  • Patent number: 8132676
Abstract: Hydrophilic membrane particularly suited for blotting applications, preferably Western blotting. A pre-wet hydrophobic membrane substrate, preferably made of PVDF, is contacted with a monomer solution and subjected to a UV-initiated free radical polymerization step to render the substrate permanently hydrophilic. The resulting membrane exhibits low background fluorescence, high protein binding, excellent retention of protein sample spot morphology, and extended dynamic range (high signal-to-noise ratio, enhanced sample detectability). The membrane demonstrates comparable or higher performance in Western blotting applications than conventional nitrocellulose Western blotting membranes, particularly for protein detection at low sample concentrations, and is directly water-wettable, eliminating the need for an alcohol pre-wet step prior to use.

  • Patent number: 8118191
Abstract: A dispense apparatus and system for dispensing suspensions or emulsions. The system ensures uniformity of distribution of the dispersed phase within the continuous-phase liquid by moving the fluid through the dispense cartridge, such as with a continuous or pulsating flow. In one embodiment, peristaltic pumps are positioned upstream and downstream of the dispense cartridge, in fluid communication with and forming a single loop with a fluid source. Circulation between the fluid source and the dispense cartridge is maintained. In a second embodiment, a pump circulates fluid into and out of the dispense cartridge and is also in fluid communication with a fluid source such as with a pinch valve to allow proper filling of the dispense cartridge from the fluid source. In a third embodiment, a reversing pump is placed between the dispense cartridge and fluid source to continually or continuously pump fluid into and out of the dispense cartridge.

  • Patent number: 8114295
Abstract: The present invention provides an automated system and method for packing chromatography columns. In one embodiment, the system first determines the type of media that is present in the column, and uses this information to generate an automated procedure to pack the specific media type. In a second embodiment, the media type is made known to the system, such as via input from the operator. The system then uses this information, in the same manner as in the first embodiment, to generate an automated procedure to pack the specific media type. Finally, in a third embodiment, parameters such as column height and rate of compression are made known to the system, such as via input from the operator. The system then packs the column in accordance with these supplied parameters.

  • Patent number: 8114204
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for transmitting information between a device within a housing to a second device, preferably a test or monitoring unit, outside of the housing. There are numerous issues associated with transferring information from within a sealed housing to an external device. In some cases, the use of wires inside the housing may be impractical, due to internal conditions, such as fluid flow, pressure or temperature. In one embodiment, the antenna of the external RF reading device is electrically connected to the dome of the housing. In another embodiment, the device within the housing is electrically connected to a housing component. In another embodiment, the gasket is used to pass information from within the housing to an external device.

  • Patent number: 8085810
Abstract: Methods for pipelining, piggybacking, and transporting cross layer parameters through a network to reduce round-trip times are disclosed. Application activation, such as accessing a web-site through the internet, currently uses several protocols, including DNS Name resolution, establishing a TCP connection, sending HTTP Request and getting HTTP-Response that contains the web-page data, before the data from the web-site can be displayed to the user. Such operations take several round-trips through the transit network and are of the order of 100 to 200 milliseconds in the wireless access network in the best case. A method of generating a multi-part message to reduce these round trip is disclosed, as well as a proxy device which minimizes client side round trips while utilizing standard messaging in the wireline network. The invention includes client side user parameter gathering when specifying the application first (pre-fix), or specifying the application last (post-fix).

  • Patent number: 8084259
Abstract: The present invention describes a system for accurately measuring the concentration of a substance within a filter housing. A concentration sensor and a communications device are coupled so as to measure and transmit the concentration of a particular substance within the filter housing while in use. This system allows the operator to certify the integrity of the filters within the filter housing at the customer site without additional equipment. In one embodiment, a tracer gas, such as helium or hydrogen, is added to a carrier and injected into the system. The concentration of tracer gas at a specific operating transmembrane pressure is indicative of bubble pointing specific pores in the filter. This test will give a more sensitive indication of the bubble point and the presence of defects than a standard diffusion test. In a second embodiment, two gasses, in a known ratio, are introduced into the filter housing.
