  • Patent number: 4955337
Abstract: A high compression internal combustion engine is provided wherein corresponding ends of the cylinder liners mounted within cylinder bores formed in the engine block are secured to the cylinder head by a first set of fastening elements threaded into the corresponding ends so as to provide a seal between the head and each liner which is capable of withstanding the combustion pressures generated within each liner, when the engine is in operation. A second set of fastening elements, independent of the first set, secures the cylinder head to the engine block so as to provide a seal between complementary surfaces thereof which is capable of withstanding pressures generated by the circulating cooling medium during operation of the engine.

  • Patent number: 4953338
Abstract: A display assembly (FIG. 1) comprises a plurality of panels (1) joined together by elongate connecting members (2, 3). Each panel has a removable frame formed by extrusions (6) in each of which is a slot (13) having a restricted entrance (FIG. 2). Each connecting member (2, 3) has two heads (18) which can be slid into slots (13) in adjacent panels (1), from one end, to join the panels together, each head being too wide to pass through the restricted entrance of the slot. A central body portion (20) of the connecting member, to which the heads (18) are joined, is positioned between, and extends outwards between, adjacent panels to facilitate access to the connecting member and enable the screen assembly to be dismantled easily. A longitudinal slot (50), (FIGS. 21 to 23), can be provided in a part of the body (20) that is accessible between connected panels, to enable components such as shelf-supporting brackets to be secured to the screen assembly.

  • Patent number: 4953113
Abstract: In a exemplary computerized FM Data Transceiver terminal, an antenna may extend longitudinally from one end and a battery drawer at an opposite (lower) end may receive a detachable bar code scanner module or the like for mechanized data input. In such computer terminals which are hand-held for relatively long time periods, e.g., during inventory data collection, use of the terminal is particularly facilitated by indenting the underside of the terminal intermediate its ends to form a hand grip configuration and by providing a strap spanning the indentation such that the fingers of one hand can be inserted between the hand grip and strap in a quick smooth motion without requiring as a separate motion the lifting of the strap to accommodate the fingers. These features coact to provide for an outstandingly comfortable and secure gripping of the terminal during use.

  • Patent number: 4952849
Abstract: A controller operates in pre-ignition and ignition phases to obtain stable and reliable control of operation of a half-bridge DC-AC converter in a frequency range which is offset from a resonant frequency of an output circuit which includes a transformer and capacitors and which couples the converter to a fluorescent lamp load. The converter is supplied with a DC voltage from a switched-mode DC-DC supply of a pre-conditioner circuit which responds to a full-wave rectified AC voltage and which is supplied with pulse-width modulated gating pulses from the controller, preferably at a frequency which is the same as that of the converter. The controller monitors signals from the output circuit and pre-conditioner circuits and exercises control to reliable starting and highly efficient lamp operation and to obtain an in-phase proportional relationship of input voltage and current waveforms.

  • Patent number: 4947887
Abstract: A diaphragm operated valve assembly is controlled by an electromagnetic valve assembly. A flat disc armature, which forms part of a flux path, is operable in an inner chamber to modulate the flow between the inner chamber and an exit port in response to an applied magnetic force. The level of the effective magnetic force is a function of the armature mass, and the pressure acting on the disc surface. A pole piece adjacent to the flat disc armature is slidably adjustable to establish a specified force to actuate the armature to the closed or sealing position. This specified force is proportional to the current flow through the winding of the electromagnetic valve assembly. Thus the armature operates to seal communication between the inner chamber and the exit port at a given pressure differential as a function of current flow. The travel distance between the armature and a nonmagnetic seal seat has been minimized by spring biasing the armature in proximity to the seal seat.

  • Patent number: 4941850
Abstract: The present invention provides a connector having a seamless tubular metallic shell which not only provides proper RFI/EMC shielding but also is constructed in such a way as to prevent ingress of moulding material into the spaces between contacts of the connector. This is achieved by forming one end of a seamless tube of ferromagnetic material (which is initially of substantially uniform cross-sectional area) such that is collapsed on to itself and a cable connected to the connector whereby to tightly seal the send of the tube on to the cable to prevent ingress of moulding material subsequently applied to the exterior of the shell. In the case of a cable providing a braid or foil shielding element, this process simultaneously provides an electrical bond between the shell and a portion of the shielding element of the cable exposed by removing a portion of the outer insulation covering of the cable.

  • Patent number: 4940974
Abstract: In an exemplary communications system a multiplicity of mobile terminals are to share a communications link with a primary processor. The primary processor may transmit a multiterminal polling signal defining a series of successive response time slots which the terminals may randomly select. A terminal wishing to send a message transmits a brief response burst in the selected time slot giving its identification. The primary processor may then sequentially poll specific individual terminals having messages to send. The primary processor may maintain a record of currently active terminals and/or of collisions (where more than one terminal seeks to transmit in the same response time slot), and as needed may automatically send e.g. with its multiterminal poll, a time slot number change, creating a greater or lesser number of time slots for future use by the active terminals.
