  • Patent number: 4706349
Abstract: The adjustable-curvature roll of the present invention includes a hollow, cylindrical axle in which two rods are inserted. Each of these rods is securely fastened to an endplate at one end of the axle, and the opposite end of each rod is threaded within one of two oppositely rotating intermeshed gears. An adjusting hexagon or other similar adjusting device is connected to one of the meshed gears and the turning of the adjusting device in one direction causes an increase in the compression applied to one of the rods while at the same time exerting an increased tension on the other rod which is connected to the oppositely rotating gear. This combination of tension and compression causes the curvature of the roll to change. An indicator attached to the adjusting device provides a reading of the chosen degree of curvature. The axle may be surrounded by an outer sleeve which rotates, through the aid of ball bearings, around the axle.

  • Patent number: 4705187
Abstract: Disclosed is an enclosure or housing for a machine tool that includes a rear wall, two side walls, a top wall and a partial front wall. A door, is positioned above the partial front wall and covers that portion of the housing not covered by the remaining walls. The door is constructed in two sections with one section lying above the other in a closed position. The two sections are preferably joined by a hinge, and a door is opened by lifting the bottom section in an upward direction which thereby causes a top section to also lift until the rear faces of the top and bottom sections meet at an acute angle. A pair of rollers is connected to the lower section and the roller will roll on a track on the side walls while at the same time the upper section swings on the hinge which connects the upper section to the top wall. A door counterweight facilitates the lifting of the door and maintains the door in an open position.

  • Patent number: 4704015
Abstract: A system for attaching a replaceable, customizable nosepiece to an eyeglass frame is disclosed where the eyeglass and nosepiece fit together through a snappable attachment. The eyewires of the eyeglass frame are provided with a notch and adjacent projection. The nosepiece is roughly horseshoe shape, sized and shaped to fit between the eyewires under the connecting bridge of the frame. The tips of the horseshoe are shaped to snap into the notches on the eyewires, and be retained by the adjacent projections. In this manner, the nosepiece may be specifically selected for or customized to the particular size and shape of the user's nose.

  • Patent number: 4702015
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for providing a shower of fog onto a web or a machine component in contact with a web. The fog, which has a temperature lower than the temperature of the surface of the web or the machine component to be cooled, is applied to the surface and is caused to evaporate by the difference in the temperatures. A supply of dry air is supplied to transport the evaporated fog from the region adjacent the surface to be cooled. Fog may be generated through the use of an air-atomizing nozzle which propels water and compressed air through a small orifice under pressure to create an atomized mist or fog. In one embodiment, the fog may also be supplied in controlled specified quantities locally as required to provide for a controllable fog application rate across the full apparatus width.

  • Patent number: 4699479
Abstract: Disclosed is an eyeglass frame and method of assembling the same in which a temple includes a pair of parallel ears which extend from one end of the temple. Each ear includes a pin receiving hole, and on the facing surfaces of the ears, a ramped slot extends from the hole to one of the side surfaces. The depth of the slot increases as it approaches the side surface. The lens supporting structure includes a single extension member with a pin supporting hole. The pin is inserted into this hole, and the lens supporting structure and temple are brought together so that the two ends of the pin are aligned with the two slots on the temple. As the temple and the lens supporting structure are urged toward one another, the ears of the temple are forced apart by the ends of the pin until the pin reaches the pin receiving hole at which point the ends fall into the hole.

  • Patent number: 4698481
Abstract: A system to prevent, retard or reverse the decomposition of silicon carbide articles during high temperature plasma sintering. Preferably, the system comprises sintering a silicon carbide refractory or ceramic green body in a closed sintering environment, such as a closed tube, with strategic placement of the plasma torch or torches, exhaust outlet and tube. As sintering proceeds, a silicon vapor pressure builds up within the tube, retarding the decomposition of the silicon carbide body. The plasma torch, exhaust outlet, and tubes are positioned so that buoyant convective flow is maximized to increase the heat transfer and energy efficiency. In another embodiment, a "sacrificial" source of silicon carbide is placed into the sintering furnace. The silicon carbide in the sacrificial source starts to decompose before the silicon carbide refractory or ceramic article, creating a supersaturated atmosphere of silicon vapor species in the furnace.
