  • Patent number: 4055205
Abstract: An elastomeric seal suitable for use in sealing non-circular cylinders of hydraulic presses against loss of the working fluid. This seal is an elastomeric (e.g. rubber) seal having a generally L-shaped cross section. One portion of the seal functions as a support portion and includes longitudinally extending ribs along its inner face for engaging in a sealed relationship with a supporting structure. The other portion of the seal acts as a wiping portion in engagement with the moving cylinder. The wiping and support portions come together in a generally perpendicular relationship to form a rounded nose where their outer faces meet and a reinforcing fabric is formed into the seal along its outer surface and extending across the nose of the seal.

  • Patent number: 4054632
Abstract: An improved method for handling of materials having characteristics such that they are normally solid at room ambient temperatures and are prepared and used at elevated temperatures to transfer the form of the material to a liquid. The improved method provides for handling of the material in liquid form and extruding it as a stream or continuous flow, cooling the outer surface of the same to solidify it and severing the stream of material with the hardened exterior and liquid interior such that the individual segments severed therefrom seal themselves and form individual pillow-like segments which can be then further cooled to a hardened state and readily handled, packaged, shipped and used.

  • Patent number: 4050440
Abstract: A combination fireplace/furnace is provided wherein the fire located within the furnace may be viewed as in a fireplace exteriorly of the furnace. The combination fireplace/furnace includes a woodburning furnace having a firebox defining a fire chamber wherein wood may be burned. An opening in the firebox surrounded by a tunnel member extending generally horizontally outwardly from the firebox permits viewing through the tunnel member of a fire burning within the fire chamber. Means are provided to close the tunnel member when viewing of the fire within the fire chamber is not desired. Transparent closure means are also provided to permit viewing through the tunnel while closing off the fire chamber from the viewing area.

  • Patent number: 4050616
Abstract: A telescopically extendable and collapsible bumper-style bicycle carrying rack for motor vehicles. A pair of bumperette housing members disposed in spaced apart relationship are secured to or form a part of the bumper of a motor vehicle. Telescoping support members are members are mounted within the bumperette housing members and are vertically extendable therefrom. A cross brace member is transversely mounted to the tops of the vertically extendable support members for vertical movement therewith. A plurality of bicycle hanger members are adjustably positionable along the length of the cross brace member to enable rapid placement of the hangers for accommodating the size constraints of the particular bicycle to be carried thereby. The vertically telescoping support members may be manually raised and lowered, in which case manually operable latching members lock the telescoping parts in their extended operative position, or can be automatically raised and lowered by means of a motor assembly.

  • Patent number: 4037542
Abstract: An auxiliary shelf apparatus positionable with respect to the outer edge of a shelf for providing an extension of the shelf surface onto which file boxes stored on the shelf can be pulled and there supported for inspection of contents. A tray surface is provided with a support bracket which engages the shelf upon which the file box is stored and the next-above shelf to support the tray surface in generally flush alignment with the shelf. The support bracket is adjustable to fit shelving having various spacings between shelves. The auxiliary shelf apparatus is disengageable from the shelving so that it may be readily movable to different locations on the shelving.

  • Patent number: 4036016
Abstract: A reciprocating engine utilizes the pressure difference between a partial vacuum and the ambient atmospheric pressure as a source of power. The engine includes an engine block defining a plurality of cylinders each having a piston operating within it. The first or outer face of each piston is maintained substantially at atmospheric pressure while the second or inner face of each piston is maintained at less than ambient atmospheric pressure during the power stroke of the piston by connection to a flame-free vacuum source. Once each piston has reached the end of this power stroke due to the pressure difference across the piston, a limited amount of air is permitted to enter the respective cylinder adjacent the second or inner face of the piston to thereby return the second face of the piston to substantially atmospheric pressure.

  • Patent number: 4032492
Abstract: A hot melt composition is used to form a closure liner, e.g. the circular, integral, gasket-like member adhered to the periphery of a circular top or closure for a food jar or the like. The hot melt composition is selected to have, in the solid state, sufficient deformabilty, resiliency, hardness, lubricity, and other requirements of closure liners. It has been found that silicone oil, used in a concentration of about 1-8% by weight of the total hot melt composition can provide a high degree of lubricity, similar to the type of lubricity in self-lubricated plastic bearings. The remainder of the hot melt system or composition generally comprises a rubbery block co-polymer (serving as a film former), a hydrocarbon wax, a hydrocarbon oil, and, if desired, a thermoplastic vinyl arene polymer such as poly(methylstyrene).
