Patent number: 4692982Abstract: Cryogenic process and apparatus for removing adherent coatings or linings from metallic substrates, especially the interiors of metal vessels or pipes. In one embodiment, a metal vessel having a polymeric interior lining is pressurized to about 900 psi, and the lining is contacted with a cryogenic liquid, preferably carbon dioxide, while this pressure is maintained. The pressure is high enough so that the cryogenic liquid does not boil. The lining is then subjected to shock by ultrasound, for example. This causes the lining to break up into small particles and fall off the metal substrate. These particles, suspended in the cryogenic liquid, are removed from the pressure vessel and separated from the cryogenic liquid, which can be reused. In another embodiment, the cryogenic liquid is injected into a pipe having an adherent mineral deposit while maintaining a pressure of about 700 psi. A stream of cryogenic liquid containing suspended mineral particles is removed from the pipe.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1986Date of Patent: September 15, 1987Inventor: Norman B. Rice

Patent number: 4659499Abstract: A liquid crystalline material for use in optic displays has the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 can be the same or different and are generally an alkyl group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, or other groups as set forth herein. Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 can be the same or different and generally is an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a halogen, a cyano, or hydrogen. Such a material has a wide nematic range, good viscosity and good solubility such that it can be readily utilized in commercial applications. The nematic material can also be utilized with small amounts of dichroic dyes or mixed with other liquid crystalline materials.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1984Date of Patent: April 21, 1987Assignee: Crystaloid Electronics CompanyInventor: Joseph P. Patent number: 4635024Abstract: A method of welding electrical contacts onto conductive bodies including engaging a surface of the contact with the conductive body and passing a welding current through a pair of spaced surface areas of the contact to provide weld action and wherein a rib portion between the pair of spaced areas retains unoxidized metal thereon to improve electrical contact properties of any article made and utilizing the contact and particularly the ribbed area thereof for make and break engagement with other members of an electric circuit.A new control article is also provided wherein a contact therein has a raised center rib thereon for contacting an associated means for make and break circuit action, which contact is made from silver or silver alloy and has uncontaminated silver on the surface of the rib or center area of the contact.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1984Date of Patent: January 6, 1987Inventors: Robert M. Patent number: 4609561Abstract: A frozen, aerated fruit juice dessert made entirely from natural products contains at least one fruit juice source in association with 0.1 to 10 percent by weight of various stabilizers based upon the total weight of the mix. An amount of water and other ingredients is such that the blend has a brix value of from about 10 to about 35 and for more desirable results of 20 to 35. No refined sugar or corn sweetener is contained in the blend. Moreover, the juice is frozen to form a soft frozen dessert on the order of soft ice cream or yogurt.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1985Date of Patent: September 2, 1986Assignee: Olympus Industries, Inc.Inventors: Bill R. Wade, Thelma L. Wade

Patent number: 4609514Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for permanently and rapidly imparting surface characteristics, such as texture or graining, to decorative coverings for substrates, such as wall coverings in the absence of any degradation thereof, so that when the coverings are subsequently applied to the substrate, such as an aircraft bulkhead, by heat application, the texture previously imparted will remain intact. The process and apparatus uses magnetic attraction in tenter frames to carry and expose continuous webs of thermoplastic to high temperature embossing with simultaneous and subsequent rapid cooling. The arrangements and process avoid lengthy press application at high temperature which has the effect of degrading color and other characteristics of the material being treated.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1983Date of Patent: September 2, 1986Assignee: Schneller, Inc.Inventors: Robert L. Kyle, Donald R. Cardis

Patent number: 4583516Abstract: The invention relates to a fireplace insert having unique characteristics of a fiberglass insulated twin wall construction engineered to work on the principle of air convection. Cold air is drawn into a bottom inlet, circulated through channels between the firebox and an air shroud or air casing, and forced through outlets at the top of the unit back into the room. A controllable damper cuts down the heat carried up the chimney, and an air tight door controls the amount of in-house air drawn to feed the fire, and hence, the amount of heat that escapes up the chimney.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1982Date of Patent: April 22, 1986Inventor: Tommy W. Patterson

Patent number: 4584217Abstract: A composite pressure sensitive adhesive construction has an adhesive portion located laterally on each side of a carrier. The central portion of the carrier is free from adhesive. A split release liner covers each adhesive portion. In use, the adhesive construction can be applied to any article, for example an insulation tube, and especially articles having a split or opening so that the article can be secured in a closed position. Moreover, the adhesive construction can have one laterally adhesive portion applied to the article, with the remaining adhesive portion having the release liner thereon which is readily removed and the remaining adhesive portion securely engaged to the article.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1983Date of Patent: April 22, 1986Assignee: Morgan Adhesives CompanyInventor: Jack M. Patent number: 4545466Abstract: Disclosed is a vibration damping apparatus incorporated in the crossing of diagonal members such as braces of a framed structure for damping vibration imparted by external force such as an earthquake or a strong wind. The apparatus comprises a plurality of rotatable members or discs, a resistive body disposed between the discs, and a pair or pairs of link bars causing relative rotation of the discs in response to the impartation of the external force, whereby the vibration is damped by the resistance force of the resistive body resisting to the external force.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1984Date of Patent: October 8, 1985Assignee: Oiles Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Jiro Izeki, Ikuo Shimoda

Patent number: 4489949Abstract: The invention teaches an improved arrow construction which, by the partial or complete elimination of tail feathers as a means for stabilizing flight trajectory, improves both the speed and the accuracy of the arrow. A resilient stabilizing tail is substituted for tail feathers which substantially eliminates aerodynamic drag. In addition, the invention contemplates the use of a "shock piston" within the interior of the arrow shaft which serves to increase arrow penetration in the target by striking the arrow head after the initial target impact.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1983Date of Patent: December 25, 1984Inventors: Donald M. Taylor, Thomas H. Whittaker
