Patent number: 6218484Abstract: A continuous process for the manufacture of olefin polymers in a continuous gas phase polymerization reaction wherein monomer, after passage through the fluidized bed, is cooled to a temperature below its dew point to produce a mixture of cold gas and liquid. All or part of the cold gas is introduced into the bottom of the reactor to serve as the fluidizing gas stream for the fluidized bed. Cold liquid separated from the mixture is warmed to form a heated fluid by passing in indirect heat exchange relation with the fluidized bed and the heated fluid is then injected directly into the bed; combined with the fluidizing gas stream; sprayed on top of the bed or combined with gaseous monomer removed from the fluidized bed for cooling.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1999Date of Patent: April 17, 2001Assignee: Union Carbide Chemicals & Plastics Technology CorporationInventors: Robert Cecil Brown, Norman Louis Balmer

Patent number: 5629375Abstract: This invention relates to processes for preparing aqueous polymer emulsions useful as thickening agents in aqueous compositions in which plating and/or grit formation is reduced in said processes. This invention also relates to methods for reducing plating and/or grit formation in processes for preparing aqueous polymer emulsions useful as thickening agents in aqueous compositions. This invention further relates to polymers which are soluble in, or swelled by, an aqueous alkaline medium to provide thickeners for use in aqueous coating compositions, especially latex paints.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1996Date of Patent: May 13, 1997Assignee: Union Carbide Chemicals & Plastics Technology CorporationInventors: Richard D. Jenkins, David R. Bassett, Ralph A. Sterlen, Jr., Wendy B. Daniels

Patent number: 4701309Abstract: Method of operating a heap leach for leaching uranium and vanadium from a uranium-vanadium bearing ore formed into a relatively tall heap from a mixture of coarsely crushed ore and concentrated sulfuric acid which involves leaching the heap in sections with each section leached in multiple cycles following a predetermined procedure in which the heap is first leached with dilute acid followed by a strong acid application. The product effluent from the strong acid application is recycled a multiple number of times and advanced to the next section. Each section is then washed with fresh water.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1984Date of Patent: October 20, 1987Assignee: Umetco Minerals CorporationInventors: Sundaresan Ramachandran, David O. Skiles, Donald J. Hansen

Patent number: 4592860Abstract: A fluid hydrocarbon feed stream is converted with excess air to a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, also containing the nitrogen content of said air. Following high temperature shift conversion to convert said carbon monoxide to hydrogen and carbon dioxide, the gas mixture is passed to a pressure saving adsorption system used to produce an impure ammonia synthesis gas mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen, with excess nitrogen being separated and removed therefrom with the impurities discharged from the system at high operating pressures, the purge gas effluent from the pressure swing adsorption system can be passed to an expansion turbine for desirable power energy. The ammonia synthesis gas, which can be passed to a methanator for final purification, is thus produced without the need for employing an air separation plant or a nitrogen plant.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 1984Date of Patent: June 3, 1986Assignee: Union Carbide CorporationInventor: Andrija Fuderer

Patent number: 4592882Abstract: High strength titanium diboride (TiB.sub.2) articles which are obtained by sintering articles preformed from TiB.sub.2 powder mixed with epoxy resin by means of isostatic molding using sintering temperatures found to be a critical variable for achieving maximum strength. Resistance to aluminum attack is achieved by removing contaminating oxides, nitrides, and carbides of titanium by selecting either annealing the sintered article in a boron nitride (BN) pack or by including a small amount of BN or elemental boron in the original TiB.sub.2 powder, such that the finished article is substantially free of such contaminants.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1984Date of Patent: June 3, 1986Assignee: Union Carbide CorporationInventor: Lien N.
