  • Patent number: 5433508
Abstract: A powered headrest for an automotive seat, which includes, within a seat back of the seat, a slider member engageable with a stay of the headrest, the slider member being moved vertically by operation of a motor, a rotatable guide rod, and a lock member to be engaged biasingly with a recessed portion of the stay. An operation knob and associated connecting elements are provided in the headrest, with such an arrangement that to simply operate or press the knob will cause rotational motion of the guide rod, and the lock member will only be interlocked with that rotational motion of guide rod, so as to place the headrest stay in an unlocked state with respect to the slider.

  • Patent number: 5430506
Abstract: The lens of the invention is specifically designed for use with a slit lamp biomicroscope or operating microscope in the examination or treatment of a patient's eye. The invention consists of one or more coaxial lens elements, with at least one of the lens elements utilizing at least one convex aspheric surface of revolution. The aspheric surface or surfaces utilized are chosen to correct astigmatic imagery of the lens, with the formed aerial image free of excessive field curvature and astigmatism. The lens is held at a distance from the patient's eye pupil corresponding to the secondary focal length of the lens. If the examined eye is emmetropic, and the lens is held in a position wherein the entrance pupil of the lens is conjugate with that of the examined eye, an image of the entrance pupil of the patient's eye will be formed at the pupil aperture of the optical system of the slit lamp biomicroscope used to observe the aerial image of the fundus as produced by the lens.

  • Patent number: 5429212
Abstract: A parking lock mechanism for use in a vehicle drivetrain subassembly having an electric motor coupled to a reduction gear set with the gear set including a rotatable output member having a plurality of circumferentially spaced locking holes. The mechanism comprises a locking pin movably mounted in an end cover structure of the drivetrain subassembly and a cam rotatably mounted in the end cover structure and having an inner portion in contacting engagement with the locking pin. An actuator assembly is provided for applying a torsional load to the cam which urges the locking pin into contacting engagement with the output member when the locking holes are circumferentially misaligned with the locking pin and causes a predetermined rotation of the cam about its longitudinal axis from a released position to an actuated position when one of the locking holes is circumferentially aligned with the pin.

  • Patent number: 5426509
Abstract: A device for detecting contaminant particles on a surface of a monochrome web of material of a first color imprinted with a second color different from said first color comprises a frame member with a feed roll of said web material and a takeup roll, with the web material passing from said feed roll to said takeup roll past an inspection stage between the feed roll and takeup roll. The inspection stage has a light detecting means mounted on it for collecting light transversely from the web as the web moves past the inspection stage. The light detecting means is communicated to a light analyzing means to observe variations in the collected light and the light analyzing means is communicated to a means for indicating that a variation beyond a threshold amount has been observed by the light analyzing means.

  • Patent number: 5425836
Abstract: A die for pressingly bonding a foam padding to a covering member of assemblage of a vehicle seat, the foam padding being of a one-side-opened type having a hollow therein, which die includes an upper die comprising a main die portion and a movable die member connected hingedly thereto. The movability of such die member allows easy securement of the foam padding to the upper die, as the movable die member is easily inserted into the hollow of the padding, thereby allowing further insertion of the upper die on the whole into within the padding. When pressing the padding against the covering member by use of the upper die, the movable die member is moved within the padding to a position on the same horizontal line with the main die portion, giving a pressure evenly both padding and covering member for effective bonding of them.

  • Patent number: 5424039
Abstract: To produce active carbon particles by carbonizing a carbon based raw material in a steam atmosphere while feeding electricity to the raw material received in a rotary reactor, a plurality of electrical receiving rods are secured to the inner wall surface of a cylindrical wall of the rotary reactor in the equally-spaced relationship as seen in the circumferential direction. In operation, a certain intensity of electric current is fed to the electricity receiving rods via a plurality of electrodes and a plurality of electrode contacts to induce arc-discharging between the electricity receiving rods and the raw material received in the rotary reactor. To reliably prevent the temperature of the steam atmosphere from being abnormally elevated, carbon dioxide gas is introduced into a carbonizing chamber of the rotary reactor via a gas inflow pipe.

  • Patent number: 5424789
Abstract: An optical device comprising a lens and an adjustable lens holder which is adapted to be positioned on an existing slit lamp biomicroscope such that the lens may be selectively positioned in the path of the illuminating light beam from the slit lamp light source. In one embodiment of the invention, the adjustable holder is designed to be rotatably positioned in association with the slit lamp light illumination apparatus and in relation to the projecting or objective lens of the slit lamp illumination system. The lens holder is designed to pass a narrowed zone on support structures associated with the light illumination apparatus and to frictionally engage a portion of the support structure while allowing rotation of the lens into and out of the path of the illuminating light beam.

  • Patent number: 5423593
Abstract: A lumbar support device for an automotive seat, which comprises a drive mechanism, a crank-like rod operatively connected to the drive mechanism, an elastic synthetic resin support plate, the upper part of which is movably secured to a seat back frame within a seat back of the seat, and a lumbar support portion defined in the lower part of the support plate. The lumbar support portion is formed in a cambered or forwardly curved shape. A forward and backward displacement of the support plate may be ajustably effected by the drive mechanism and crank-like rod to apply a pressure against the lumbar support area of foam cushion member of the seat back, and because of integral formation of both support plate and lumbar support portion, a gradual pressure gradient or distribution may be attained in the seat back cushion member, without creating a local non-pressure or extremely soft spot therein.

  • Patent number: 5414201
Abstract: A process and a sorbent/catalyst composition are described for the oxidation of volatile organic compounds. The process uses the steps of adsorbing a volatile organic compound in a first segment of a sorbent/catalyst bed at an adsorption temperature, followed by sequential heating of an opposed second segment of a sorbent/catalyst bed, downstream of the first segment, from an initial temperature to an oxidation temperature, desorbing the volatile organic compound from the first segment of the bed by heating, and cooling of the first and second segments of the bed respectively. The sorbent/catalyst contains an adsorption segment, e.g., metal oxides, unexchanged zeolites, carbon and polymeric resins, etc., and a catalytic segment for the subsequent catalytic oxidation of the compounds.

  • Patent number: 5411213
Abstract: A process for comminuting a commercial and/or municipal waste material, having an anti-agglomeration or partitioning agent thereon, by subjecting the material to a compressive shear force. The process can be applied successively until a desired particle size distribution is achieved. This process reduces tendency of solids as being milled to agglomerate together to form larger particles and eventually sheets by charging said solids to the mill with sufficient partitioning agent present to suppress agglomeration to increase the efficiency of the process.

  • Patent number: 5410320
Abstract: The invention applies to a cylindrical, electronically scanned antenna system wherein the scan occurs at rates more rapid than the information being processed, and wherein the invention comprises improvements in the distribution subsystem designed to achieve high values of gain by eliminating sampling losses and still assimilating and processing the information logically, fully and accurately, even though the antenna is scanning at a rapid rate. The multiple time sequenced outputs of multiple beams are themselves coherently summed, after being differentially delayed so that they all peak at the same time.
