Abstract: A monopulse system generates sum (.SIGMA.), elevation difference (.DELTA..sub.EL), azimuth difference (.DELTA..sub.AZ), and double difference (.DELTA..sub..DELTA.) signals, and generates a covariance matrix. The covariance matrix is decomposed to produce at least the principal eigenvector. The location or angular direction within the main beam of a single target is determined from the real component of the quotient of elements of the principal eigenvector, by the use of a look-up table. In another embodiment of the invention, the eigenvalues are generated from the covariance matrix, and the number of significant eigenvalues determines the number of targets within the main beam. If a single target is found, its location is found as described above. If two targets are found in the main beam, the locations of the two targets are determined by a closed-form solution of quadratic equations.
Abstract: An acoustic array handler (10) includes an elongated linear guide channel (14U, 14L) in which upper (18U) and lower (18L) trains of suction heads (18su) are longitudinally movable. Each suction head (18su) has a porous part shaped to fit the array hose, and together the two trains of suction heads hold the array along the length of the channel. A pump is coupled to the channel for applying suction to the channel and, through the suction heads, to the hose. When immersed in seawater, the pump creates a negative pressure within the channel and the suction heads, which is communicated to the hose, drawing the hose into intimate contact with the trains of suction heads. The trains of suction heads are powered so as to drive them through the channel, drawing the hose with them. In one embodiment of the invention, each of the trains of suction heads is an endless loop, which recirculates through the channel under the impetus of pulleys or sprockets.
Abstract: A hybrid electric vehicle includes a lead-acid traction battery made up of a plurality of series-connected modules. During operation of the vehicle, the traction battery is discharged for acceleration, and charged by an ancillary power source. The traction battery is desirably not fully charged at the beginning of a day's operation, so that overcharging cannot occur, so the battery spends long periods of time in a partially charged condition. When not fully charged for long periods of time, sulfation may reduce the charge storage capacity of the battery. A maintenance procedure takes place when the vehicle is not operating, in which one or more modules of the traction battery, but less than all the modules, are fully charged, then partially discharged. The full charging tends to reduce sulfation in the particular module being maintained, and the partial discharge restores its charge condition to that prior to the full charge. Each of the modules is eventually maintained by a programmed controller.

Abstract: A hydraulic pump (16) is driven by an induction motor (14) from a source of multiphase alternating current (10) of either fixed or variable frequency. The pressure is applied to a hydraulic load, which may vary, and change the pressure. A pressure sensor coupled to the pump produces pressure signals. The motor includes plural windings, typically three, associated with a number of poles. Each motor winding is driven by a different phase of controlled alternating current. A rectifier (46) coupled to the multiphase AC source generates direct current, which is filtered to minimize DC ripple voltage. A controllable multiphase inverter (54) is coupled to the rectifier and to the motor windings, for converting the direct voltage into multiphase alternating motor drive voltages of controllable amplitude and frequency.
Abstract: A transducer array according to the invention includes forty-two acoustic transducers for use in a fluid medium, with each of the transducers having maximum lateral dimensions of less than one acoustic wavelength in the medium, whereby the transducers themselves tend to radiate isotropically. The elements of the array are located at the vertices of an regular geodesic two-frequency icosahedron. The transducer array also includes a driver or a receiver, or both, and arrangements for coupling them to the array elements. A switching circuit can couple the array elements alternately to the driver or receiver, depending upon the operating mode. A conventional delay controller is coupled to the acoustic transducers, for controlling an acoustic beam formed by the array. In a particular embodiment of the invention, the array is operated at frequencies selected so that the inter-transducer spacing of any two mutually adjacent transducers does not exceed 2.lambda./3, and is not less than .lambda./3.
