continuous recirculation type providing an arrangement for generally cooling the ware to a relatively even temperature even though the ware is moving through the lehr in multiple rows and columns. The ware is moved through the lehr on a lehr belt which is formed as a webbed belt and constitutes a foraminous conveyor. A lubricious material in the form of a vapor or mist of an organic, non-metallic coating material selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, fatty acids and their derivatives is injected into the recirculating cooling air in the cooling section of the lehr to thereby form a durable lubricious coating on the exterior surfaces of the glass article. The articles, at the time they are passed through the cooling section, will be at a temperature between 200.degree. F. and 400.degree. F.
