  • Patent number: 7742508
Abstract: An electro-optic deflector 51 has an electro-optic material body 519 through which an optical beam 46 is passed. The deflector has no more than three longitudinal electrodes, of which no more than two electrodes 511, 512 have arcuate transverse cross-sections. The electrodes are arranged to create an electric field substantially transverse to a direction of the optical beam to deflect the optical beam passing between the electrodes. The electro-optic deflector has particular application in a Q-switched laser for generating sub-nanosecond optical pulses.

  • Patent number: 7734426
Abstract: This invention focuses on the marriage of solid-state electronics and neuronal function to create a new high-throughput electrophysiological assay to determine a compound's acute and chronic effect on cellular function. Electronics, surface chemistry, biotechnology, and fundamental neuroscience are integrated to provide an assay where the reporter element is an array of electrically active cells. This innovative technology can be applied to neurotoxicity, and to screening compounds from combinatorial chemistry, gene function analysis, and basic neuroscience applications. The system of the invention analyzes how the action potential is interrupted by drugs or toxins. Differences in the action potentials are due to individual toxins acting on different biochemical pathways, which in turn affects different ion channels, thereby changing the peak shape of the action potential differently for each toxin.

  • Patent number: 7639895
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of registering ultrasound image data of an object and second image data of the object, wherein the second image data are three-dimensional (3-D) image data. Sets (first sets IUS) of the ultrasound image data are obtained, wherein each set of ultrasound image data consists of ultrasound image data of locations within a single plane of a coordinate system of the ultrasound image data. Sets (second sets IEX) of 2-D image data from the second image data are extracted, wherein each set of 2-D image data consists of image data of locations within a single cut plane of a coordinate system of the second image data (unit 41). One of the first sets (IUS) is compared with one of the second sets (IEX) and a measure of similarity between the first set (IUS) and the second set (IEX) is automatically generated (unit 42). The similarity is optimised by varying the first set (IUS) and/or the second set (IEX) to be compared (unit 43).

  • Patent number: 7620555
Abstract: A computer implemented process of reviewing a manuscript and determining whether to print the manuscript into a publication substantially reduces the time and cost for authors to deliver the manuscript to journals and publishers. The process also reduces the personnel effort required to process and approve a manuscript on the publisher side. Furthermore, the computer implemented process can timely and accurately track information related to the determination process and the final decision over the manuscript back to the author. As a result, a more efficient and effective manuscript review process can be achieved.

  • Patent number: 7610971
Abstract: A sidetracking system has a pair of serially connected mills (8,9), each having a plurality of circumferentially arranged blades having a tapered cutting portion (82,93) thereon for cutting a window in a casing and then sidetracking in a formation. A whipstock has at least three axially spaced ramps, each ramp being interspaced by a substantially axially extending portion. Each of the ramps has the same angle of inclination to a longitudinal axis and the distance between the ramps is the same as the distance between the tapered portions on the mills (8,9) so that when, in operation, load is shared between both mills. The mills have a button (83,93) of hardened material located on the tapered cutting portions so that the button abrades the whipstock ramps (31,32,33).

  • Patent number: 7451679
Abstract: An apparatus (10) for initiating and dispensing an incendiary comprises a feed mechanism (12) for advancing a line of series connected incendiaries to a dispensing location D; an injection device (14); and a cutter (16). The injection device (14) injects a substance such as glycol into the incendiary as it is moved toward, but prior to reaching, the dispensing location D. The glycol reacts exothermically with another substance such as potassium permanganate in the incendiary. The cutter (16) cuts the incendiary into which the glycol has been injected from the line of series connected incendiary. After the incendiary has been injected with the glycol and cut by the cutter (16) from the line, the feed mechanism (12) advances the incendiary to the dispensing location D where it is dispensed by the action of gravity from the apparatus (10).
