    Abstract: A pair of ice bodies each have a planar surface which are warmed to melt the surface. Then at least one of the surfaces is provided with a cavity engendered by the application of a dimension controlled heat source, suitably by engraving with a heated relief formed die-like tool having a metal engraving element of a given design. The engraving element is warmed above the ice melting temperature and brought into contact with a planar surface of the surface of the ice body so that the element melts away portions of the ice body in the area of the element and the melt water is simultaneously removed by gravity, a vacuum or by a blast of cold air. When the desired engraving depth has been attained, the planar surfaces of the ice bodies to be mated are wetted by warming and are pressed together and if needed, cooled to freeze the interface producing an assembled ice body with an internal engraving and a transparent seam.

    Abstract: The disclosure herein describes an apparatus for the measuring and positioning of cants and their subsequent feeding to a sawing station. A feed table is used for conveying the cants towards the station and includes a lateral guide against which each cant is positioned. A scanning device measures transverse distances across the planar faces of the cant at intervals during its travel on the feed table. The information is recorded by computer which, in turns, causes the cant to be clamped between live rolls after the scanning and positioned to provide optimum positioning and orientation of the cant relative to the sawing elements.

    Abstract: A compensating thread brake useful, in particular, with warping creels. The thread brake has a rotatable roller whose circumference is at least partially surrounded by and drivable by thread. The roller is connected to the rotor of a turbine. A mechanical thread tension comparator by way of its setting member, influences a throttle in the path of the turbine inlet or outlet stream. The setting member may, preferably, be a throttle plate which regulates the inlet or outlet ports of turbine T. In this manner, the thread tension may be controlled without frictional load on the threads or the need to provide seals against oil or the like. Additionally, an eddy current brake can be provided for the nominal setting of the basic thread tension.

    Abstract: A thermoplastic housing formed of two mirror image halves snap fitted together has first and second resiliently cantilevered channeled ramps each having mating halves on opposite sides of a housing chamber. A needle extends from a cylindrical body having an enlarged collar, the body being received between the first ramp halves with the needle protruding through the opening from the housing chamber and the collar restrained by the first ramp halves at corresponding coplanar collar edges. Compounds of this general structure are known, they mimic the immunological reaction of captan and related compounds which are not stable in water and thus cannot be satisfactorily used as standards in testing for the presence and level of presence of captan and related compounds. There is also provided a method of carrying out such testing, utilizing such standards in which the standard (I) is coupled to a protein that is large enough to elicit an immune response in warm blooded animals, to yield compound (II).
