Abstract: Carboxylic acids, e.g., adipic acid, are more selectively prepared by oxidizing cyclohexane with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas, in liquid phase, in a solvent reaction medium which comprises a polar protic or aprotic solvent, and also in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of catalyst values dissolved in said solvent reaction medium, the catalyst values comprising at least one solvent-soluble cobalt compound and at least one solvent-soluble chromium compound.
Abstract: New soft .beta.-adrenergic blocking agents, useful in the treatment or prevention of cardiovascular disorders and in the treatment of glaucoma, have the formula ##STR1## wherein n is an integer from 0 to 10; R is C.sub.6 -C.sub.12 cycloalkyl-C.sub.p H.sub.2p --, C.sub.6 -C.sub.18 polycycloalkyl-C.sub.p H.sub.2p --, C.sub.6 -C.sub.18 polycycloalkenyl-C.sub.p H.sub.2p -- or C.sub.6 C.sub.12 cycloalkenyl-C.sub.p H.sub.2p -- (wherein p is 0, 1, 2 or 3), or together with the adjacent ##STR2## group represents a variety of other complex ester groupings; R.sub.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 alkyl; and Ar is a divalent radical containing at least one aromatic nucleus. The corresponding pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts are also described.
Abstract: Soluble polymeric colorants composed of free amine groups and chromophoric groups covalently bonded to an organic backbone are disclosed. The number of free amine groups is not less than one-half the number of chromophoric groups. The colorants are characterized by being free of sulfonate, phosphonate and carboxylate groups. The preparation and use of these colorants is also disclosed.

Abstract: Polymeric red colors having the structure ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently selected from among hydrogen, halos, lower alkyls, lower alkoxies, nitros, and sulfonates, R.sub.3 is selected from hydrogens, alkyls and alkylsulfonates, and R.sub.4 is an alkyl-containing polymer linking a plurality (n) of anthraquinones into a polymeric colorant are disclosed to be used as nonabsorbable colorants for edibles and cosmetics. They may also be used in such substrates as lakes.
Abstract: An intestinal anti-inflammatory preparation comprising a polymeric agent for releasing 5-aminosalicylic acid or its salts is disclosed. The polymeric agent comprises a nonabsorbable pharmacologically acceptable organic polymer backbone containing aromatic rings to which are covalently bonded via azo bonds a plurality of salicylic acid or salicylate salt groups. The azo bonds attach to the salicylates' 5-position carbon. The polymer's azo bonds undergo bacterial cleavage in the mammalian lower bowel to release 5-aminosalicylic acid and/or its salts.

Abstract: Polymeric colorants are prepared by the process of (a) reacting acetaldehyde and acetamide in a mole ratio of 1:2-4 with an acid catalyst to form ethylidene-bis-acetamide, (b) cracking the ethylidene-bis-acetamide to vinylacetamide, (c) polymerizing the vinylacetamide with a free-radical catalyst, (d) hydrolyzing the resulting polymer with mineral acid and neutralizing with base to yield poly(vinylamine), and (e) coupling monomeric optically chromophoric groups to amine nitrogens of the poly(vinylamine).

Abstract: The ultrafiltration purification of aqueous solutions of polymeric colorants, wherein low molecular weight impurities are removed in an ultrafiltrate leaving a purified polymeric colorant-bearing retentate, is carried out with improved efficiency when, during at least two diavolumes of ultrafiltration, the salt content of the retentate is maintained above about 1% by weight.
Abstract: Organic pigment lakes are prepared by adsorption of a high molecular weight or polymeric dye onto suitable substratum or extender therefor. The properties of the resultant polymeric lakes approach those of true pigments, and said lakes exhibit maximized dye loading capacities and are exceptionally free of bleed. Thus, the applicability of lake colors is extended in the various food systems and their use is also permitted as industrial pigments.
Abstract: The novel prostaglandins PGB.sub.x are useful for a wide variety of in vivo and in vitro biological properties, including the reversal of degenerative changes in mitochondria, the protection of the heart against cardiac insults, the protection and reversal of anoxic damage to the brain, and the improvement of mammalian performance for conditioned psychological tasks. These prostaglandins PGB.sub.x are prepared, for example, by the base catalyzed reaction of PGB.sub.1.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for electrophotographically imaging a photosensitive film in which a fractional area of the film, selected by automatic or preprogrammed access, is electrostatically charged and thereafter exposed to a pattern of radiation, is moved along a path of travel to a second location at which the latent image is developed by the application of toning fluid, and is preferably returned along the path of travel to fix or fuse the developed image as a next adjacent area is indexed for exposure. Additional areas of the film may be sequentially imaged by repeating the above sequence or by reinserting the partially completed film at a later time and addressing any desired used or unused area.

Abstract: Alkali and alkaline earth metal salts of salicylamide are administered in solid oral dosage forms with substantially improved analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and sedative results as compared with salicylamide. Highest blood levels are obtained by administering enteric-coated salicylamide salt dosage forms.
Abstract: Polysaccharide matrices, e.g., agarose, for use in certain affinity chromatography procedures, are activated with sodium metaperiodate, derivatized with a symmetrical dihydrazide and thence reductively stabilized, preferably with sodium cyanoborohydride. Moreover, intermediate Schiff bases formed from the NaIO.sub.4 -oxidized polysaccharide are selectively, reductively stabilized with said sodium cyanoborohydride.
