Patent number: 7618780Abstract: The invention relates to the use of mass labelled probes to characterize nucleic acids by mass spectrometry. Thus the invention provides methods of detecting the presence of a target nucleic acid in a sample, using a circularizing probe in which a mass tag is present in the probe. Further methods of detecting the presence of a target nucleic acid are provided, which in contrast use a probe detection sequence in the circularizing probe, wherein the probe detection sequence is detected with a probe attached to a mass tag. Methods for determining a genetic profile from the genome of an organism also form part of the invention.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2005Date of Patent: November 17, 2009Assignee: Trillion Genomics LimitedInventor: Andrew Thompson

Patent number: 7594974Abstract: A method of cutting material for use in an implantable medical device employs a plotted laser cutting system. The laser cutting system is computer controlled and includes a laser combined with a motion system. The laser precisely cuts segments out of source material according to a predetermined pattern as designated by the computer. The segments are used in constructing implantable medical devices. The cutting energy of the laser is selected so that the cut edges of the segments are melted to discourage delamination or fraying, but communication of thermal energy into the segment beyond the edge is minimized to avoid damaging the segment adjacent the edge.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2004Date of Patent: September 29, 2009Assignee: 3F Therapeutics, Inc.Inventors: Douglas S. Patent number: 7586831Abstract: In order to help maximize the capacity of an optical storage device, and increase the efficiency of addressing, a unique addressing scheme is utilized to provide addressing for an optical storage disk. Importantly, this scheme is compatible with multilayer disks and helps to minimize the potential for errors. In the addressing scheme of the present invention, the storage media is provided with a wobbled groove, which includes addressing information for the media. More specifically, the surface of the media is divided into predetermined sections, or portions, each portion having a selected number of wobble periods. Within these wobble periods, the amplitude of one single wobble period is either reduced or eliminated. The location of this reduced or eliminated wobble signal can then be determined by the readout system of the present invention and utilized to provide addressing information.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2005Date of Patent: September 8, 2009Assignee: Alliance Storage Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Johannes J. Patent number: 7567188Abstract: The present invention provides for a method, system, and computer program for the application of data deduplication according to a policy-based strategy of tiered data. The method operates by defining a plurality of data storage policies for data in a deduplication system, policies which may be arranged in tiers. Data objects are classified according to a selected data storage policy and are split into data chunks. If the selected data storage policy for the data object does not allow deduplication, the data chunks are stored in a deduplication pool. If the selected data storage policy for the data object allows deduplication, deduplication is performed. The data storage policy may specify a maximum number of references to data chunks, facilitating storage of new copies of the data chunks when the maximum number of references is met.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 2008Date of Patent: July 28, 2009Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Matthew J. Patent number: 7551525Abstract: The present invention provides for a method for reducing undesirable skipping during playback of a compact disc in a compact disc player. A lens system of the compact disc player reads audio data and subcode data from the compact disc. The subcode data includes Q channel bits and P channel bits. The actual time lapse of the compact disc playback is calculated from the Q channel bits and the P channel bits, while a target time lapse is calculated based on data received from a real-time clock. The difference between the two time lapse values is calculated, and if the differences is greater than a predetermined threshold, the lens system is repositioned to read the audio data from the compact disc corresponding to a predetermined time interval in advance of the current position of the lens system.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2008Date of Patent: June 23, 2009Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Edward G. Patent number: 7548731Abstract: The present invention provides for reducing power consumption of a positioning system having wireless beacons. A wireless transmitter static beacon is provided, which has a known position, signal strength, and range. A mobile device is positioned within the range of the static beacon and its position is determined based on a signal from the static beacon. Foreign wireless transmitter devices and their locations are detected. The immobility of the foreign devices is evaluated by periodically determining their positions and calculating the frequency with which their positions change, and by determining the devices' types. A subset of the foreign devices that are immobile are selected and amalgamated into the positioning system based on device type and position-changing frequency. The signal strength of the static beacon is reduced, which in turn reduces the range of the static beacon.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2008Date of Patent: June 16, 2009Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Ahamed S. Patent number: 7548053Abstract: To create a broad band spectrometer, a plurality of individual antenna based bolometers are fabricated on the surface of a single spectrometer chip, each bolometer having an individual antenna which is sized differently from all others, thus being responsive to a generally unique frequency of radiation. Each antenna is coupled to a related transistor, which is easily formed using CMOS technology. The antennas are connected to opposite sides of a transistor gate, thus creating a termination resistor for the particular antenna. Multiple outputs from the various antennas are then coupled, thus providing responsiveness to electromagnetic radiation of a very broad spectrum.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2008Date of Patent: June 16, 2009Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Thomas E. Patent number: 7540804Abstract: A method of loosening crop material jammed between a cylinder and concave grate of an agricultural combine includes attaching a winch to a portion of the combine such that the winch location is fixed relative to the cylinder. An arm member is engaged with the cylinder, and a free end of the winch cable is attached to the arm member. The winch pulls the arm member toward the winch and rotates the cylinder in a reverse direction through a portion of a revolution, and then the winch is reversed to provide slack to allow disengaging the arm member from the cylinder, and reengaging the arm member at a different location to attain a suitable orientation. The winch is then again operated to rotate the cylinder in reverse through a further portion of a revolution, and steps are repeated as required to loosen the crop material.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 2006Date of Patent: June 2, 2009Inventor: Harvey Lesyk

Patent number: 7539602Abstract: An innovative method is taught for accelerating the simulation rate of differential equation systems having behavior piece-wise continuous in both value and time. Specifically, a system of differential equations representing the behavior of a physical system comprised of electronic, optical, or mechanical components may be simulated more rapidly using this method. The method utilizes incremental and iterative reconfiguration of digital logic wherein each configuration of the logic operates to yield a unique future value or range of values for each time-varying state variable within a system of equations representing a linear approximation of the original differential equation system for state variable values defined initially or at the onset of an iteration. Various configurations of the digital logic may be pre-computed or computed on demand, optionally caching such configurations for subsequent reuse.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 2006Date of Patent: May 26, 2009Assignee: FTL Systems, Inc.Inventor: John Christopher Willis
